Lost Tools of Writing Level 1 for Grade 8, I think will be a great curriculum after those 2 from IEW. Then HS Intensive by IEW before EIW and EIL for her Grades 9 and 10. They have a scoring service. I do love TGTB for the well rounded lessons…adding in the geography and lessons there, as well as the art appreciation….not going to get that from IEW or LTW. So it’s such a big question!

      You can use whatever books you want. The examples in the book are from the Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe. But when we did this through classical conversations, we used all kinds of books. The curriculum teaches techniques that can be applied with any book, if that makes sense.

    You probably won't be able to answer this. I have a daughter entering 9th grade. She hasn't written much throughout her education so she is not very good at writing. I really want her to do Lost Tools of Writing because of the benefits of teaching her how to think. But I think she needs IEW first. She has four years of school left. I'm wondering if I should start her on IEW B1 and do B1, B2, C1, and C2 and skip Lost Tools. I'm thinking since she hasn't had much writing experience, starting her with B1 is best. But then I lose out on Lost Tools. I have also considered starting her on C1 for freshman year, C2 for sophomore year, then doing Lost Tools for Jr and Sr year. I guess the issue is whether or not to Start her on B1 or C1. I hear the difference between level B and C is mostly reading level. Her reading is on grade level. I know its hard for you to answer a question like this but can you give me some insight on where to start her on IEW. Are two years enough of IEW? Should I do IEW for all four years? Is only one year of Lost Tools enough? I'm confused and feel bad I didn't make her write more in the past. Thanks for any insight you can give.
    As an afterthought, what does the 2nd year courses in Structure and Style do? I could do B1 (freshman) then do C1 (sophomore) and C2 (junior), leaving Lost Tools for her senior year.

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Před rokem

      These are tough questions. I think if you contacted IEW, they would probably tell you it’s ok to start at the lower level of B1 if she’s never done it before. The videos will be geared to younger ages, but that’s ok. The text that she’ll write papers from will be less and therefore less overwhelming for her to learn the process. So that’s not a bad idea. As far as what B1 vs B2 is, I’m actually not really sure. My son did C1 this last year and it included all 9 units it normally does. I didn’t get the C2 this year bc he still has 3 units to finish for C1 and then I’m adding other language arts in. But IEW may be able to tell you do their website shows samples that may indicate I’d the year 2 is just a repeat of the same concepts to reinforce the learning.
      My OPINION (keep that in mind-just an opinion) is that after 2 years of IEW, she might be able to move into Lost Tools. IEW is such a good teacher!! And you’ll be surprised at how much she learns from just 1 year!
      Here’s the link to the IEW site if you want to contact them or see the samples of the year 2. I hope that helps!

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan

      You’re plan sounds great! I will say this, however….the new structure and style for students, is where Andrew is teaching the students himself. (I didn’t discuss it in THIS comparison but I did an IEW comparison recently /‘d discussed it there).) so once you’ve gone through the All things fun book, you may decide you’ve got the gist and don’t need the videos. (Or you may decide you want more reinforcement for things you missed -up to you). Repetition is going to be great no matter what for drilling the techniques so that they become 2nd nature.
      Lost Tools you could start anytime after 7th grade. It’s definitely advanced enough to be a high school course. And taking your time with it, over two years, yes!!! I don’t have any personal experience with the level 2 course. But obviously….it’s level 2!, do it after level 1. 😜😉 you’ve got great ideas!

    Thanks for clarifying that LTW LEVEL 1 is what CC uses for all the Challenge levels. I hope I'm getting that right. We went through one year of LTW level 1 with mixed feelings about it. I assumed, before checking, that I needed to buy the level 2 for 8th grade.
    Can you tell me why there are higher LTW levels if the first level is so "meaty"?
    My son did 3 years of Essentials using IEW. He's a very rule-oriented person and as soon as we stopped IEW, he thought he could throw out IEW concepts. 😭 He did the bare minimum LTW concepts and it felt like his skills had regressed. The sentences turned out sounding very strange as if he wasn't trying to make them flow and connect. I keep wondering if a second year or several will look better. I feel like I'm going to go insane reading his essays if something doesn't change. Did you have a similar experience the first year?

      CC uses LTW 2 by /CH 1 or 2....but I haven't looked at LTW level 2 to know what's different, so I can't answer that question for you.
      As for throwing out the IEW concepts....yes, my son kind of quit thinking about dressing up his paragraphs and i had to remind him that he should still be using those concepts. You could get an IEW checklist for your child to use along with the LTW papers. You can also add descriptions and better sentence openers!!! :)

    Do you think this would be too advanced for an upper elementary student who is an advanced writer? My daughter could finished IEW SSS1A over the summer. There were many good techniques learned, no doubt, but, when she was writing based on a literature, I felt she needed something more. I am very curious to learn this curriculum.

