- As much as we love big off-roading trucks and SUVs, that's not the only option when it comes to picking out (and modding) a vehicle for the job. Take Beckett, who extensively modified his 2014 Subaru Crosstrek into a near-perfect all-around rig for him. Check it out!

What a great modified car/trucklet! When I was his age (back in the mid 70s) it was all sports cars (I had a 1972 Saab Sonnet III that I bought as a wreck and fixed up). I really enjoyed how this guy feels pride in his car/modifications. This video made my day!
sonnets are such a great looking car!
I really wish Subaru made a WRX Crosstrek
You gonna be able to afford it?
@@pingpongballz5998 umm ok

@@cgreenfield6655 he isnt being rude, its actually a very good point, if little to no one can afford it and if it gets up there in price with like the wrangler rubicon, power wagon, or a toyota TRD pro, which one would you rather choose? something that is dedicated for this type of stuff or a modern wagon that will still only do light off-roading.

Love the boxer, love the ride, just need more power.
Oh and the CVT?

I felt a little more pep with an upgrade to just a dry cotton hi-flow DNA airfilter on Amazon for under $20US. I'm also contemplating intake manifold mods...and an unobnoxious Borla stainless exhaust to replace the rusty stocker. With just the airfilter, my MPG is over 40 by setting the cruise around the speed limit. The new 2.5L is a good start, and larger wheel openings fit taller tires after 2018, but my 2016 has that nice high EcoHitch that offers great departure angle by going THROUGH the rear bumper cover.
This college kid had a good idea with trimming several inches off the bottom of the bumper cover. That is another con of most CUVs for offroading...fragile body parts/panels. Wranglers can have sturdy steel bumpers, rockers, skids, corners, tube-fenders, etc.
Winchmounts and rear diff-lockers are available for most newer Subarus too.
Anyone else remember when TFL Truck made a "Don't lift your subaru" segment? Lol
Love these types of builds. Rare car to see modified for overland and this guy did most of the work himself.
Loving the mods. I have a 2019 base model Crosstrek, all stock. My 2021 Crosstrek Sport comes next month with the 2.5 motor. Very excited. Will be doing a ton of mods to my new one.
The true Jack of all trades, absolutely awesome
I just bought a 2015 Crosstrek Limited. I absolutely love it! Have been contemplating trying to find some easy trails to test it out. I am so glad you still love it.
As a guy who has had 10 Subarus, I really enjoyed this video. Some great mods, and it looks cool. Case has become a rockstar, and a real professional. Lookin' good, young man !
Great video. Interesting build. Case is a natural interviewer. A nice feature of the Crosstrek is that the safety cameras are in the wind screen so the front bumper mods & rock rash don't affect them.
Damn I'm tryna see more about that trailer set up, that shits dope.
Sweet ride! Thanks for sharing!
Damn imagine if it had a wrx engine in it... that would make the Crosstrek perfect
Wife and I had a Suzuki Sidekick, talking about under powered it was for sure, but one of the most awesome honest vehicle we ever owned and my wife liked it nearly much as I did, really nice Subaru well done and looks great too!
Sidekick was my first car as a teenager. I never wanted to get rid of it. Unfortunately it ended up with an electrical short and I was unequipped to deal with that at the time. Now I know I could've sorted that probably pretty simply now. Loved that car, Suzy the Suzuki!
@@jaybeemhardscrote7466 that is exactly what my wife named ours, Suzy,,,,, when we first got it my wife drove home in a really heavy snow storm and angrily announced that 4 wheel drive ain’t no better than our old Chevette, I asked did you lock the hubs and then put it in 4 wheel drive,,,,,,,,,,,,what do you mean lock the hubs she answered😂🤣😂🤣, I learned an important lesson, never assume what your partner knows. I’d love to have a new Jimney, almost worth going up to Canada to get one.
@@poppyneese1811 that's cool! I guess Suzy is a pretty obvious name for a Suzuki haha. Do they sell Jimnys in Canada?
@@jaybeemhardscrote7466 I have heard they do, but not for sure.
Very nice build, great job.
The POWER is NOT the problem in this car.
The problem is that people add so much EXTRA weight.
If you add an EXTRA 500 Lbs of equipment to your car,
then it will hurt the gas mileage and POWER.
Agreed, I just bought the 2.5L version and I have literally no complaints
Nice Ride bro! Time to get some extra HP now!
I own a crosstrek and the power is what keeps me from doing all this. I’m gonna wait and get a gladiator diesel here soon.
I’m currently lookin at a 2016 Crosstrek and this looks absolutely sick! Definitely using this to referencing
Nice mods! I have an unmodified '18 (so right after the redesign) and couldn't agree more with everything he said. Main downside is power; I don't mind the CVT but I wish I could get it to stop pretending it's an automatic transmission. CVTs should stay at the optimal RPM for best torque all the way up the speedometer, but this one freaking feigns gears and you can't turn it off.
Great looking vehicle and a very nice kid.
Good luck! 🍀
Case and Take, great job. Really enjoyed the video.
Note: You have an FB-20 with it's CVT match, if you want to up grade to an FA-24 you will need to mate it to the more robust CVT's for FA Turbos.
Was going to mention the FA24 swaps, but he knows about them already.. Crawford, as mentioned and Prime Motoring
Love this! Also love it for the fact it's/he is so practical about it. I'm sure he would've loved a Mustang, but long term, this one just seems like it provided a much better return on investment. Nice to see that these continue to hold up to the brand's rep.
Cool vid!! Thanks for sharing
Nicely done!
