This is a PREVIEW of the Canon EOS R5C. Is the R5C just an R5 with a fan attached, the answer is no, it's much more. This is my preview and as soon as we get our hands on one, we will start our review. This will be a great stills and video-centric camera, you kind of get the best of both worlds. If you already have a Canon EOS R5 and you're happy with it, the R5C is not for you. If you need more video features, then it might be worth a look.
This video was filmed with the Canon EOS R5 Canon.us/r5fro

I smile everytime I see your note sheet because it looks like you diligently write out all the points you want to mention and then you yellow highlight everyone one of them.
It's to make it easier to read since he has condition that makes it harder. Perfectly reasonable. Just like slapping a fan on R5 to make overheating go away.
I always love how you give the non-sugar coated look at new cameras.
100%!!!
I think Cannon missed the boat not including IBIS that can be switched off.
Wow, this actually seems like a true hybrid camera. It seems to be full-on both photo and video. Two cameras in one. Great job Canon
Hi Jared, are you planning on doing a full tutorial and setup on the R5C like you did with the R5? This was very informative on the R5 and useful for initial setup, especially for video! Thank you sir!
Gosh I loved that first minute. Thank you for being great Jared
Interesting price point. I hope we continue to see this kind of variety of RF bodies. Maybe stills cameras on par with the Rebel line for people just jumping into the new system. And bundle the damn adapters! 😂
I've been waiting for a review on this for SO LONG!
Cinema cameras don't have IBIS (Arri, Red, Blackmagic, Z Cam etc), because they usually sit on a tripod / dolly / crane / stabiliser. There are not many "handheld" shots (compared to all other) in cinema.
R5C is not a cinema camera, its a Hybrid camera.
@@harryvuemedia5106 you don't need ibis for stills.
@@harryvuemedia5106 it is a cinema camera… lol
I was gonna order R5 C but lack of IBIS & Micro HDMI port just killed that deal for me.
I will go with Nikon Z9
Man the way you explain everything is just dope and addictive. Your videos are awesome 😎
Glad you respected the embargo! It’s a shame Canon USA didn’t with their two videos! 😂😂😂😂
What? What time did they go live
@@froknowsphoto Way before, I watched them 3 or 4 hours before the official announcement...but they were removed again like an hour before the announcement
I see they put them up at modbifht
@@froknowsphoto their two videos went live 7 hours ago. Whoops.
@@froknowsphoto modbifht ?
I do prefer not having the wobbly IBIS unless it can be turned off and keep the lens IS on which isn't the case right now. This camera is totally perfect to me. The only thing is I would have preferred something in a FX3/a7siii form factor but i can do with it. *chef kiss*
I was wondering if the extra power needed to run this camera and lens at 8k 60 will be included with the camera or will people need to research the external power supply too?
I don’t think I’ve been on set where the cam operator would have ibis turned on (most cinema camera don’t have ibis I think). If this is meant to be more of a “cinema” camera then you would think the people using it would have it rigged up in a cage, on a gimbal, dolly etc. so I’m sure Canon didn’t want to make it more expensive for a feature that the target market won’t even use
Absolutely! Its crazy because it seems like people will criticize everything this day regardless s of how good it is especially if they dont know about the reasons. That was the case with 8k overheat on a weather sealed hybrid body and now those videographers get the variant for their needs and the photographers criticize things without having an idea about the real world use case
Yeah, I imagine the missing IBIS is more of an issue for photographers going hand held.
@@nerfbutt and even then it’s somewhat overhyped. As IBIS will usually only help you for stills and landscape etc. you can’t lower the shutter speed thinking IBIS will compensate when shooting people/moving subjects.
I LOVE my Pentax 645z.
i never tried one.
Can't wait to see Phillip Bloom's review of the Canon EOS R5C.
@@froknowsphoto ya really should!
For the missing IBIS I think an important factor is the cooling. A free-floating sensor is way harder to cool than a locked sensor attached to a cooling-block which I guess is used in this camera. At least that's what Blackmagicdesign argued for it's camera line some years ago regarding IBIS.