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Před 2 lety +2

      It’s intended for age 12+. So I would say if your daughter grasps literature and can begin to question ideas in literature, then yes. The main thing that is exercised in every single paper is the ability to brainstorm both sides of an issue. So some critical thinking skills….the kind of thinking they are trying to train is difficult for younger ages because they aren’t necessarily thinking about “deeper meanings.” So you’d have to gauge your child’s ability on that. It’s definitely more than grammar. Infact, grammar isn’t really taught in this curriculum. It’s higher thinking than that.
      So if your daughter is at least 12, I’d say yes! If 11, you’ll have to decide how deeply she can think through issues and conflicts. I hope that helps. 😉

      I assume the rhetoric one is IEW? I don’t have any experience with that. But I did recently ask IEW about high school writing programs and they told me that the writing with rhetoric is for more experienced writers (like after they’ve completed the structure and style program).

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Před 2 lety

      it depends on what your goals are. IEW will focus on the process of writing a paper, focusing on grammar and how to change up sentences openers, etc. Lost Tools is more about persuasive writing and creating an argument...how to brainstorm your points and then logically communicate them. IEW's scope is broader in terms of different kinds of papers (research papers, literary analysis, creative writing) Lost Tools scope (at least for level 1) is all about persuasive and thinking through multiple sides. So it dives deep into that. If your student is already a great writer, then I'd probably suggest Lost Tools. But to be fair....I haven't done the high school level IEW course. My son is doing it this year, though.
      I'm not sure if that helped. I feel like you're asking me to choose a favorite child! ;). They are both excellent programs.

Having gone through both, do you feel a 2nd year of IEW would make sense before jumping into TLT? With my son entering high school next year, I feel the time is running out quickly. We haven’t homeschooled as long either and I almost feel like we’re trying make up for lost time. So do you feel from your experience that one year of IEW’s techniques would be enough before switching? I appreciate your thoughts!

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Před 2 lety +1

      They are different programs. IEW is going to focus more on the grammar and style of a paper (like adding clincher sentences at the end of every paragraph). Lost Tools is more about the CONTENT of an persuasive paper and how to present an argument. So moving on from IEW depends on if your child has the grammar down and the process of writing. That’s not the day they can’t move on. But Lost Tools isn’t focusing at all on grammar and different sentence openers, etc if that makes sense. You could just keep the IEW checklists for all LTW papers to keep emphasizing the switching up of the style.

    I don’t understand…. Is level 1 all based off the Narnia book? All the essays and lessons etc are based off the Narnia book?
    Also, what grade level is level 1?
    And what is best for a 10th grader that needs catching up with writing… LTW or IEW?

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  Před 5 měsíci

      The examples in the book are “the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” They also have sample essays from “the gift of the Magi” but they are strictly used as examples. You can use what they teach and apply it to any book that has a conflict or opinions where they could be an opposing side.
      Which program being best….ugh…it really depends. It’s hard to say bc they are so different. I was literally just asking my sis in law this week a similar question bc I, too, have a struggling writer who is finishing up IEW this year. But I’m not sure what I want to do. And she brought up Lost Tools again and said that her son also struggled in writing until he did Lost Tools of Writing. So she was suggesting that I do it again with mine.
      I think IEW focuses more grammar and using adverbs and adjectives, etc. and it does also help give you a structure for writing.
      Lost Tools focuses more on brainstorming ideas and giving you different ways to structure an argument. It doesn’t deal with as much grammar or adjectives, etc and more with ideas.
      So I’d say it depends on the weaknesses you want to focus on. But they’re both so good! 😊

    So if my kids know each type of paper, lost tools of writing would be a good place to start?

      It depends on what you’re looking for. Lost tools is more about analysis of writing and learning how to persuade on a point of view.

    Did you view the Lost Tools’ videos? Is it worth paying for them? One must buy these book new to get access to videos I think.

      I did view the videos but I didn’t pay extra for them. I had a code for viewing them. I’m not sure if that was a Classical Conversation thing or not.
      That’s hard to say if they’re worth it. It’s nice to have a video explain it. But I also think it’s the same info in the teachers manual. But if you don’t understand it….the video walks you through it. The videos are short. They are maybe 10-15 min long so they aren’t extensive explanations of each element.

      Oh no!! Well….I did say it’s a lot. It’s a lot to absorb bc honestly, it’s not how we were taught. This curriculum is very classical. And the classical approach to education is to train the brain how to think. And that’s not how education is really done today. It’s hard to think!
      But I totally get it!

      @@paularodillo no, no, no….I do NOT do all three of these. We did IEW in 4th - 6th grade. We did LTW in 7th-8th grade. And now my son is doing TGTB. But we still use the tools and checklists and ideas we learned from the other programs to write papers. That’s what I meant. It’s a way of learning that should affect how you write anything going forward.
      I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear on that. I probably mentioned all of that in the first video.

      For Lost Tools? Did you buy the complete set that comes with the videos? For $147? 🤔 if you did, and you can’t find any info for accessing them, I’d contact the company and ask.
