" This is why you let me do this sh!t first... " best line of the video ! Keep em coming !
LOL! Glad you liked that. I get a lot of value from watching other channels mess up so I don't make the same mistakes so yeah. Thanks for watching!
Greatest line in a CZcams video ever! You won the internet tonight my friend!
Another awesome mod! I think I see yet another project coming up on my calendar... Hopefully, someone at SOA is watching and taking notes!!
Hey there! Glad you caught this one. Figured you might be interested in it. I was actually just super happy to finally figure out how to disassemble the console LOL. Folks would probably laugh if they knew the behind the scenes. I spent half a day trying to figure out how to disassemble this thing, then reassembled it all before turning on a camera :) Anyway, thanks for watching and have a good one!
your videos are going to get me in all kinds of trouble....love it. I always thought the CT needed power in the back seat as well as the rear cargo area...now I know I can do it..thanks for "doing that shit first"
Great job! I love these kinda videos. I just don’t have the electrical knowledge to do these kinds of mods. I admire people like you who can do these mods.
I appreciated that you told us what gauge wire you used for this mod. On future videos, keep those details coming!
Excellent video and demo...really appreciate how thorough, clear, and concise you are in explaining your process, thanks much!
Picking my Crosstrek up Saturday, and this was the first thing I was planing on doing. Great Video, Great Timing!
Congrats in advance on the Crosstrek! New car? If so, then I guess you're as crazy as me to go drilling holes in a new car LOL. Regardless, good luck and thanks for watching!
Mine should be here in a few weeks! The community around this car seems to be pretty chill. I'm stoked (2021, 6 speed premium)
Great walk through!!! Thank you for explaining what is actually holding pieces in and secured!
Keep up the Good work! You made this and the rear 12v power center very easy with your step by step instructions. Everything came out Great! You are my favorite go to guy for upgrades on the Crosstrek.
Just found your videos…. I’m loving them. This is the kind of stuff I like to do to my car. I’m going to enjoy your videos.
Great job. You are my new go to guy for Mods. Thanks Tom
very happy to have found this channel! as a new crosstrek owner, you have inspired me to take on more DIY projects. thank you for the quality content
Welcome aboard! And congrats on the new Crosstrek! It's a fun and capable little car and I've enjoyed modifying it as I go. Good luck on any of your own future mods! Would love to hear about em!
Great video and links. Installed it this past weekend. Works great!
Woohoo! Awesome!!! Definitely no regrets on my end. One of my favorite mods :)
Yess! I did it!! Very well demonstrated!! Especially since I don't understand English very well 🤦♀️ thank you!!
You're my hero. Looking forward to sorting this one out for myself.
LOL! It was a fun one for sure. Good luck! I've got no regrets so far. Super convenient having an extra power panel there. Thanks for watching!
Great video, I'm going to try it out, I have to figure out how to undo the manual transmission part, will share the photos, also going to do the same power option on the back of the car, thanks for the ideas!!!
Fantastic video, Tom. Really enjoying your channel!
Awesome! Glad you enjoy it! Thank you for watching :)
Thanks!! We just bought a crosstrek and that was our only complaint. I did a similar install on my 4Runner and used a step bit for the holes.
Great video. I actually am a technician at Subaru and the whole time I was watching this I was hoping you would’ve poped the back panel of the center console off haha it’s a panel held on by 6 or 8 angled clips.
LOL! Yeah, another viewer was wondering why I didn't just do that and to be honest, I just didn't know it did that. Ah well. Got some great learnings on how to disassemble the thing LOL! Plus, it gave me an opportunity to clean things off a bit and made routing the wires easier. At least that's what I keep telling myself to justify the stupid oversight :)
Are you FREAKING KIDDING ME!!! ha ha ha ha
Thank you for this helpful video. My cousin whined because I didn't have a USB port for her phone (or a cup holder) when she sat in the back seat of my Crosstrek. Now one of those "problems" is solved.
Thanks for this video. A note though, in the 2023 model they've added a relay so that you can't remove the key while you have the shift know trigger in. So the only way to get it to shift with the engine off is to push the button inside the console.
I needed to figure out how to get the center console out of my 2023 Crosstrek because it didn't come with a USB or audio port inside the console... Just a blank plate. So I'm going to be installing a USB + USB-C port where the blank plate is. That way I have fast charging capabilities without needing to use the front aux port and having wires everywhere.
