Like lots of religious people, he wants god to do not just as he asks but how he wants. He doesn't just want Esmeralda out of his life, that's a euphemism, he wants her dead to quell his lust for her. He's a weak man incaple of recognising his own faults, his pride leading to lack of humility and self-awareness being his undoing. He's much further from god than he thinks he is, possibly even more than the "common vulgar weak crowd".

It took some time to notice, but God actually did respond to Frollo's prayers to save him from Hell. When the guard tells him that Esmeralda has escaped, Frollo is essentially given one last chance for salvation. All Frollo had to do to save his soul was to let Esmeralda go and not give into lust and he will be granted entry into Heaven (symbolized by the light that illuminates the corridor behind the door). Unfortunately, Frollo rejects his entry into Heaven by giving into his lust and pride (symbolized by him facing the fireplace) and thus his fate is foreshadowed by having him pass out in the shape of an upside down crucifix.
This movie goes to show that evil people can be saved and good people can sin. Frollo and Quasimodo's feelings for Esmeralda cause them both to sin. Frollo lusts for Esmeralda and Quasimodo is envious of Phoebus for "stealing" Esmeralda from him. The difference between Frollo and Quasi is that Frollo gives into his ego and lust while Quasi lets go of his ego and envy by humbly accepting that he can't have Esmeralda and is satisfied that she loves him like a brother.

Part of that is the animation. It’s actual drawings on top of drawings.
So when the camera moves, it’s just showing you more of an image that actually exists.
These CGI are not real. And when they move too fast, the camera doesn’t know what to focus on, because there’s nothing actually there.

It’s the classic ‘if I can’t have her then nobody else will!” Frollo is too obsessed and would rather Esmeralda be dead then be free to leave him and maybe be with another man.
That’s why right after he’s told she escaped he lets go of any attempt at fighting his lust and basically embraces his own damnation by declaring she’s either going to sleep with him or he’ll kill her. Looking at how soft their animated films are now it’s kinda amazing to look back and see how very bold and unafraid they once were to tackle such mature topics like obsession.

You know whats really interesting? In disney movies (usually from disny's Renaissance era) the protagonist/hero usually has an "I want" (ex: Ariel, Belle, Hercules) song while the antagonist/villain has an "I am" song (ex: Gaston and Ursula). But in this movie there are three "I want" songs: Out there, GHTO, but most importantly Hellfire. All three show us the desires and motivations of the characters (for example Esmeralda's selflessness) and through hellfire we see what's inside the villain's head when he gets an "I want song" (with a tad bit of an "I am" song at the beginning). He believes himself to be a righteous man, even thinking he is somewhat of a hero (or the protagonist) wiping out all the "sinners", and then mentally tortures himself when he becomes attracted to one of the "sinners". He is scared of these feelings, blaming anyone but himself, and begging to be free of Esmeralda. Then he gets his wish, Esmeralda has escaped and he can let her go. But he doesn't, he can't. This obsession has spread so much that he sprials further into madness and dives into the mindset of " if I can't have you no one can". To the point where he doesn't care how he is seen (the dude burns down alot of paris, and later breaks the sanctity by breaking in to kill Quasi and Esmeralda) as long as he gets Esmeralda one way or another. And that's been foreshadowed to be his downfall ever since this song, and I think he knows this but wants to continue pretending. Why else at 1:05 would he see red cloaked figures chanying in latin a prayer thats basically means "my fault"? Or at 1:50 have his prayer be answered? He knows he's been given another chance, but he still can't let go. So he does what he does best and ignores any guilt that may hold him back.
Whats scary is that there have been real people who act like this, driven by obsession and greed. Who lets their emotions control them and sprial into madness. All the whole trying to acoid the consequences of their actions. The real reason frollo is scary is because he is human and we see that in Hellfire when frollo is at his most vulnerable.
Like it or not frollo probably had the most depth of any disney villain

The older Disney films and their legacies continue to grow in terms of the respect and appreciation they garner from me not just because of how good they were, but because they had such convictions about them and dared to showcase mature and challenging ideas in a way that we could never see today. Today people would be too offended by what villains like Frollo represent, and we'd never even see powerful scenes like this one.