This is absolutely true. I recently picked up an A7IV, and turning off the IBIS nets a HUGE increase in record time before overheating. My guess is those gains are even better if you have the sensor completely locked down.
This is like a new aged 1DC. Love it!
Great video! I'm thinking to buy this but not sure if it is suitable for what I am doing most. Rally Photography heavily focused on photo but some video as well. Since it's basically the R5 it should be totally fine, right?
I stayed up for this 📷
(4 AM in California)
No IBIS? Lame.
Everything else: Sweet.
same
Would you still buy I am only shooting one wedding but otherwise mostly video
@@MadaAtoms I personally will be buying at least one of these to pair with my R5. Whether or not you should buy one depends on many factors. My full-time job is a photographer/videographer for weddings, quinceañeras, sweet sixteens, and portrait sessions. Having a camera that covers both photo and video with great quality allows me save money instead of buying dedicated cameras for each. The lack of weather sealing; however, will mean that I'll keep my R5 for rainy days.
Dang! I'm still using my 5dMiii and waiting to upgrade later this year. This is an impressive camera!
The 8k60 is an interesting prospect, but I would rather have had IBIS and a full sized HDMI port… I’ll stick with my R5 until the R1 comes out.
That’s what I thought too, but now I’m figuring you can shoot in 8K, and just crop into 4K and have plenty to stabilize with
Thanks for letting us now
I assume you don't record video, because if you did you would be all over this camera
@@burritobrosvideos8060 Your assumption, as most assumptions go, is wrong. I output 8k ProRes Raw to an Atomos Ninja V+... with no overheating, no record limits, and the ability to plug the SSD I record to directly into my editing workstation.
Thank you Jared for this great review
IBIS actually means that the sensor simply floats and it's corrected electronically. Thus, there is no "turn off" feature. There is only "stabilize" and "no stabilization active".
Glad to see the designers who worked on the Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c/n still have a job.
That is a really good idea from Canon . They already spent most of the money on the r5 so it womt be as expansive as a whole new model would be and put ports and fans etc in. Im glad they have two models cause i will still buy the r5 but for those that need to film longer clips etc they have this camera .
Thankyou Nikon Z9
I think the reason for not having IBIS is the fan itself. The airflow would move the sensor a tiny bit (IBIS sensors are not fixed that stable).
I just love to hear it from you Jared.!!
Without IBIS they really should've added internal ND filters.
If it had internal ND's I honestly would've bought it to replace my current cinema camera with a perfect hybrid. Now I will have to keep my C200 and at that point I'd rather have a regular R5 as a stills/backup video camera.
yes that is weird, but in the comments I saw a reasonable explanation. The cooling of the chip is probably mounted directly on it. All for the sake of 8K which, to be frank, I dont give a S.. about. MUUUCH rather have ND
@@Mintyseden Yeah. The mechanical shutter might also prohibit the filter mechanism I suspect. Perhaps they could make an R3C with a fast readout sensor that only uses the electronic shutter for stills but has internal ND's for video.
Interesting camera for a hybrid cinema/photographer. Don't care really care about the missing IBIS but Internal ND should be mandatory in 2022. The specs are impressive when compared to the FX3.
Perfect Camera for me. To match my R5. A cam to B cam. Switch out Cameras according to Shoot. Use R5c to shoot video on Weebil S, use R5 HQ fine for B-roll and behind the screen, photos. Only thing now is to match up cam footage, maybe timecode.
Just because it has a fan doesn't necessarily mean that it is any less weather sealed than the regular r5. In the Panasonic S1H, for example, the cooling chamber only has the fans and an exposed area of heat sink. So, yes, you have to have a (probably caulked) port for a wire to run the fan, but this also true for the wiring to the flippy screen. If you examine the B&H page for the regular R5, there is no mention of weather sealing on the body either. Doesn't mean it doesn't have it!
How long is the run time while shooting in 4k with just the updated firmware.
Fro - When in still mode, can we hit the same red record butting on this to switch instantly to video C3 ? Otherwise the wait time could be a sport shooters deal breaker
R5 with a fan slapped on it love your sense of humor.😂
Can it record from 8k downsampled 4k in 60p?