I got a 2.5L crosstrek and I cant wait to mod it out. Just got a tow hitch installed.
shweet ride..and video..well spoken, and done.
Sweet!!! This dude is pretty cool too
Wow! Great combo of mods! I’ve been debating on modifying my 2017 (no xmode). However, seeing your trailer on the back…. Very Cool!
Subaru should make a WRX crosstrek right? Something that you could actually do rally type driving in without breaking it.
I don't know maybe I would be the only guy who would buy one.
Nope.
I would vote for that, and buy one. Maybe the wilderness with a turbo.
I bought a 2021 2.5l model. It rules!!
Looking for a smaller Offroader , more agile after driving big 4x4 I can now say that the smaller the better, if you can get a rig that can do the job, that's the best rig and all that you need.
Great video
Sweet ride.
Looking good 😊
Cool guy, & cool Crosstrek! Can tell he really loves the car, really enjoyed this one guys!
Nice! 😀 Did you know Next year the new Subaru cross trek Wilderness Rain Forest Desert space will arrive
Nice!! Great build... :-)
Saw this a long time ago, and just today I bought a brand new '24 Crosstrek Sport with the 186hp engine swap. I'm stealing some of his ideas for mods!
Add a Pedal Commander and you will notice a positive power difference. My wife loves it on her 2018 Crosstrek. Nice rig
He did say he has a "tune" so he probably has something like that.
Nice setup!
I like it when you just cut your bumper like that. Gotta make it fit somehow haha
Nice mods
It’s been 2 years y’all should check back with him
Rollins pass would ding that up especially if you were to head towards James Peak. I take my F250 and bike on those.
Just had to have my 2013s valve body replaced on the CVT. Cost about $4k but that was through the dealership because I thought I might still be within warranty. I wasn't. Missed it by mileage more than time. I can honestly say it was worth it to me as some health issues would have prevented me from doing the job within a reasonable time.
I like the upper light’s
ADF rock 🤘🏼
As a outback sport owner the 170 we got from factory ain’t enough either
Dude might want to secure those wires going to the Hellas.. Talk about branch grabbers!
+1 or at least use black wire tube covers to make it look better.
Awesome rig my friend. 👍
Are the hood vents direct cut ? how does rain effect the engine ?
is there a way to see under the hood?
just got a 2018. I have other vehicles, but you basically have what I want to do to mine
How do you get the black out lights look? Did he buy already done covers like that or a tiny spray?
Nice.👍🏼
Nice car, well done 👍
Very well done build.
Cool car and great review.
It looks very nice. Very nice job good luck with it. 👍
I wanna do this to my 2015 Forrester
Linking the products shown in this video in the description would be killer.
Where did you get those cute hobby metal tags on back of car?
SWMBO has one; mother _gave_ it to her. Leather hearted little ute. Nothing fantastic, but a good all around hauler. No fan of the CVT, but it's peppy enough. 5 speed (or 6) manual would be nice. But hey, you can't beat the price.
The cross trek is the car I’m currently learning to drive on
It's a good car, particularly if you live in more rural areas where roads can be a hit or miss on quality. Even in town here I've watched regular Impreza's just bottom out on the "lowered" curbs going into some parking lots. So you get the advantages of a slight lift, but it still feels cat-like to drive if that's your thing.
@Tron Apostle The Subaru Baja Turbo...for when you wake up feeling like a lesbian, trapped in a man's body.
not sure if I missed it but where do you get the tools for the roofrack? couldnt find anything on amazon
It should be considered that swapping the weak standard engine for the much more powerful 2.4 liter turbo will over-stress the entire drivetrain, never designed for 260 hp/277 lb-ft. It'll cost a *lot* more than just the engine for a swap like that, to do it right, and might promote a reconsideration of the sentimental, "keeping it forever."
I was about to point this out. I think the new 2.5L in the Crosstrek Sport is a much better engine choice for a swap (I am assuming it's a version of the 2.5 in the Forester/ Outback). The Crosstrek's CVT is no match for the FA24's torque. That thing pulls my Ascent with a boat in tow up the mountain like they're nothing.
@@alejandropmorcate Boost is great in the mountains though.
The light bar on the bumper, is it one of those license plate bolt on with a little bar on it? Does anybody know? And the four Hellas, what size are they? I would have watched another 10 minutes with more details. Not totally my thing but I think it's very cool he made it his own and really uses it for adventure.
I was about to bash this rig but the trailer is cool
His homies lol definitely had that thing over loaded between all the add ons 4 people and pulling a trailer I'm surprised he didn't blow the CVT .. dude where.s my car. And thennn
I wanted to see his lights. especially the rear turn signal because he had his blacked out
How did the cvt work out ?
Would puting an FA 24 dit in it decrease the gas mileage if so by how much?
Just stick the WRX powertrain with the stick in this already Subaru!
No sometimes you need more horsepower because you put bigger tires on and that little wimpy motor is not gonna turn them over when you turn turning in the mud
Anyone know where to get that grill? All the ones I see online have a center post or other additional design.
It’s funny looking at these things like they are “off roading”. Just buy a truck. That skid plate has a huge lip that will catch and rip right off on anything significant. That said, they do look cool
Less is more. I'm hoping they offer a turbo with this and the forester!
U see this is true love
This guy rocks yall should look into him doing some reviews.

