I think you said you were going to start your color wet on wet, but your paper was dry. Either way love your work, and love that you try other ppls techniques ❤ i can't wait to try this loose and bold style
Yes, I misspoke about the wet on wet.
I am a former drafter, so I clue onto details that messes the whole thing up. I wish I could figure out how to post a picture here, as my version (made while your video was rolling, so 5 minutes including color) is against the grain of everything I have been trained as....but hell, its messy, but I can see my way to a looser way of interpretation that is way more fun. i get stressed out on all the details having to be right (and they never ever will be)....so Ian's technique is somewhat liberating.
I know what you mean about the drafter's mentality of being detail focus. I have had that issue too. What I find that is helpful is to draw only the outline of the overall main scene. Then, fill in the details layer by layer. To a point, you will want to stop before over-working the composition. I would love to see your 5 minute sketch. Thank you for your comments. I was taught to be tight with my drawings too. It is a journey of finding our new comfort level of being loose.

Watercolor paper does not “ruin “ your pens if they are fountain pens. Felt tip pens are too fragile..

It is good that you are able to set your ego aside and are willing to learn. However, also try to stay truth to yourself. It seems to me that you are throwing away the baby with the bathwater if you try to follow Ian’s way. He has his own talents and qualities, but you have yours. Ian could never draw from your vision and experience as an architect, for example.
Try to develop from within instead of from the outside. Everyone is unique. Follow your own path and try to find your own unique expression.