I'll stick with the Sony FX3 😬
Hey Jared. fellow Philly. Normally IBIS is removed for video because it’s impossible for them work properly with Built in ND filters. Which is what makes this decision even more confusing. Why remove the IBIS but not put in NDs is really confusing.
I wish they would have explained that.
Thought, we use them outside all the time
I didn't know that, but it makes the decision even stranger.
Yeah I agree it’s kind of confusing only things I could think of.
1.Because there’s not enough room.
2. Because of the power shortage
3. So people still buy R5.
4. So people do not complain about the wobbling affects At wide-angle‘s
@@coalandsteelrailroadvideos1342 my guess is power limitation
I have a question. If you could please answer it as I am trying to get back into CZcams. What camera do you personally use to shoot this video? And since most likely is going to be way out of my budget, can you please tell me in your experience which camera literally half the price of your I can use that can get me close to yoour video quality? I am only worry about video and easy if use. Not loaded with features. The only thing that comes to mind is decent quality at low light. Thank you so much by the way. Have learned a ton watching some of the videos.
I was getting ready to get a c70, but this is making me consider an r5c now. The ibis isn't a deal breaker for me as I've never relied on it in a camera, I used rigs and gimbals when needed. I like the fact that it's a hybrid photo and video. The DGO on the c70 is still making me lean that way as I may stick with my EOS r for photos and have it as a separate camera.
what did you end up choosing...R5C I hope
@@sydneynomura281 I went with the c70. I shoot mainly video and we have an EOSr already. I’ll get an r5c as my next B cam.
That c70 is glorious. The R5c is great but I definitely prefer the workflow and image of the C70
For what it's worth, regarding the IBIS, I totally agree with the fact that IBIS is great when you're running and gunning. But. With Cine cameras, you don't typically Run and gun with those. Do we criticise Alexa LF's and RED Monstros for not having IBIS? Of course not. I'd argue most cinematographers typically don't want ibis at all. I'm sure there were engineering decisions in mind when removing IBIS from this one.
Can the fan be shut iff? And, curious to your opinion as to will fan noise become an issue?
As an R5 owner, I'm not the least bit jilted. I don't do video much, but when I do it's not at the level this beast can do it. I'll keep my R5 and it's IBIS. I did think it was going to come in closer to the C70 in price than it did.
Apologizing if already mentioned, but likely lack of IBIS stems from the increase in cooling efficiency and simplification of design of cooling a sensor with a heat sink hard mounted to it instead of having to accommodate a moving sensor. Is it not true that some of the other cameras in this form factor that shoot high end video also do not have IBIS? I never shoot video, am a VERY happy R5 user, and will never buy this camera, so just curious if IBIS is a standard feature in all of the other mirrorless form factor high data rate video capable cameras out there?
3:55 The Image Stabilization (IS) in the lens. There can be no IBIS in a lens.
What a beauty of camera!
Hi, thank you for sharing this interesting video. I have a question please: can you tell me which zoom lens could I buy? I would like a 24-105mm or more for making 4K documentaries around the world? Thank you.
Jared,
Nice preview. Have they stuck with keeping an SD card in there? Or do we have 2 x CF Express cards?
Good question. I think its still the 1 cfexpress
@Jared, Canon Europe also confirms that R5 has DPAF2 over DPAF1 on R5C and C70.. DPAF2 for stills, DPAF1 for video. Are the same between r5 and R5c R5c used the same AF as the R5 (Dual Pixel CMOS AF II) when in video mode and am VERY disappointed to find out that the R5c uses the same AF as the C70 (Dual Pixel CMOS AF with iTR AF X).
Hey bro I always check your show to get great reviews on cameras. My wife been asking me for a camera so she can take photos in the professional level and I been interested in getting the canon r5, but now I see that canon is releasing the r5c with the heating issue solved, I like to take videos and she wants to take pictures. Since it is gonna be our first Camera should I go with the R5c.
Cool camera. I was hoping for Clog2. My only issues with the R5 were the recording time/heat problem and the sensor not having much in the way of DR for the video function. The R5C address' one of those problems but the dynamic range one is still there.