Great little mod again.
Thanks much!
the space you're using here, is used up in the forester for the air vents in the reat :) amazing little instructional video!
Dunno if I wanna say "bummer" or "cool"! LOL. On one hand, it'd be nice to have some extra environmental features back there, but on the other, I don't sit back there and I really dig now having some power there. Tough one. Either way, great comment for others to know in case someone watching this was considering doing it on a Forester. Thanks for sharing!
Great Job! I would have gone with black screws so they don't stand out as much. Keep up the great content
Great mod Tom, thanks for sharing.
You're very welcome. I love it! Super happy with it.
Just ordered the parts to do center console and rear storage area.
Great mod. Other reason I always come back to your channel and see what's yours new project is that you actually interactive with the people. When I see other folks that posting the video and never bother to response to the questions, or comments, then I never went back. That's really turn me off. By the way, I will be installing the RAM mount that you posted. Thank you for that.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words. I LOVE that RAM mount mod. Comes in handy all the time and the versatility is great. Good luck!
Excellent thank you. I'm planning on doing this to my Impreza sport. Thanks again 😃👍
Thanks for watching! Good luck with the Impreza! Not too difficult of a mod, but one I'm definitely glad I did. I use it often to this day :)
Thank you. I really need to get this done.
You can do it! :)
This is my new favorite chanel, especially since I'm a Subaru guy!
Ha! Thanks! I'll do my best to keep good stuff coming :)
Same!
Tom, now figure out how to get air vents back there... lol.
Yep, agree with everyone else. Another nice mod and great vid on how to do it. Thank You.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!
Great video man. I liked your solution to make the holes bigger, that's something I've fought before. Also, holy crap! Congrats on all those subs! That's crazy, but it's about time! You deserve it!
Thanks man! I've screwed up so many times on that stuff that finally my dad showed me this trick and I was like "oh yeah! duh!". I was gunna cut that part out of the video but figured I'd include where I messed up and how I went about fixing it in case it could help someone else. As for the subs, it's surreal for sure. The SDR video is a "one hit wonder" so far, but inspiring me to do more stuff I find interesting. Hopefully others will find it interesting as well. Thanks for all your support since I started the channel!
@@TomtheDilettante it was a "duh" moment for me too, it just makes sense, lol. I'm glad you left it in cause it helped me :p Never know which videos are gonna hit it big, your next video might perform just as well or better even. You deserve all these subs man, I think you had like 99 followers when I found your channel? Crazy. Congrats again man!
"This is why you let me do this sh$t first"! I love it! Another great upgrade! I may actually attempt this one.....thanks Tom!
haha. glad you liked it!
I did this in the hatch after watching your video. I drilled and screwed the nuts on. It did cross my mind about possible issues and maybe having to tear it apart. But I'm sure its every bit as good as OEM. Fingers crossed.
haha...fingers crossed is kind of a daily ritual for me too! that and knocking on wood LOL. The hatch power panel has been awesome and I haven't had any issues with it yet. This latest one is a welcome addition because (and maybe I'm just lazy or picky) I just don't like having to drape wires all over the place to use a USB port :P Anyway, thanks for watching and have a good one!
Well Tom, your videos have now inspired me to my SECOND mod to the Gray Ghost ('23 Crosstrek Sport). The interior hatchback button release & now this one.
In reviewing comments, I can answer the following: yeah, the rear of the center console can be removed simply. But running the wires nice & pretty along existing bundles would be impossible. I used a 1-1/8" drill for the holes. This allowed the plastic nut to secure the cylinders to the 'wall'. Also replaced the screws provided with machine screws & locking nuts for an even more solid finish.
Now for the big question...Which fuse socket did you tap into & why?? I was looking for power while the ignition/ACC were off, and chose slot '30'. But I hope the 'accent lights' of the unit won't drain the battery.
Cheers Tom & thank you for the great videos. Keep up the great work!!
so good this video!
Good job
Love the idea, tks
I should have followed your advice i had a wire come loose and had to disassemble the entire console
Great Vid! But, what was the point of the plastic nuts again? If they are meant to hold the sockets in place, then surely you would have to attach them from the back as you first tried. Doesn't enlarging the holes to fit the nut defeat its purpose? Why couldn't you just leave the holes at the first size and just not use the nuts?
Great Video
Glad you enjoyed it On top of having a new power area, I now know how to take apart the center console ;) win win.
