For anyone watching in the future: a) make a backup with the 321 rule - 3 places I.e. one main copy and two backups, 2 mediums e.g. hard drive and ssd so they don’t fail at the same time, 1 in a different location like the cloud. b) if your hard drive makes that noise - unplug it immediately, it’s doing it’s self damage. Unless the platters are broken the data is still there so a recovery service could get it back, but if it’s making that noise it’s physically scratching the data off. c) a data recover service is definitely going to be worth it for something like this

Great tips, @jagoosw. Also, you never run chkdsk or similar for failing drive as it makes permanent changes to file structure and can make things worst. If you want to try recovering files yourself (not recommended for normal users) you first make image from failing drive and work with that. There are some Linux distros which you can boot from USB or CD/DVD which are really useful for data recovery, I've never had real success with Windows based tools.
Check your hard drive peridiocally with tools like CrystalDiskInfo, if your reallocated sector count is getting high, HD is failing and you should do backup immediately.

Having a clone of my internal drive saved me last year. My computer was toast, but I lost nothing and was able to restore like nothing happenbed. Invaluable. I've used Carbon Copy Cloner for this for years and finally needed it. I already had redundant backups, but this is a bit different.

Your production and on camera skills are top notch! Another enjoyable watch after coming from the F1 video. I thought I'd try a video with lower views and it didn't disappoint. Keep up the great work. No doubt the channel will continue growing as fast as it has!

My recommendation, better than 2 enclosed disks, get like your friend a proper NAS. Also the cloud copy is great to follow the mentioned 321.

I hope you still got the drive, cause your data can be recovered with almost certainty. There are recovery services available that can assist you with that and I suggest you contact them!
Don't simply rely on Cloud Service providers to keep your data secured! Recently there was a huge fire in a giant data center in Europe, which lead to loss of data for many many people and companies.
    constellix.com/news/massive-fire-destroyed-ovh-strasbourg-data-center
If you like your data to be secure, keep at least 3 copies of it at any time. Cloud services can be a great way to backup your data and protect it from theft or fires at your home. Hard drives store data on a magnetized disk which is a major risk in the first place, cause magnetism is fading.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_degradation
I recommend to store your most valuable data on special Blu-Ray discs called "MDISC" produced by Verbatim that are available for purchase easily online.
    www.verbatim-europe.co.uk/en/cat/mdisc-archival-media/
If you use these discs, you need to have a top shape Blu-Ray writer from the compatibility list, because the laser of the writer has to be powerful enough to inscribe the very hard data layer of the MDISC. To support that, I recommend to use the slowest writing speed possible. This will take more time to wait, but gives the laser more time to again properly inscribe the data into the surface. It literally makes a visual difference and we're going for safety and not speed!
If you properly store the MDISC your data will most likely survive even for your grand grand kids to see it, which brings up other issues, but that's of no concern right now. Hopefully there will be Blu-Ray players available in 100 years.

Note that the OVH fire caused data loss only for people running dedicated servers (mainly developers and sysadmins) - this isn't what people use for backups. I doubt there's any popular cloud backup/storage service out there (including OVH's own) without data replicated at least over multiple buildings, if not multiple cities/countries.

Tip: Set your laptop on the ground against the wall the place a box fan above it leaning against the wall at a 45 degree angle. Then set the fan on high. That way it cools the computer.

I bet i late with it, but if you can manage to get, fill with HDDs, and "electric-billicly" support a NAS like your buddy has (or smaller for your needs) you can sync the local data with your buddy's NAS, if it is the same modell surely in both direction, if it a smaller one on your side, i would bet it is configurable as the big's chunk. First sync in location is recommended, the rest depends on your internet speed.
Also there are solutions against fire too: the NAS (or external drive) is enclosed in a hard foam (and within that waterproofed), what has water chemicly locked in, and in case of high temeratures, the water evaporates, basicly locking the drive at around boiling-water temperatures, and not way higher plastic melting open flame temperatures...
In data safety only the money is the limit!

man i feel you. i once was working on my pc components, removed the hard disk and put it on the (musical) keyboard. it was so heavy the keys got pushed down (what i didnt notice) and it slowly moved to the edge where it dropped down on the floor. thanks to mechanical HDDs it was broken and all my stuff gone. the silicium disc is now hanging on my room light as a kind reminder...

Ps if those apps find anything, it will be one amor chaos of files. It will be ordened by file types. So you manually have reorder everything, that's is madness! I my case that's pretty much undoable. It's almost impossible to collect everything back into the original folders as they were.

Recovery tools all have their strengths and weaknesses and you may want to try some alternatives before saying goodbye to your files. For example photorec which is designed to recover photos and videos.

I had a big drive failure when I was actually making a backup of my main drive onto a new drive. The app crashed and rendered my drive useless at the time so I rebooted. Doing so caused a drive failure and I most about 200gb of data. The shitty thing was, that had run a full backup properly before, yet because the drive was new it was formatted wrong. It used wrong packages and thus every small because a 512kb and thus filles the drive way up. So I formatted the new one and started the backups that's when the app failed and I lost 200gb of data.
Ps that chkdsk adds a hidden folder and es all files CHK. There apps which runs of those files and tries to add correct extensions, yet it doesn't now lots of design apps. I've gotten over it. Still got that new drive laying on my desk. It had a full backup and perhaps I can retrieve lost files. I'm waiting for a friend which jas some special software which can retrieve data from formatted disks.
I also tried some apps, but some took days to scan that 4tb drive and again it doesn't recognize lots of file extensions i need.