Ill be waiting to see if they bring out a full frame version of the c70/c300mkiii with the RF mount!
Clog2 doesn't really have a point in an R5. You can not take out more DR then the sensor offers, even with log. So if the sensor supplies just 14 stops it will not supply more with clog2 even if it would support up to 16 stops (or 18?).
@@Rootch-jt1xy true! All the same, it's DR in stills is excellent but it's DR in video is so-so. That's all. When it's the same sensor you can't expect miracles, but Clog 2 is a much flatter profile and every little helps
Are you at some point going to do a user guide video on the R5C like you did with the R5? Thanks!
what in the S1H
This one would be perfect for me. Cause I like photos and videos. Video a little more so ill have fun with that, But Im glad to see that we still get the same resolution at the original R5
If it had IBIS, I'd be ordering one today.
I cannot understand why they'd not put IBIS on for stills and allow you to lock it off for video IF you so wished. That seems a no brainer for me.
But, what do I know?
Hi Jared I like photo first two so what do you recommend
The specs are crazy on this!
Electronic stabilization... Meaning your original image (UHD DCI 4K) will be lost, so you'll lose some of the original resolution you'd otherwise have without ES, but you gain some stabilization which would mimic IBIS. It's akin to downsampling from 8K to 4K except you're cropping your footage down as it's being shot. Which if you are in a run-and-gun situation, is a good tradeoff if your subject is in motion.
You still have OIS to help stabilize the footage, you're just asking the camera to shave off some of the image as it records so it can stabilize while you're shooting instead of doing it in-post.
Jared, will you do a photography-centric review of the R5C? Hard to find on CZcams. Most reviews are for video. It would be nice to know if the R5C is on a par with the R5 for photo, even without IBIS. Thanks for considering this wish ;-)
Why would Canon revert back to AF I on the R5C? Do you think that it is one of many "little" things they did to reduce power consumption (which translates to heat)? Just seems like a step backwards. As you mentioned, if you're shooting stills and
Any news on the R5C? I went to order one today and saw that it was no longer on the Canon website, called and they told me it is no longer for sale?
Sold off my R5 a few months after launch. The overheating was an issue for me. Really liking my R3, though they should have done a few things differently. Currently waiting for the R1 and the R-mount C100/200 (depending on specs)
Does the r3 have pixel binning in 4k or does it shoot 6k 120 no pixel binning ?
What do you miss on the R3?
@@nunooliveira4257 😀 PIXELS. 24 is a joke. Nikon z9 and A1 is making a fool out of R3. Wait for the R1....but when will that come out? 2023/2024?
@@neo_man A joke? its the standard range for professional camera. An the R3 ist even a competition for the A1. The "3" range is targeted as speed/sport photography and is currently the only one having an eye focus which basically beats every competition in usability. The competition for the A1 is actually the R5. And interestingly, for nearly half the prize its actually better in most specs than the A1. We can only wonder what the R1 will be alotugh I dont want to get excited to early as people will hype things up so much these days that even when its fantastic, it will receive immersive hate.
Buy Sony a1 instead.
Don't die with canon, Sony all the way.
I just keep looking at this funny design to make sure it’s a r5 with a fan🤣
I got a Canon 5D Mark IV, i feel like i been under a rock that I haven't seen anyone that I follow photography-wise talking about this camera and its been out for so long, until recently that is, now I'm here thinking should I switch and why? just because is the lastest new toy in my braket, idk I'm still watching tons of videos about and now there is this R5 C, gosh it will never end, they cant really give you a top camera with the features that everyone would want.
If I didn't already own an R5 I might get an R5C. 8K sounded great to me until I had to edit it and I don't even have an 8K screen. I would call the R5 a still camera for photographers who sometimes want to shoot great video and I would call the R5 a cinema camera for cinematographers who sometimes want to take great stills.
In some way that's exactly how they are meant to be used/targeted. They are hybrids, but still focused on specific needs. Most of the hate online was for clicks and total nonsense like criticizing the first available 8k hybrid with weather sealing which fulfilled all the wished people wanted for overheating after recording around 25 minute, when in reality you couldn't even find enough space for recording half the length ^^. (or that videographers who actually do use that stuff will buy a dedicated deinem camera and not use a hybrid photo camera for this work)
The Z 9 literally does all this does, without the fan!
