Wow. I'm pretty sure I've been to that mall a couple times before. Sad to see it go!
Also, the video on Regency Square's history would be pretty interesting, especially with all the renovations it's been undergoing recently

This is sad to see. With good management, the property could have been reinvigorated and achieved a new purpose; but it was just left to rot. I remember the grand opening in 1991. It was an aspirational time, and Virginia Center Commons was beautiful and modern. It never changed esthetically. Weeds started to grow in the parking lot and crime became a concern. The good stores left. I can describe a time when the mall was literally heaving with shoppers on a busy weekend... Obviously I'm getting a little older, and I'm concerned about the environmental impacts of destroying properties like this. Think of the volume of waste! Concrete. Steel. Tile. Glass. Plastics. Electronics... It's ironic that the area around the mall seems to be thriving. For now. Nothing lasts forever.

When Short Pump & Stony Point opened up, crime suddenly increased to the point that people that wanted to spend money stopped going to VCC because it wasn't a pleasant experience. With new movie theaters opening in the area, the VCC Regal turned into a second rate experience. Some locals say it was part of an organized plan to redirect shoppers (money) to the new malls and theaters.

    • @ThePodCastDojo

This summer the Sears in Alexandria, VA closed leaving Landmark Mall completely abandoned. The mall closed in January 2017 as the owners Howard Huges had planned to demolish it and develop an open town center. But talks have stalled and they've lost interest and will probably sell the mall. The movie Wonder Woman 1984 was filmed in the mall

The entire mall is not being demolished. Henrico county and The Rebkee Co. bought the mall. Henrico county is building a Sports and Events Center on the northeastern quadrant of the property where the Macy’s was. And the rebkee co has been tasked with revitalize the rest of the mall.
