    The epigenetic of seed saving is quite facinating. I've managed to get hold of some Egyptian Walking Onions. Excited to get that established in my food forest nook.

      Oh yes, it is an interesting topic. Walking onions are a great addition to a wilder food space for sure.

    Thanks, as always for the great info. So the key seems to be to know someone who's already growing great onions near you and grab some seeds!

      Absolutely! Local seeds seem to be the key to good strong growth in most veggies I am discovering

    This is so interesting!! I have a question about saving seeds from 6 or so different onions. Do you mix all the seeds together or do you keep them separately and continue to plant them separately? Hopefully you understand my question. Thank you! 🙏 From Tauranga 💚

      Then I mix them all together, and share them with friends and family so everyone gets some of each.

    How do you store them over winter to use again in the spring? What keeps them from rotting? I'm sorry if you said this information and I missed it. I'm always running around like crazy lol

      It is OK, I don't remember if I said it or not haha. It needs to be cool and dry with plenty of air exchange so they don't rot.

    I planted brown onions that I bought from the supermarket in Melbourne and collected the seeds from them. I got a couple of dozen onions but many tried to flower. Are supermarket onions long day onions?

    • @FantailValleyHomestead
      @FantailValleyHomestead  Před 5 měsíci

      It would depend where the onions are grown commercially, I think the line cut off for short day vs long day is about 37 latitude, which must mean most if not all of OZ needs long day ones? though I would expect somewhere like Perth would be hot enough to need short day onions. So basically, it depends where they were grown, if they were grown locally to you they are likely to be long day onions.

      For early seeding onions you cut back the stem that seeds once its curved round. And your onions woll carry on growing. Just cut ut where it exits the plant.