Another great idea and great video Tom. And we are all grateful to you for doing this shit first. hahaha
LOL! Welp, I figure it's super helpful to me when I see others doing something...especially what NOT to do...so I try to do the same to "give back" :) Thanks for watching and your continued support!
I kept “Granny” for a year, my 2019 Crosstrek! Carvana gave me almost what I paid for it! I upgraded to a 2020 Outback XT Turbo. still haven’t put a rig in it yet. Haven’t made up my mind what to get. 73
OMG jealous! :) The Outback is a super nice rig...especially with a larger and turbo motor. I love my Crosstrek but the thing is underpowered as hell. I think my next move will be like yours. Good luck with the build out and thanks for watching! 73 de KD9PXF
If you're into it PLEASE do maybe a like rear passenger window addon vent. I've noticed with this car and mine, that if passengers are in the back the rear windows fog up due to the extra heat. It would be nice to have something to help with that.
Nice video.
Many thanks!
I will be doing this in my crosstrek soon. And for the rear hatch space.
Well done video, thanks for putting it together. I'm going to do something similar, but just the USB socket. I don't want to run power all the way up to the fuse box (I've already got a dash cam and a garmin wired in there) so could I just tap into the USB power already in the console?
In the first generation XV it's possible to соппесt directly into armrest's socket base.
I am doing something similar as far as wiring up a center console (great minds think alike) except i am putting my power distro set up in it. My plan was to use steel teeth locking nuts to anchor the machine screws, better or worse than nylon nuts in your opinion? Thanks for the content, happy new year! Oh yeah, are you happy with your Midland GMRS, I was considering the different options as well.
Great video and idea, thank you, will follow up, I have to figure out how to undo the shifter on my manual transmission, that may be different, can you share the info on all the hardware, thanks!!!
Thanks for watching. Links on the description including the specific panel i used. Hope that helps.
Not sure where to ground mine at. I don't have a bolt in that location. Got everything else wired up though ready to plug into power
My solution was corded lighter plug in the console socket with a triple outlet box double-side taped to the same area you installed your outlet. One socket has USB power and the other two for whatever. Con is no separate fuse.
End of your video shows a fire extinguisher mounted back of the front passenger seat headrest. I'd like to know how that was mounted as I can't find a good place for mine...or a bracket.
Excellent video. Somewhere you were taught how to communicate. USMC? You do it well.
Thanks for watching! The fire extinguisher mount isn't anything to be proud of yet. It's literally using the mount that came with the fire extinguisher, some heavy duty zip ties around the rods of the head rest, and some velcro straps. I'm still trying to think of what to fabricate to make this cooler and worthy of actually sharing LOL. Thanks also for the kind words on communication. I learned some in the Marines, and a lot in the professional world. But to be honest, talking to a camera alone is a totally different ballgame. But, it's something I wanted to try and get better at which is one of the various reasons I started a channel. Anyway, thanks and have a good one!
Ever thought about running power up to where your ram track is? I have a similar setup there and was thinking it would be nice to have a couple USB ports up top on that flat spot to plug phone/Garmin/HT into as opposed to running usb cords all the way up there from the console
I hadn't thought about that actually, but what a brilliant idea! Hmmm...might have to put some thought into that. If anything becomes of it, I'll call it the SuperGinger mod to ensure the proper credit for the idea :)
Did you know just the back piece comes out, under 10 seconds, just pry out from the bottom
Well drat! Might have to try this so I know for future reference. You referring to the "bucket well" insert of the center console?
@@TomtheDilettante yup I did the same thing to add 110v outlet and usb outlets
Lol. Well damn. Ah well. At least now I know how to take apart the center console lol! If I figure out how to do what you mention I'll have to film and share that so others don't accidentally waste time like me. Ill give you the credit ;-)
@@TomtheDilettante thank man, but no need, just helping out,
Thanks for all the tutorials, gave me ideas for dual battery setups in spare wheel well
Great mod Tom. I'm surprised you haven't added any Anderson Powerpole connector outlets. They are ubiquitous amongst HAMS. I use them on everything now. 73 de W1SMM Sean
What size hole saw did you end up using for the correct size? 👀🙏🏼💟
could easily wire it up with the nuts on the wire, and then screw them in. Put some blue locktite and it'll never loosen.
What number was the accessory fuse you used? 9?
