Actually he had been promoted to captain rank in between the war because he succeeded to capture some strategically important tops during intial phases of war.
So yes,he started as a soldier and martyred with Captain's rank in battlefield.
No started as Lt. And got *Veer-Gati* as Cap.
He started as a commissioned officer- Lieutenant.
He started as a lieutenant, dude. Not a soldier.

He was lieutenant when he reported to his mother unit but later in the war he was promoted to the rank of captain after some successful missions.
Rightly said he was lieutenant but as per rules Army don't allow a lieutenant to command the company of his teammates because it's like a learning phase u can say like an intern learns but then keeping view need of hour Army top brass decided to promote all lieutenants posted there to Captain Rank.
Mr. Batra was brave, a brilliant mind n was from JAK RIF rejiment.
He was promoted as captain after successfully capturing point 5140 leading a small company

Vikram Batra was the leading the 'D' ~ Delta Company of 13 J&K Regiment, while capturing this point Indian Army sustained zero casualty, which is why this operation has now become a textbook context for training soldiers in mountain warfare, this momentous mission was measured as the toughest in the hostile terrain keeping in mind the vantage point the enemies held. Some more authentic footage revealed in this trailer, is the firing of the 9K111 Fagot tube-launched SACLOS wire-guided anti-tank missile towards Point 4875 which was personally done by Lt. Col. Y.K. Joshi who has been the battalion commander of 13 J&K regiment. Point 4875 also witnessed some brutal hand-to-hand combat usually not regarded in modern warfare but Batra’s last hours have been pivotal in turning the tides of the war. Capt. Batra earned martyrdom while saving a junior officer Lt. Naveen Anabeuru who sustained severe leg injury due to explosion. Also, the rationale for showcasing the love interest was because Capt. Batra was in a serious relationship with a girl named Dimple, whom he planned to marry after the war but due to his death the girl never married anyone & continued to live a life as a teacher in Chandigarh (Punjab) with Vikram's memories, as mentioned in the biography 'Param Vir Vikram Batra' written by his father G.L. Batra, reference 'A Soldier's Love Story'
Another interesting fact, fellow soldier Rifleman Sanjay Kumar from 13 J&K too received the Param Vir Chakra (India’s highest gallantry award during War time) for fighting at the same mountain top Point 4875 along with Capt. Vikram Batra; it remains as an unprecedented feat in the annuals of Indian Military history, since no other Indian military companies within the regiment can claim about receiving multiple PVC for the same battle theatre.
