all of my non-parody characters are a part of me, and LME is undoubtedly the largest piece, so this was a somewhat personal and very heartfelt/carthatic video for me to make. sometimes music affects me so powerfully that i drop what i'm currently working on to create something i don't even know the meaning of myself, to convey what i'm feeling. this video was one of those. it can be interpreted in many valid ways-it's merely a reflection of who you are-so try not to get caught up on that. all that matters is you're able to glean some understanding from it, and hopefully that which is meaningful to you in some way :) that's the beauty of art
Some really cool imagery used to help create a solid (largely) silent narrative! I personally interpret it as a discussion on how we can sometimes not feel like ourselves or the internal conflict of what it means to change as a person. The laser form of the mouse is a possible idea of what could be, not necessarily a dark reflection but an unideal path which distances them from others and makes them less "human".
The propositioning of them around other laser cogs I feel pushes this point further, and also links this idea of the loss of humanity with the nature of unideal work or capital as a whole (if you want to push that reading further). The laser cog is not even physical anymore, it's beyond a husk for the machine the spirit of a worker dedicated to keep having to continue, and what our protagonist could become (maybe linking the idea of the laser with death as well).
Though this idea of not fitting in, and debating change I feel is pushed more with scenes like the chess piece on the checkers board, or the images of other toons (possible futures which could have turned out better) and images of windows and doors (looking for an escape of the current situation). I am a bit unsure of the symbolism of the ladder, but I think it could either represent the afterlife (recontextualizing the short film into a darker direction), or more the idea of the ladder of dedication to a goal, be that a corporate structure, sheer dedication to only the self, or other things, it could be an expression of an endless unattainable goal, always a few more rungs until making it to the top.
This is finally shown with the use of colour throughout which I feel is a clear showing of joy or fulfillment and the monochrome being pessimism, and nihilism. And how a clear statement on how only meaningful connection with others, and finding peace and respect within the self can truly allow a person to move forward. Abandoning the ladder and the reflection of what could be, to find joy in the now and love from those around you.