Since you ran the wires before putting the console back in, you could have left the holes smaller and used the outlet ring nut.
You just needed to thread the wire through the nut, then hang the wire out the hole, then reach up and thread the ring nuts on (and glue in place). Have done this before.
Just found your videos, great detail. I have a crosstrek and looking to add some other power options. It's great to see how you take all the trim and panels out, I get a little nervous prying on the plastic pieces, something usually cracks or breaks. I've had pretty good success with my new 2020 though, things come apart a lot easier these days. I recently added a front & rear dash cam, was pretty easy. One question/conern with your fuse tap. You said the factory fuse was 7.5 and you put a 10 in for your addition. It's my understanding that the adding fuse needs to be lower than the one already installed. I watched several other videos on adding the fuse tap before I added the dash cam and they all said not to add a higher fuse to a lower amp socket. What's your take on this?
Hi there! Thanks for watching, and good question. I'm not a Subaru mechanic so take my advice with a grain of salt :) From what I could tell, the wire gauges to the back of the fuse block were all similar for the most part, regardless of the fuse in place on a particular circuit. The fuses I tapped were either unoccupied or for seldom used or unused electronics (e.g., I don't have Eyesight), so I personally felt comfortable using a fuse I subjectively judged acceptable for the circuit's combined max load. I'm also conscious of what I plug into various added outlets. The most load I've put on it so far has been to run a 12v Alpicool fridge, and I've so far had no problems.
I'm glad you pointed this out though. My official answer, absent actual manufacturer recommendations, would be to err on the side of caution and use a lower fuse if that is concern. Or, if comfortable, test it in a controlled environment before hand :)
Hope that helps a little. Thanks again and have a good one!
Which fuse tap did you use the micro or mini?
I like how if you're a back seat passenger you get power for your phone, and also guaranteed death by fire extinguisher in a collision. It's really the package deal
LMAO! Yeah, I suppose I should relocate that fire extinguisher. I never have anyone in the back seat so it hasn't come up as an issue, but still probably a good idea to move nonetheless. Good eye :)
@@TomtheDilettante XD I've seen some people mount them to the seat bolts on the passenger seat floor
very smart to use a piece of wood to make the hole bigger. I would of come up with some random solution and spend 2 hrs doing that and looking a lot sloppier.
also one thing I am confused about is, the fuse tappers. They have space for two fuses. What is the purpose of that? do I need to use both or just one? and when do I use both?
I can't seem to find a straight forward answer online.
Thanks and good question on the fuse taps. One slot is for the original circuit and the other slot is for your new circuit. So, for example, I pulled a 7.5 amp accessory fuse, put my tap into that slot, and put the 7.5 amp fuse into the tap's slot meant for the source / original circuit. So, electrically, it's as if you never did anything to the original circuit. I wanted 10 amp service to my power panel so I put a 10 amp fuse into the 2nd slot of the fuse tap (the one meant for the tapped circuit) and viola! 2 circuits :) Hope that makes sense and answers your question. Thanks for watching!
@@TomtheDilettante, thank you... I wondered the same thing!
Hey Billy and Cecil, sorry for the delayed reply. The reason the tapper has 2 fuse slots is because 1 is for the fuse you're tapping into (to keep the original fuse and circuit) and the other is for the add-on circuit. So 1 fuse slot becomes 2 circuits (1 original and 1 new). Hope that answers your question.
Nice vid! If you were not planning on using those nuts, why not just leave them off? Why drill out larger holes for clearance if they were not being used? Just curious...
Ah, sorry for any confusion. Those plastic nuts holding the sockets the faceplate were always going to be used. Question was do I leave them as is or try to sandwich the center console between them and the faceplate as well. That latter option, though doable would have sucked so I just ended up enlarging the holes to use as it should have. If I had done it right from the start, I would have made the holes the right size (larger) from the beginning. Hope that makes sense and answers your question. Thanks for watching!
@@TomtheDilettante, If I understand Elmer's question correctly, he was wondering why not simply leave the nuts off if you weren't going to use them to secure the panel to the console. The reason they need to be left on is that's what keeps the individual sockets attached to the frame of the power panel. Correct?
Hopefully, this isn’t too late for you to reply to… By changing the seven amp fuse to a 10 amp fuse, don’t you risk the wiring by having too much current for what it was originally rated? Also, what accessory is being powered by that line? If that was rated at 7 amp, and is in use, that really only leaves three more amps for your modification, is that accurate? It was a great video.
