It was one of the key selling points for producer Dino DeLaurentiis. The animatronic Kong (which is only in the movie for a few seconds) and Kong on the WTC.

I dream that I’m standing at the base of an impossibly tall tower at night. Waaaaay above me I can just make out Kong’s explosive battle with the helicopters.

I remember seeing this movie back in the 70's. As a kid it seemed like the twin towers were built like 50 years before this film came out. I never remember a time when the towers weren't there. I wish I could go back in time and stop those people from crashing the planes in to these great buildings.
We’ve seen Kong climb up the Empire State Building, and we’ve seen him climb up the Twin Towers. We have yet to see him climb up One World Trade Center, or One Vanderbilt.
I totally agree with the comment about NYC without the twin towers will never be the same... It's only right to take a moment, reflect. All differences aside. As for me, any media containing the twin towers I've kept as a keepsake. Being a New Yorker most of my life it's still a joyous but painful memory. So I went in expecting a crapfest. I was surprised at how many really good sequences it had, how truly bloody it was, and how intense it was.