Hello, where can I get that cargo basket and tow hook?
His Crosstrek looks good. I have a 2016 Crosstrek. Just a FYI....you can get AT stock size tires now. Faulken Wildpeake AT trail. I put these on my Crosstrek. What has he done with the exhaust? Also, what is the front tow hook?
Thank you! I had a Nameless Performance 4” axle back but it didn’t fit with my EcoHitch so I put the muffler back on. And it’s a 3/4” D-shackle I picked up at 4WP.
@@beckettdougherty6518 I have a Borla axle back exhaust. Thinking about removing the big suitcase muffler/resonator in the middle. I guess you just put that shackle through the factory tow hook? I thought about doing that but figured it might “beat around” too muck because it isn’t a tight fit.
Love my crosstrek. Want to wap it out for a manual trans so i can supercharge it
underpowered for a good reason: dont want to put too much stress on the CVT while offroad
Surely a small turbo would enhance the performance somewhat
A TFL video that's not a Subaru diss?
Do you have any info on the trailer and or set up? I so want a RTT but thought about doing exactly what he has done. Just have a little trailer to pull for camping and put the RTT on the trailer. Any info would be great. Thank You.
I was really hoping for it to be a 6 spd that would have mad it complete
They only come auto or 5spd unfortunately but ej257 and trans from sti fit perfectly
@@BobbyB910 just ordered a 2022 with a six speed.
I've been debating getting crosstrek but not a fan of the cvt or outback with the 3.6 which is more reliable
@Tron Apostle True the company even hired a marketing team to specifically target that demographic. The women were heads of households and happen to be lesbian
Great video! What a classy young men!
When I leave my house I can count on seeing a crosstrek heavily modified like this. In oregon you cannot escape the heavily modified crosstreks. Im not a Subaru CVT fan so im always like, whhyyyyy.
They’re grossly underpowered & would otherwise be decent vehicles; even if it meant sacrificing some MPGs for more power.
@Tron Apostle haha, and kids that vape. 🤣 I've heard the stereotypes.
Somebody at Subaru is worshipping the false gods of efficiency, hence CVT, direct injection and maybe possibly soon, transverse front wheel drive.
@@krasnaludek298 The 2.5L, with around 30HP more, is rated for even better MPG in the Crosstrek than the 2.0L.
Anyone know where he got the front grill from
For sure...
The newer Crosstrek 2.5 L has a bit more HP and it's not nearly as pathetic, I've owned both and it just allows you to like, pass people lol
Very cool ride. Isn’t it possible to just tune it up? Larger turbo? Is the cvt the issue? Maybe switch to manual??? Those Subaru 4 bangers can churn out tons of power... just look at those STIs... maybe take parts and manual stick from STI or WRX. Should be fairly affordable and plug n play.
These don’t have turbos. I think these cars are too cheap to be spending thousands on mods. I hate Subaru anyway. Bad experience with them.
I personally don’t think it’s worth putting a turbo on this engine. I’d rather just wait then swap the entire powertrain once it dies.
What tires are on that Crosstrek
Looks like a lot of mods to tank gas milage and ride quality.
where and how did he get the connections to get a prototype rhino rack...
Daddy’s money
@@BobbyB910 Incorrect. I ran into a senior engineer while taking pictures and he offered a sponsored rack. Right place, right time.
Nice ride, if you ever wanted to you could PPF your car (paint protection film) to keep the scratching to a lesser degree. Just depends on how intense the area is.