Those fuse taps have two fuse slots - one for the original circuit, and one for the expansion circuit. The hot (+12v) side of the original fuse should be the common side of the two new fuses.
Looks factory! What's the next Trek project going to be?!
Thanks! Got a Prinsu rack on the way ;) Also looking to clean up my wiring and install some under-hood lighting. Too many ideas, too little time.
@@TomtheDilettante Prinsu is going to look GREAT! Looking forward to seeing it!
Tom, what was the opening guitar track? Thanks.

My 2021 Sport has a cigarette lighter socket inside the console. Is it possible to simply wire the power in there? I wouldn't need one in the console if I had a panel on the back of the console like you installed!
My 2019 has a socket in the console as well, but I just find it to be inconveniently placed and don't use it much. Having a panel out in the open in the rear I find to be super convenient and I already use it regularly :) Not sure if that answers your question though.
@@TomtheDilettante why not wire up the new socket in parallel to the existing socket nearby?
@@jbinmd Fair question. Two reasons. (1) I wanted a dedicated circuit to this panel so it was independent of any factory circuits (just in casae); and (2) because I felt with too many sockets on a single circuit, I ran the risk of overloading the circuit and blowing out a fuse. This way I have a dedicated 10amp (I think that's what it was) circuit for this aux panel.
What you suggest is probably easier and would most likely work well. I have a tendency to over-think / over-engineer / over-complicate things from time to time LOL.
Hey Tom, I just finished the mod but I got it to work for a little while and now it is blowing up the 7.5 fuse. Any insight? Also the fuse tap I had to use a file to make it fit in the fuse box outlet. It what just a bit to chunky.
Hey Anthony, what are you plugging into it? If your device is drawing more than 7.5 amps, then it will blow the fuse. Or, if there's a short in the circuit somewhere, that may be blowing the fuse as well.
@@TomtheDilettante 😬😳 I was plugging an electric car jack (15A). I thought it was the same as the regular 12v in the front of the Crosstrek. I plugged it in the front one with no problems. “Mea culpa” 😅. Thanks brother for the video. It was a well explained and made easy one. I also did the back door button as well. 😎👍🏻🤗
"This is why you let me do this shit first" hahahahaha
LOL. I've always appreciated learning from other people's mistakes. Figured it can't hurt to return the favor when I can :)
I've got a question about rear vents.....Are there small vents underneath the the front seats that blow towards the back? And if there are, do they work for both Heat and AC? I've tried researching and found conflicting reports. I don't have a crosstrek yet and can't seem to find an answer.
no rear vents or airflow in my 2018 trek.
They do not have rear vents. The thing about the crosstrek is that it's not really an SUV or "Crossover" as they market it as. It is an economy car with a lift kit on it. Luxary items will not be found on a crosstrek, because it's just an Imprezza. The only difference is a few mechanical parts to make the lift kit work.
What's the name of the track at the end of the video
It's a track I got from a subscription based service called "Storyblocks" for content creators. It's entitled "Driving Inspiring Business Electronic" by Velimir Andreev according to the Storyblocks site.
I found what seems to be the same audio on this CZcams link: czcams.com/video/JWEIUegHfls/video.html
Hope that helps! Glad you liked it :)
what size hole saw did you go with???
Ended up going with a 1.5" hole saw to accommodate the sockets and the nuts. Don't take my word for it (or make my mistake though)...measure twice, cut once LOL.
Why not just pop that back panel of the center console off? I did that to install mine, way easier than having to get the whole thing apart.
Honestly? Because I didn't realize that was an option until viewers like yourself mentioned it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ah well, it made the wiring a little easier and I learned to to disassemble the thing. I will have to create a video showing your way though to help others potentially make a better choice than me :-) thanks for watching and chiming in!
Would love to see a video how to pop the back panel off~~~💟
What if someone breaks the window for that fire extinguisher? Free stuff you know
People who associate "theft" with "free" are, quite simply, cowards who are bereft of integrity, pride, and humanity. It's a possibility to be sure, but I'm not inclined to second guess every choice I make out of concern for our specie's shit bags :)
@@TomtheDilettante Hope you’re not inferring that I’m a coward. I’m just pointing out the perspective of suspects, with people this day and age. I was in Chicago, and I had my window smashed for a few quarters and an air freshener.
