Diversity is an indicator of the richness and inclusivity of a country's history. So, why are questions raised about diversity in this country, particularly focusing on the Northeastern region of India?
The Northeastern region of India, which currently includes states like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura, is of extreme significance from a geographical, mythological, historical, and strategic perspective.
In ancient texts, the inhabitants of the Eastern mountain valleys and caves were referred to as "Kirata." The word "Kirata" is derived from the Sanskrit root "Kri Vikshepe," which means moving in a zigzag or irregular manner. Due to the winding nature of mountain terrain, the residents there did not have a straightforward movement but moved irregularly. Thus, the people living in mountainous and cave regions were called "Kirata." The usage of the term "Kirata" can be traced back to the Yajur Veda.
The verse in the Yajur Veda, "Sarobhyo Dhairamu Pashthavabhyo... Guhabhyah Kiratam Sanubhyo Jambakam Parvatebhyah Kim Purusham," suggests that for the best organization of the country, people should be appointed based on their knowledge of a specific region. The sage advises that (Guhabhyah) for people in mountain caves, (Kiratam) Kiratas should be appointed. In this context, the term "Kirata" is used to refer to individuals appointed in mountainous and cave regions.
In summary, the Northeastern region of India holds a special place in the country's history and culture, as evident from the ancient texts and their references to the Kirata people living in mountainous and cave areas. This region's unique geographical and cultural diversity has deep roots and significance in India's heritage.