    • @omarcogle1965

    • @ken__2526
      @ken__2526 Před rokem +39

"Today people would be too offended by what villains like Frollo represent"
The fact that Frollo (and this scene) is more appreciated now argues the opposite, actually. Modern audiences *want* villains like this. They want villains that reflect what's wrong in people, what's wrong in society, villains that reflect all the murky moral stuff that mess us up, and for those villains to be presented in challenging, even loud ways. That's why audiences (especially the internet) love Thanos, Griffith, Regina George, Cersei Lannister, DIO, Father Enrico Pucci, Amy Dunne, Ledger's Joker, Terence Fletcher, Mads Mikkelsen's Hannibal, Kira Yoshikage, Walter White, Johan Liebert, Ed Kemper (from Mindhunter) and so much more. The present is a weird, confusing, challenging time, and having a great villain clears things up for people. A great villain gives people some perspective, and that is very comforting.
I'm thinking that the real reason for the lack of great Disney villains isn't because Disney is afraid to offend anyone, but because Disney has been trying to Pixar-ise its films. Back in the 2000s, Disney was having troubles, but Pixar was doing good. So, in the late 2000s, Disney tried to make their movies the Pixar way: more focus on interpersonal and internal conflicts than physical threats (like, for example, Lazlo was a villain in Toy Story 3, but, the main cast's parting with Andy, the themes of letting go, moving on, growing up, and growing out of things you love, all have more impact than anything Lazlo did as a villain -- and you have to remember, Lazlo put them in an *incenerator*). This mimicry of Pixar's storytelling led to Disney making "Tangled" and "Frozen", which were hits. And if you have a hit, then just repeat your technique in the next one, and the next one, and the next... You also have to consider the anti-hero trend in movies as well as the "therapy talk" movies (you know, those movies that are all about trauma, family trauma, existential crisis, depression, anxiety, etc) that are now popular. I think that helped Disney decide to stick to their new formula. And as we can see, the movies are still making bank. As long as this formula doesnt fail Disney Animation, they will not let it go.

Guard 1: Fine, coin toss it is.... Heads you go , Tails I go.

*Guard 2 groans and knocks door aggressively then goes in*
*comes out after talking to Frollo*
Guard 1: So..... how did he take it?

Frollo is one of my favorite Disney villains, mostly because of this song.
It really tells of his religious path to hell, as his obsession for esmeralda puts him in a tough decision of either continuing to find her or just stop, hence why the guard came in the room, telling him that there is a chance to change and stop his obsession. This makes him easily one of the best villains of Disney.

Goddamn. Seeing clips of this movie as a grown ass man hit way harder than when I was a child. I remember that I didn't like the movie as a kid. Now I can kinda get why. The tone of this one is for sure the darkest Disney ever got hands down, and they absolutey went places before and after this. I remember being scared, being let down by how anytime there's any hope it's taken away. Definitely opressive themes well represented through its direction. Almost too much for me to process. But I think I should give it another try someday now. I think I'd be able to apreciate it with fresh eyes.

I hope you do! This is Disney’s magnum opus as far as I’m concerned. I was working on some things late last night and actually put it on. It does have its small moment of comic relief, but the majority of the film is quite serious and dark, and the score is impeccable. Excellent showcase of the nature of sin and the righteousness and mercy of God.

This is easily the most intense villain song in Disney history. Most other Disney villain songs have a gleeful tone, with the villain prancing around and cackling with either eager anticipation or triumphant joy. This song, on the other hand, is pure tortured, vengeful hatred and spite.
The closest Disney villain song to it might be “Savages” from Pocahontas, which I also like, but how that film butchered the history of Jamestown and the Powhatan people weighs it down with some undesirable baggage.

Interesting trivia: This Villain Song was *SO GOOD* it basically killed the Villain Song trope for Disney movies for several years. After this movie came out, Disney never made another villain song for well over 13 years. This is how you know you're listening to a Magnum Opus. When they don't even bother to try to out-do it for the next one because they know it's futile.

Man, Disney now may as well be a whole different company now than when they made movies like this. There’s so much detail in the animation & art- and while 3D can have impressive detail too, it just doesn’t compare to type of movement & style that 2D has. The emotions shown so intensely, the lighting and way everything around him changes. I often feel that when 3D animation suddenly has giant characters grow in the scene, it doesn’t feel quite right. But it works so well in 2D like this.
I’m not necessarily saying one is better than the other between 2D vs 3D; just that it’s a shame 2D isn’t ever used by Disney anymore & barely used by other mainstream studios. I’m definitely grateful that indie animation is becoming more prevalent due to us artists not only wanting 2D animation, but also because we want more meaningful stories that have a lot of depth, true villains, dark scenarios, etc.

Remind me, why wasn't he an antagonist in Once Upon A Time? He would've been an awesome villain.

@@omarcogle1965 Disney probably doesn’t really mention Frollo much due to him nog being broken or having parent issues. He’s just evil. His lust for Esmeralda caused him to lose it, he’s a husk if a man, not broken. Just wanting what he wants. And as he said, burning down Paris just to find her.

I would love to hear Tony Jay’s vocals isolated, especially for the last part of the song where the music kind of overpowers him.
