I’m a dentist, I mainly did it because of the money you get, but in the end I was actually enjoying my job. My favorite thing to do as a dentist is to remove wisdom teeth. There’s something about it that I enjoy. It’s satisfying to see how big the wisdom tooth got. I also like talking to my patients and comforting them.

I am 75 years old and just retired from dentistry. I enjoyed practicing dentistry and had my own practice for 40 years. Dentistry has been very good to me both financially and fulfilling. The Ups are greater than the Downs. In my last 10 years of practice, it was very fulfilling to extract up to 28 teeth in a single day and provide replacement dentures the same day. Patients were very thankful for that service.

I think dentistry is better because you get to work while retaining your human element and not being a robot! You also get to graduate sooner and work in peace. I chose it because i personally thought i would not be able to manage the constant regular adrenaline surges throughout the day everyday if i became an mbbs doctor. Also, i find maxillofacial surgery really interesting so i hope i get to become a maxillofacial surgeon one day, fingers crossed!

Dentist are not different professionals or less important. Dentist are not secondary to any specialty of medicine. A neurosurgeon has to take dentist appointment if he develops dental pain or need to see an oral surgeon ( specialist dentist) if he breaks his tmj or jaw or develops jaw tumor. So considering dentistry something less is totally wrong. There is wrong concept that physician can treat everything from head to toe but it is totally false. A physician can diagnose dental problems but cannot treat it and will refer to a dental surgeon. Similary if a physician diagnose any problem related to eye or skin he will refer the pt to an ophthalmologist or dermatologists for treatment respectively. And some treatment or surgery are performed in teams consisting of surgeon different specialty like for example oral cancer is treated by a team of oral surgeon ent surgeon and onco surgeon.

Anyways, people here had a habit: Even if their tooth aches, they'll rather drink 15¢ pain relievers than visit the dentist. However even though I'm 27, I want to take the first two years of dentistry school then enroll in podiatric med school abroad(because there is no podiatry school👣here but the first two years of dentistry and podiatry had same common health subjects)

@@cherrybansal110 hey! i passed my mcat in pakistan as well and super confused about whether i shud go for bds or not. here are my recommendations tho. you cud go or something similar instead. i, for example, have microbiology in mind for myself. however if youre really passionate about dentistry, then do alot of thinking, talk to other people about it and go for it. you might not end up going to the usa and become really successful in india or end up going to the middle east where the licensing exams are not too hard from what i’ve heard. and if you definitely wanna do dentistry AND go to the usa then things cud still work out. you might find a job for which you don’t necessarily need dds and our bachelors is acceptable to some extent. like research work or tecahing i think. i have a cousin who has done mbbs from pakistan and didnt clear the usmle. now he’s well settled in america and has some job in research work. alhto the key point here is that mbbs is acceptable and bds is not but bds is still a bachelors degree so this might work out for someone with a bds. and i know that cases like these are extremely rare but there is hope to some extent and if you’re very passionate about dentistry, you can find a way around things. as for myself i get very double minded about dentistry so it’s hard for me to apply this example to myself haha. again, i’d recommended talking to someone, maybe your own dentist, visiting a good career counselor and explaining this exact situation to them, talking to your parents, your classmates, someone doing bds etc. good luck with everything! and remember whatever you go for, contentment of the heart is most important :)
and altho im in a very confused state of mind, im still here if you wanna talk!

something else i wanna clear out about the example i gave of my cousin. his wife’s family was well settled in america so it makes a case like this easier. also i read your comment again and you said that you specifically wanna do postgraduation in usa. meaning you definitely wanna practice dentistry, so i dont think you’d wanna go for the research work and stuff

Possibly but there’s been so many layoffs lately, the job security just isn’t there. For some people that’s a bigger deal. Always hopping from job to job. At least with dentistry there’s always work and you don’t need to worry about not having a job or being unemployed. And if you specialize or own a practice you have a much more comfortable life.
