From what I can see from their making-of, the electronic parts are of course in a computer but they do have their own drummer and they get these "odd" sounding instruments into the studio and they are played by a person but it's then assembled afterwards. So the answer is basically "it depends" :D
Great stuff Jim! It's well worth watching the "making of" docu short about this album to see the process and the musicians. Also, perhaps, the 3 or 4 "making of" shorts for the previous album, "Savage Sinusoid". Yes, it does come almost entirely out of Gautier Serre's head and a few albums back it was almost all computer manipulation of samples. The latest two releases, however, are heavy with live performances (including that insane bass playing and slightly sadly dynamically limited drumming). It is manipulated and produced to the max, but I think you'll be surprised how much of it was actually played.
In most songs the drums are ultracompresed to simulate them being electronic, something Gautier loves... but in some song like Desert Downgrade, you can hear in a couple places some dynamics which contrast with the almost robotic rest
Jim, the leader of this band, Gauthier Serre, is an absolute electronic genius. Lost in Introspection, the song you're gonna have a chance to listen to, was conceived, when Gauthier was about 20 yo. The class of the song, speaks volume, since the guy was so young to have an idea like this.
Maybe not new but an interesting fusion of drum 'n' bass, dubstep and metal and that's often how the best recipes are made - chuck those tasty things in a pot, stir with computerised stick and see what comes out. I have not heard this before but am glad that I have done so now.
It's a bit odd when almost everyone who've listened to Igorrr have said it's exhausting to listen to. I listen Igorrr to relax :D It feels like organized chaos and it's a miracle that it doesn't sound like noise (at least for me). I totally get though if people don't like them. Personally I prefer the previous records Savage Sinusoid, Hallelujah and Nostril but this one is great in its own right. The only other artist that gives me the same kind of vibe is Cristobal Tapia de Veer. Even though he's a movie/tv composer I would like for people to check out his work on Utopia season 2 and 1 scores. Anyway, thx for checking Igorrr out!
Hey Joona, thank you for commenting. I actually really like this music, but for me it is VERY busy and frenetic, frantic almost. My brain is old and slow! This music is complex and fast. I need time to catch my breath between listens!!!!
I thought this would be a once in while listen. Nope! I bought it, and cannot get enough of this. It is hard to explain, but it does some things that very very little music has done for me. Genius like this should be celebrated and appreciated.
I couldn’t help it I had to watch 🤭 Most of the drums are real drums also the bass and guitars, piano, violin, harpsichord etc are all done by accomplished musicians. I think Igorrr writes his music based on a concept. He has a picture in his mind and then puts that down. He can interpret colours and pictures into sound. Every single sound and sample on this album was created by Igorrr. He does not use any artificial reverbs or anything. Once you have listened to the album go check out the making of spirituality and distortion on Igorrr’s CZcams channel. It is so interesting. He is a modern day Bach or as he would prefer to be called a modern day Domenico Scarlatti. The next song Parpaing has the singer from cannibal corpse, so it’s quite heavy, you have been warned. :)
This is an insane listen. I think I like it, but I can't listen to a lot at one time. I think this is quite brilliant, but only in small doses. I'll need to have a few days before I listen to more. It's not that I don't like it, far from it! But it is very intense and makes me, what's the opposite of relaxed? Hmmm, nervous and anxious I guess!
@@JimNewstead Yeah it is quite disturbing music, I find it doesn't really finish in a traditional sense and kind of leaves a question at the end of each song. Like the end of Nervous Waltz with the violin it just stops. Do it in your own time Jim, the last half of the album is amazing. Something to look forward to. :)
Just saw this live last Monday in Tavastia, Helsinki. They actually do play most of their stuff live and all majority of their sound is made actually via traditional means, as unbelievable as it sounds. Obviously there are a lot of things that are edited and whatnot but it actually boils down to a lot of things recorded and then mixed up.
Definitely one of their best albums! thanks for your great reaction I had a blast watching You can only be certain about one thing when it comes to Igorrr: that every one of their pieces will be something special and unique/unexpected be it your classical instruments (often played in an odd way by fantastic musicians), ethnical instruments, sound libraries and heavy editing, c64 or nintendo emulators or they just built their own instruments I'd love to see you react to side 2
@@JimNewstead Yes! This music is quite unique and as you know not very accessible. I’d wager that this won’t be appealing to many people however I personally appreciate the creativity that comes with constructing these songs. From what I understand, this is the work of one guy who is the main composer and then has other musicians play the parts. In small doses this is brilliant music, glad to see you explore this type of music Jim!
On a technical and creative level, I appreciate this band every time I've heard them . It's not something I would reach for , but no problem with it coming up in a playlist. The growls in this band are not my preferred style ( just a matter of taste...I'm picky on growls.....Mikael rules!). I'm also not a big fan of symphonic metal. What I do like , is the use of folk , ethnic , and "weirdness".... Again , no judgement. I like plenty of bands that aren't accessible. I'd just need to be in the right frame of mind for a full album listen in my leisure time.....
I almost gave this one a pass after your previous Igorrr video. I'll say I like it better than that one, but it's still nothing I'd ever seek out again. I felt like I knew what you meant about it being built on computer, because it sounds a bit like an assembly of various rifs and sound bites. Too disjointed for me even though some parts are pretty cool. Thanks for sharing, regardless!
@@JimNewstead I wasn't correcting you, I was making a reference to Mel Brooks 'Young Frankenstein. Marty Feldman plays Igor czcams.com/video/nxxSIX3fmmo/video.html
It starts very beautiful, nothing wrong with the following heaviness. Bloody growling and screaming follows😡. Second song. Same recipe at the start. I don’t like the shakiness of the singing. Third song. What am I listening to? Totally not my kind of music. Fourth song. Again, I don’t like the singing. The music is not really appealing. Fifth song. The Orb does a better job with this kind of music. Igor, not for me definitely. I don’t think you noticed but the audio volume of the music goes up and down here and there.
If the music goes up and down it's part of the stutter/glitchiness of the style I think. I've checked the video and the volume is fixed the whole way through. I found it a tiring listen, but overall very interesting. Not sure I could sit through more than 20 minutes at a time though!
Jim you follow the best trends of best progressive metal. Thanx.
Oh please more!

Never heard that before. I liked it a lot, very diverse and inventive. I'm positively surprised. Thanks for the discovery.
Glad you like it!
You're a bit late for this show, but came at right moment, as Igorrr's career reached the zenith.

Both Spirituality and the previous one, Savage Sinusoid are really great, and more listenable than previous Igorrr LPs, nice choice!
Jim you are a legend, I haven’t watched it yet but as soon as I get home I will tune in. Amazing.

I don't think Igorrr albums are designed to be swallowed in one go...each song is like a bowl of ramen, and you don't eat 14 of those in a row...
I need a lie down after this…
