3b frame and drivetrain , 2a tub with some bolt on army goodies ,
Quite likely.
Awesome love that motor
Thanks for the tip on the holly 1904. now i can put my f head in my 3a project. thanks so much
I had no idea Rick had a youtube channel. This is my kind of place!
Nice video! Tub looks like a late ‘46 or 47. Interesting Willy’s. Thanks for sharing. If you’re ever out east you should drive my early ‘46 column shift survivor.
I guessed militarized, civilian because of the headlights and gas filler location. That's as far as my flat fender knowledge goes. Fun video. Thanks Rick sharing.
I knew that was Traci's almost immediately. Extremely cool!
I’ll tell you what it is...... pure awesome!! I’m 54 and on my 35th jeep. I’ve only done two flat fenders. And I can’t wait for the next one.
Give your next 'flattie' a hopped up 225 Buick 'Odd Fire' V6.
You'll be glad you did.
Really enjoyed your video thanks for sharing best feature was the camping chair!👍
My 'mostly stock' CJ2A has it.
Hey Rick!! Been reading your stories since the early 1990s and have read all or most of your ultimate adventure "Adventures" as well!! Still have a ton of my Peterson's off road magazines!! Your knowledge of flatties is amazing man, reminds me of my dad with his on Model T's and old "hit n miss" maytag motors lol!! Stay safe out there and keep on wheeling America!!
Hey Charlie, thanks for the feedback, we'll pass it alone to Mr. Pewe.
Yup, bubbafied Cj2a for sure. Glad you know your stuff, very accurate info for sure. Amazing how many believe a 2a is military.
Lol the spoked wheel was actually later war wheel. Early war sheller wheel was like the 2a.
Mb/Gpw had tool boxes in rear wheel wells. The bumperetts are upside-down as well.
Not a jeep police man, or rivet counter, but glad others know the differences in flat fenders.
Keep up the good work!
My dads 47 was an L head, my grandpas 50 also had the Lhead my 53 pickup had the F head which I replaced with an english ford flathead. Almost everything fit but the air filter and a couple of other minor things. I used and 8v battery in it and always had plenty of juice.
That’s an awesome early 2A! I almost bought a column shift.
The tub looks a lot like a 48 the motor and frame you got me there? I have a 48 cj2a that I did a full frame up resto on mostly stock. painless 12 volt hares/shackle reversal/tilt column. but besides that go devil and all baby!!!!
My early '46 has a military front axle. The original civilian axle was obviously wrecked and replaced. There is also evidence that the axle housing had contacted the crank pulley at one time and flattened it. I straightened it and it runs true now. The rest of the Jeep is original except for the '79 Renegade wheels.
Hello, it’s beautiful. I have a 1972 cj 5, it has the rat fink on hood and one on each back quarters. It has printable motor in it, I love to be picked to ride with you on one of your runs. Ty
I just fell in 💕
Jeep Salad. I finished a VEP, '42 MB restoration last year and having a blast driving it. jeep #3 I thought the F head was an early CJ5 thing.
The 'F Head' was introduced in 1952 for the military MD (M38A1).
Production of the redesigned 'Jeep' was initially dedicated to fulfilling new military contracts, so the CJ5 version was not introduced to the public until October of 1954 as a 1955 model.
In the interim, a modified 'flatfender' with the new F Head engine was introduced as a 1953 model, the CJ3B, which was essentially a CJ3A with higher hood and cowl to accommodate the OHV setup. The CJ3B replaced the CJ3A (1949 - 1953) in the U.S. and sold through 1968 (and longer worldwide) alongside CJ5 models which were produced (US) through 1984.
The low hood 'flatfender' with L Head (side valve) engine was still offered in the U.S. as a two wheel drive DJ3A from 1955 (as 1956 model) through 1965.
Contracted production and models / dates for international sales differ.
If I'm not mistaken military jeeps used a full floating rear axle. This one has a semi-floating rear axle. Nonetheless it's a pretty cool piece of machinery.
WW2 'Jeeps' used a full float Dana 27, M38 used tapered (not full float) Dana 44 units.
It's a beautiful Jeep for someone that loves it.
1946 was the first year of the civilian jeep, sold to public. Mostly to forest services and firedept.
And so the 40-year CJ chronicle began. Thanks for the feedback.
Good information thank you
The grill tells it all.
Right!
My first guess is '46 - '47 civilian jeep with lots of older parts modded on.
It's quite the mongrel isn't it.
M38 grilles also folded forward with the same hinges as used for the tailgate. Civvy grilles lacked the hinges.
Yup
extremely cool bro!
M38 Jeep grills are also hinged at the bottom for removal. They're not bolted in the bottom like the 2a and 3a.
