To be honest, I do not see anything strange about their friendship. If anything, their friendship seems honest, and pure. Something that many of us hope to experience as adults. Nothing strange about it.
None of that is romantic love. It's the deep friendship of two women who feel the bonds of sisterly affections and have accepted each other as family. Trying to make it otherwise really is cheap.

Just wish Storm and Rogue were also close in Xmen 97 as they were in the original series. FFS they were shopping together in Ep 1 of the previous show. In 97, it's like they're strangers. 😭
I feel the same, but in fairness, the old cartoon basically substituted Jean for Rogue, essentially rewriting the relationship to fit on those characters instead of the way it was in the comics.
