    STORYLINE:
A repatriation ceremony for the remains of two North Korean soldiers carried across the North-South Korea border by floods earlier this year, took place in the border village of Panmunjom on Friday morning
The United Nations command handed over two North Korean soldiers' bodies and their belongings in a ceremony at the Joint Security Area border crossing.
North Korean military officials crossed the military demarcation line, checked the deceased soldiers' uniforms and belongings, and then returned to their side of the border to formally receive the bodies.
The US-led UN command said Tuesday that the corpses were found separately last month.
The command determined they were North Korean soldiers based on their clothing and personal articles.
The bodies of North Koreans occasionally wash down the river into South Korea following flooding north of the border.
The UN command oversees an armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.
About 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea.

Odd as it sounds the 4km wide DMZ is 1 of the best " nature reserves" in the whole peninsula. With no human presence in most of the zone the wildlife has flourished. There have even been pics taken through the fence of Siberian Tigers and Amur Leopards as well as many other rare species. There was an application to make the zone a UNESCO world bio diversity heritage site but NK claimed that doing so would violate the armistice agreement so it wasnt approved.

John L I think that the threat of having three generations of your family sent to Yodok would be a strong enough deterrent to prevent that from happening in the first place. Besides, only their most loyal and best fed soldiers are allowed anywhere near the JSA. Their entire families would go from the top of the songbun to Yodok, including even their small children. They don't want that.

José Paulo Barbosa da Silva I asked the same question nine months ago and I got a bunch of responses. They told me that if one of those soldiers defected then their entire family would be sent to a labor camp, quite possibly including people that didn't even know they were related to the defector. Also, I would assume the ones who are allowed to cross over into the south are high-ranking officials with good lives in the north so they have a lot to lose money-wise as well

ChinaLake100 but what if you have no family (for no matter what reason)? Why just not run away? Thae Yong-ho managed to gather his family and they all ran away...

@@josepaulobarbosadasilva1544 But he was very lucky. Most definitely the soldiers will shoot you down if you continue to resist. Some of their torture methods are also very brutal and inconsiderate. I mean, you may have a chance of escaping to China and getting away with it. South Korea though? Barely and i mean that. That's why NK people would first defect to China and then go to SK or wherever.

Rowdy Jr. all the soldiers have to do is step over the line and success. However the regime only puts the most loyal soldiers at the border so their less likely to defects. South Korea also encourage North Koreans to defect that's why they play South Korean propaganda across the border to encourage them