Correct. They used the same hinges as the tailgates.
cj3b because you said the motor was original to the jeep with a cj2a body made to look like a ww2 jeep. it's an easy way to upgrade the chassis, motor and drivetrain in earlier flatfenders but personally i like cj3b's better.
You likely have the answer.
To me the CJ3B will always be the 'Yogi Bear Jeep'.
Beautiful.. Talk about a swiss army knife. Love all the features. My gentrfied JK is no where near as interesting as this one.
hi there its just a NLJ model did it have 2 dash lights ? you are aa world of knowledge john
M38A1 chassis and drivetrain with 2A body. Or CJ3B chassis with 2A body.
Civilian models also have 2 fuel tanks. 1 under each seat.
2a body 3B chassis
It's just as you've said, Rick.
A CJ2A that someone wanted to look more 'military'. What's with the OHV engine, though?
Awesome, but man gatta wear those sandals with the jeans don’t you lol
Hello,
I have a what is it Willy's myself.
I bought it as a 1946 CJ-2-A.
BUT, It has the Hurricane F-head engine and the silly little box on the top right side of the hood to accommodate the carb and tiny after market air cleaner.
The tub is also raised one inch with square one inch metal tube blocks.
I am thinking of replacing those with a home made lift kit to allow the hood to NOT have a box on top of it.
I may also do hanging pedals in it.
The windshield down, wood blocks were deleted and small straps of metal welded to the body and windshield frame to keep the windshield in the upright position.
It has the original CJ rear bumper with a 1 7/8" ball.
It also has the round cross member behind the front bumper which may have been added because a six foot wide hydralic snow blade was added when it lived in Colo.
It now lives in the middle of Kansas and though we do get some snow every winter, the blade and all related parts are coming off in favor of using the Willy's as a small rock crawler/off road exploring vehicle.
The original CJ wheels have been reversed and the inner tube stem hole welded andclosed with a new hole drilled on the now outside.
I have a set of real magneism rims which have the Jeep and early ford lug pattern that are mounted with a set of LT-235-R-15 BFG All Terrian tires.
The Willy's has a T-90 trans.
No idea what the gears are but I suspect they are original.
I had the engine completely rebuilt with new everything.
The crank was not bad enough to go 10 under so it was just polished and micro thin brass shim material put between the rod and the new inserts.
All new valves and seat in the block and head.
New cam, lifters and push rods.
New oil pump.
New water pump.
Distributor was rebuilt.
New clutch and pressure plate.
Resurfaced the flywheel.
Radiator was rebuilt.
Everything else on the engine that could be replaced, was.
I still need to replace a couple of the main leaf springs as well as shackle bushings.
I am not in favor of the Patina as so many people like.
I will be doing some sheet metal work and a shiney paint job.
Not sure of the color yet.
New one piece glass.
The steering wheel bakealite was mostly gone so I made a new wood ring cover for it.
This allowed me to make the ring fatter for a better mor comfortable grip.
I make and sell all kinds of custom Hot Rods and parts.
The recovered wood wheels are popular.
The first one I made is on one of my Ford 8N tractors.
I will be installing a six point roll cage in the willy's with a lace on canvas top over the front seats only.
No Back seat.
The seats I will recovered in green canvas, same as the top ( because I bought two canvas former equipment drop parachutes to have top material for an earlier hot rod project.
but the Willy's will also have red cordaroy slip covers.
A few years ago I bought a one off hood ornamet cast in aluminum of a very freightened looking little man with his arms held up in front of his body like he is preparing for a crash.
His eyes are wide open as well as his mouth like he is screaming.
Two years ago I wrote a short story about the little guy and I named him Red Cordaroy. because someone had painted him with red cordaroy looking pants.
He also has a black tee shirt with a yellow smiley face on the back.
As well as black shoes.
He is going to be mounted in front of the windshield of the Willy's.
Gee's I kinda went over board with the comment.
That's All Folks
Understandable.
You love your Jeep!
When I saw that motor I thought CJ3B. That is one cool retro mod.
Nope it's a 2a
I thought CJ 3 as well
The body is not a 'B'.
The CJ3B had a noticeably higher hood and cowl to accommodate the F Head engine.
@@-oiiio-3993 , thanks for noting that you can’t understand an English sentence.
@@mdbostnmt1987 As you begin one with a lower case letter?
Perhaps you should learn to write one.
Muito lindo esse exemplar gosto muito jeep ♥️♥️
I have a 46-48 civittary Willys Jeep too!
my guess is that its post WWII Jeep rebuilt in Japan after the war. Many were rebuilt and used in the Korean "war" by the Japanese for the US government.
Mitsubishi also built them new under license.
Awww... what can I say, " she's a beaut "...
