Some Well-Meaning Tips: Custom molds, especially complex ones like this bunny, work best if you have a sealed box to set the object in.
◘First, pour a base layer of silicon into the box, set the object in that, then pour in enough silicon to fully cover the object.
      ◘Let it set to cure.
      ◘Un-box the entire thing.
◘Cut a 1cm-2cm hole in the center of either the top or bottom, going down to the molded object.
◘Apply an X-cut to the same side making sure to intersect with the hole.
      ◘Invert the mold.
In this case, you'd cut the bottom because that's where the feet are. When it's time to use the mold, simple put it back in the box, hole side up, and pour away. The box will hold the cut sides fast to prevent leakage, while the cuts make it easier to un-mold.
If you could find the right model, you could make a cow's head out of butter. The tricky part would be getting the butter just soft enough, without melting it and ruining the texture. Salted butter would be best, since unsalted butter tends to go rancid with exposure to light and/or household temperatures.

I've been making molds for years (not for food but it's the same principal) and for your first attempt that was pretty impressive. a few little tips for the future, in this video you made a very clever little box (love it!) to suspend the mold but you will find it alot easier if you use a container (maybe a meduim sized bucket for this project) and then pour sand around the mold in the container, this way will reduce mess and certainly make it more secure to make a cast. tip 2, use cheese cloth, if you do two layers of latex add a layer of cheese cloth before it dries, if you do multiple coats of silicone then lay cheese cloth down every three layer of silicone. tip 3, if your having trouble taking the mold of even with release spray, don't be afraid to cut a slit of two in the base to help ease it out, when it comes to casting just tape up the slits with some gaffer tape. lastly if your ever unsure about how much material to use to cast the object, fill the mold with rice first, weigh the rice and that will usually give you a good idea of how much materrial to use, example: if the rice weighs 1KG then use 1KG of material. If you want to know anything else feel free to ask away.

Tips for silicone molding for future products because I did this on my first project.
Use nonporus items or plastic never foam. When it comes to making molds but a bug tub of it. It will be cheaper and have more then what's really needed. Plus it's better to make a cub version. That's reusable.
Silicone does get every detail that's on a object. If you ever want pointers go to TKOR. They use it a lot to.

Barry, use Plaster. Paint the silicone on the model, put it into a box, fill around the silicone covered model with plaster and let it set, cut the plaster shell in half to release the silicone. Polystyrene give it at least 4 coats of white PVA paint first, let dry well and then use the mould release on it, or use spray on cooking oil instead. 3 coats of that lightly, and leave to flash off. Then use the silicone, and when cured take the polystyrene and add some paint thinners to it, it will dissolve away into goo ( which is what PVC weld is made from BTW) that you can pour out easily, Let mould evaporate, turn inside out and clean with soap and water.
tip as well is to get a batch of the regular silicone moulding compound, and put a third coat on the outside after the foos grade stuff, to make the mould stiffer cheaply. If you have holes still use a tube of bathroom silicone, it will work to both make the joins thicker and fill the holes and tears. Use the aquarium one, it contains no harmful fungicides.

There are all these metal chocolate molds on Ebay for $100 with the most expensive being an 18" one for $1000.

YAS! I said ages ago that you should make custom silicon molds and it's finally come to pass! Huzzah!
    Cheers from Minnesota, USA!

When making a mould of something set it in a box that can cover the item and fill it with the silicone. Watch some tutorials on CZcams of people using it for crafting. You’ll find it helpful. Great first attempt!

I'm from America but live in Australia with my fiance(him and his family are born and raised here) they gave us those bunnies for Easter and they're so cute. :D I love learning about cultures and I think it's so neat how a lot of foods that are from Britian are also here. Makes sense because of history but I find that kind of stuff super cool and I nerd out a bit over it. :p

3:49 Barry is the new Dexter. Also if you use polystyrene and its hard to get out, you can pour in acetone to melt the polysterene.

  • @culthosmythos
    @culthosmythos Před 4 lety

If you ever did try something like this again, I believe a significantly easier way to remove the polystyrene original would be to literally dissolve it away from the inside of the silicone using acetone- nail polish remover. MUST check to see if it reacts badly to the silicone first though, and if not would still have to remember to pour out liquid solvent (which WILL stink and be HIGHLY flamable), then rinse silicone out with water and allow to dry. Another trick would be to suspend your original (rabbit in this case) in a bucket etc just big enough to hold it- using bamboo skewers or similar- and pour the silicone into the bucket around the original, can then use that same bucket to hold the mould when pouring the chocolate and turn out onto surface once solid.