Not exactly some of the recording features are different.
It literally doesn’t
@@stepheneckert4006 with the firmware update it will be able to do 8k 60FPS RAW internally, and ProRes Raw internally in a much more efficient format, it can do it on battery power alone, not with the adapter and so much more and all that without the bulk of the fan
@@stepheneckert4006 It "literally" does. Why buy this at this price when 1k more you get a much better and versatile camera in the z9

Great video!
I still stuck with 5D MK IV...
Canon sales team says R5C's weather resistance is the same as R5. Jared, can you please confirm?
I'm sorry was an IBIS? I'm newbie here just learning
It’s a little early for an April’s fool Jared. Brilliant.
Pros will love this camera! Ppl who don’t even own a camera but love to comment like they do will hate it and complain about something
So it's an R5 with a fan AND some software tweaks for $600 more.
At $4500 you're nearly up to the cost of a Z9 which should get the 8k 60fps update before the R5c launches. I guess the one advantage of the R5c is they it sounds like you will actually be able to buy it, unlike the Z9. However, the lack of IBIS in the R5c is a pretty glaring omission. Maybe some videographers won't mind or prefer it this way, but considering that you can lock IBIS in other cameras it was pretty clearly just a cost saving measure to leave it out.
You are wrong in so many ways haha
I think by March this camera will be outdated. The Lack of Weather sealing is just a no go. I live by the water and this camera does not look like it is robust enough to handle the elements I work in. I can just imagine Mortin Hilmer in Svalbard with this camera now! I truly hope the new R1 is going to be much better. We need the healthy competition from all makers to push each other. It creates a win win scenario for us end users!
I would imagine the fan would get noisy over time if it does not make a noise now anyway.
I think that the r5C doesn't have ibis because the cinema buyers normally uses a gimbal to do their job.
Doesn’t help the stills side of things though…….. and this is a hybrid so it should be able to both… if you can lock the censor on a std R5 it must lock somehow so why take that away from stills shooters again it’s a hybrid it should have had nothing taken away from what the std R5 did
@@MrJak427 ibis is honestly for amateurs and isn't needed.
It’s Funny, I tend to show up late to the party. Sony A7s3 shooter turned R5 shooter. I prefer the Canon. Can’t tell you why but perhaps it’s just the ergonomics or that i just find it more pleasing to use. Overheating is an issue. Strange but there it is.
Who won the give away?
Jeremy Parr Jared I don't no much about migpixcell or videos but this camera looks and sounds good yours truly Jeremy Parr
One No-IBIS theory is the sensor is locked in to support upcoming RF cine glass and some physics involved there...possibly. That said, it's a deal breaker here unfortunately,
finally! A suitable b cam to my 90d!!
I hope this makes Sony add false color and other pro video features to the FX3
What Nikon camera can this be compared to?
I just want an R6C, 4k raw light with 60p, IBIS and dual pixel 2 AF
I wonder if Canon will announce the C5R in april
Great preview Jared. I'm happy this is not for me, sticking with my R5/6.
This man just said the sentence “full-frame 8k in 12 bit RAW up to 60p internally” and I soiled myself
Audio record while 120fps? 🤗
14bit or 10bit in stills mode?
Happy birthday jared polin 😍
Interesting camera. I would miss the IBIS and weather sealing of the R5. Seems like this is a good camera for a true hybrid shooter. I've never met a true hybrid shooter. Most folks I work with have a camera for cinema and a camera for stills. But not one for both. I would not use R5C for a video project, I would lean toward the C70 or the C300 mark iii.
The r5c has better video quality than bot of those
My guess is that there is no IBIS because that would mostly negate the benefits or having a fan, you can cool the sensor much better if it's directly attached to an heatsink
thats actually a great explanation of their decision. That makes sense
The sony fx3 has fans and IBIS
@@shuggfilmzandstudio2354 you can have both, but the cooling will surely be much better without the IBIS because of the heatsinks