Some of the really early cj-2as did not have that box very few and only 1946 that i know of.
I have a Cj2a 1948 that has alot of features like mine but mine is all original no mismatch parts so I will say a 48 .
Stock L134 block with a F head top end.
I recognize that jeep😉
Right!
I'd call it a FrankenJeep...lol, Looks mostly 2A, maybe a late 3B with the F head...but the glove box throws me. You have three generations of this Willys here...lol. I think all windshields were interchangeable...my 48 2A had a M38 windshield before I replaced it. I'm curious about the passenger seat removal. I'm restoring a 48 2A and the previous owner had a lot of boxes of parts, so as I'm nearing completion...the seat mounts I installed do allow for passenger seat removal. Is this just a mil Jeep option? My passenger seat is original option for the 2A, and it's removable with the "new" mounts that were in my parts boxes. Previous owner did buy a lot of "new" parts, and most are primed in olive drab so maybe he was going to go for a mil Jeep like yours.
The cowl of a 'B' is noticeably taller.
So, everything can be explained away except for the F head being factory to that particular Willys. Hmmmm?
Jeep salad. That said, that's close to how I'd want one. Except paint it Navy grey.
Mine's 'Navy grey' with a Buick 225 'Odd Fire' V6, Kenne Bell equipped.
Same coker tires im running. I like The camp chair idea & i love the extra hook on the hood to latch to the windshield incase of wind. To bad will not work on a 64 CJ5 Willys i have.
CJ3B chassis with a 2A body.
Nope
Need at least 30 in them
Intéressant
J'ai le même problème et je trouve pas d'information 😅
Never knew 15 inch rims were an option back then.
Please flip over those bumperettes! Otherwise, great Jeep!
1952 m38 a1 gas cap size gives it away
What happened to the small air cooled jeep we had in the Corp ?
Maybe just the CJ2 supposedly they were never released to the public
The F Head did not exist in 1945 - 46.
👍
It is ACJ3B
A 3b with lowered dash and 3a hood.
Nope
Nope
😁It's a Willys. Duh. Whatdidiwin 🤔
DRIVERS MEETING!!! Before we hit the trail today, can anyone guess what model Jeep this...
My 'short answer' when asked of mine is "this and that" or "a flatfender".
Mine (straight titled as a '46) has a steel repop body with MB/GPW glove box opening, otherwise unique dash, 'pioneer tool' dimples on passenger side, tailgate, no CJ2A style drain holes, 2A / 3A grille, M38 windshield frame, hopped up (Kenne Bell equipped) 225 Buick 'Odd Fire' V6 with 4 speed, T90 + Warn overdrive, fenderwell headers... .
It's a Jeep.
Looks like my cj3a
Not a 3B chassis as it has a bottom mount radiator unless that is part of the salad.
What year? I didn't catch that. I was raised on a 49.
The frame looks 3a but you said the the f-head is original Was it an APU jeep?
Very good question.
Bastrize cj2a, when I grow up I want to be in the army
Kind of looks like a CJ2a
Im impressed you air down to 10 psi. Lowest ive been is 18.
I'd say it's a '46. i just looked at a '47, what does BOD on the serial number plate mean? can anyone tell me?
2-a or 3.
A basterize cj2a
Leftover parts from Rick's backyard or mtn lair
Yup, good call.
CJ-3B
2a
B's had a higher hood and cowl. This is not a B.
Looks like a 46 CJ2A...
If it were right hand drive I'd have said maybe one of the odd model India built Mahindras.
Mitsubishi built RHD Jeeps under license for decades.
cj3a with cj3b frame
Nope
Only if someone welded 2A bow sockets on the corners. Who would do that?
CJ3A
M38 a1
The body is entirely different.
Its an m38 jeep. It was used by the american during the korean war?
That is not an M38.
cj 3b
Keiser made
It's a cj2a it will never be a MB
Pinto mtr.
Cj3a
M38?
Nope
M38 would have hinged grille, different headlamp buckets, battery box lid on cowl, pioneer tool indents on passenger side, different w/s frame, no CJ2A top bow mounting sockets, ... .
might be a 1946 ..Civilian..
cj3a
this is a civilian jeep never served and was dressed up to look military--- seats are not mb or gpw
Those are, indeed, the higher back 'civvy' seats.
Looks like a Ford
No, it does not.
That's not stock in there
Im saying 1941
Not even.
I can spot a bastardrize want to be WW2 Jeep a mile away
I can't stand want to be WW2 Jeep's
You do you, I have no problem with someone making their own dream. Thats what makes great jeeps!
I’ve got a really nice ‘76 CJ7 if anyone’s interested.
_Waaaahhhh._
Get shut of that terrible music just terrible 😞
