    What I learned form watching this video is I need to find a new word to use other than...."fantastic". Also, we filmed this video at the end of last year prior to the R5C being announced. But even with that being announced, it wouldn't have fit into this particular video. Maybe a future one for R5 vs R5C, we will see.

      I'm going to wait and see what the RP2 looks like. R5m R6 and now R3's are experiencing lockups/freezes. Its not good enough for the prices people pay. I'm still on 6d2 and won't be switching just yet.

    Just got the R6. Budget was a big factor, especially after adding the storage options. The R6 allowed me to get a beter lens with the camera (RF 24-70 f2.8 IS USM). Still blown away by the possibilities. Tried an adapted EF 135 f/2 USM in the middle of the night at ISO 25600 and 1/15 of a second. Handheld. That gives a usable image. This should not be possible. Looking forward to landscape photography using moonlight.

      Yeah, but only 20 MP. Kinda puts a limit on cropping photos when you need to edit.

      would you say it's better to get the 24-70 RF version or the 24-70 EF II version with adapter? Regarding price and everything

    • @mrtnsnp
      @mrtnsnp Před 2 lety +2

      @@vogelspotten If you can afford it, get the RF version. The adapter is not bad, but the adapted result gives a very front-heavy lens. And I find changing the lens with the adapter a little more of a hassle. On the other hand, if you can get a 'bargain' EF 24-70 II, then it is certainly an option. I can't afford to replace all glass at once, so the adapter is great to have.

  • @tomhalbouty3653

    I purchased an R6 and returned it for the R5. The R5 simply permitted deeper cropping (I know you don't really like cropping Jared). I enjoy shooting wildlife and the extra resolution does come in handy for bird photography. I agree that both are great cameras and both work better with EF lens than any of my old EF bodies.

  • @SterlingSteves1
    @SterlingSteves1 Před 2 lety +6

    Full time pro here - shoot weddings, portraits, headshots, sports, etc. I totally came to the same conclusion. I have an R5 and it rocks for what I do and I do love the liberty I have in cropping. When you are shooting on the go, the freedom to crop in is wonderful. Particularly in sports when you want to get real close to the action to show the intensity but the action is unpredictable so you really need to shoot wider than the point of action in order to capture when they do unexpected moves.

  • @thebrandalorian8271
    @thebrandalorian8271 Před 2 lety +20

    Upgraded from the 6D Mark II to the R6. It removes so many little headaches from shooting on a DSLR. Adapting EF glass is seamless, like he said. When I phase out the R6 to being my second body, I’ll likely go with the R5 as a main (portrait shooter). Although the new R5c is looking like an interesting option.

    • @DanYosua
      @DanYosua Před 2 lety

      @@elipacker3932 On the photo side the biggest for me was stills rate and eye detect AF, on the video it was getting closer to a no-crop 4k. And love having the weather sealing for my personal shooting. I still use the RP with the 50 or 35 if I want to walk around with something small. I was shooting paid stuff on the side before getting it, and pulled the trigger as I tried a year of full time creative freelancing. Currently back to a job and side shooting. Imo, if you're "looking" for reasons, or wrestling to justify the cost, stay put and continue to mull it over. A big part of my decision was to make sure I had a backup for an increased number of shoots. If I never took a run at full time I probably would have gone with a lens and stayed with one body.

    I've been doing a lot of sports photography with the R6 and DSLR glass at the University of Maine. Until the price of RF glass comes down, I'll continue to do this. I'm constantly impressed by the quality of photos and videos I'm getting out of the R6. As much as I'd like to go to the R5, I also do a fair amount of shooting in gymnasiums and I've found it works very well in low light situations. If anyone has a spare R3 kicking around, I'm happy to trial that out for you, haha!

I have been using the R5 for almost a year, majorly on Waterphotography ( Lens EF 8-15mm, RF 16mm, RF 50 mm, RF 24-105mm and Samyang RF 14mm) using Aquatech Edge Housing, and the results are phenomenal! Also I have been using the R3 for surfing photography (Lens RF 800mm and Sigma EF 150-600mm) and the 30fps are killer, unreal the speed and the quality of the photos, I couldn't be more happy with this two setup. But the R3 is not a camera for everyone, I do miss the 45mp for some of the crop some time I need to do. As we say, first world problem.... any of this cameras you will be a happy chap.

    R6 is better overall, and you pay less for more. The only thing i miss from the 5D IV is the resolution sometimes, but its not a deal breaker since i'm not cropping, but those compressed CR3 saves much more space in the hard drives. So a resolution compromise for so many goodies is actually a pretty nice deal.

    As you say it depends, I got the R5 to replace my 5D4 because it’s a good all rounder for a hybrid shooter like me who doesn’t do sport but most other genres. While I have the usual suspects in RF glass the adapter lets me use a 16 year collection of L series glass without need for re-investing. In the real world for my kind of shooting I’ve never seen an overheating problem or the corner IBIS jitters with video and very (14mm) wide angle lens some people report. Finally on the subject of moving from video on a DSLR to Mirrorless what a joy the EVF is outside, I was totally turned off to these when a friend showed me their Fuji perhaps 12 years ago, things have improved unbelievably.

      @@BradRamanah i got the R6 after owning the 70D and then 90D previously.
      There is a noticeable bump in image quality despite the 90D already being excelent in that department. The biggest difference is the autofocus which you should take some time to actually learn because it can do some great things when mastered.
      The R5 is quite an expensive proposition and unless you need the 45MPs is not worth going for. Base video looks better on the R6 and if video IS your thing just get the R5C.

    #gotthisfar After a lot of thought I went for the R5. As a nature photographer, the ability to crop into my shots made the decision easy. It's an amazing piece of kit. I was worried about battery life but on some shoots I have had well over 1000 shots on one battery. No complaints there! I have only one gripe which is that the electronic shutter only shoots in 20fps. The fact that it's silent is great for nature but 20fps can fill the card and PC too fast. A 5fps option would be nice and surely an easy thing for Canon to do in firmware. Mind you, 20FPS is amazing!

    As always Great Job. I have the R5 for Bird photography and Wedding/Events. Having the larger sensor is great for the cropping you have to do with small Warblers and songbirds. All of the cameras are good but it is the lenses that keeps me with canon. RF-28-70 f2.0 is truly a great lens. It has character like some of the pricey glass from brand L.

    #gotthisfar. Great video Jared! I’ve watched and rewatched it several times. I switched to the Canon R6 from a Sony A7Rii. I liked the R6, but missed the cropping I could do with the 42MP 7Rii. I shot a little better of everything. The 7Rii literally went around the world with me in my first couple years of retirement. I got great shots and with 42MP could crop as much as I wanted. My problem, I couldn’t deny my friends shooting with Canon got way better color straight out of camera so, I picked up the R6, but missed being able to crop. I picked up the R5 and it’s been prefect for me. I shot a lot of sports from the stands, particularly tennis and have shots from the recent Miami Open shot with the R5 and RF 70-200mm f4, that are outstanding. For the crop factor, better color and amazing AF I’m sticking with the R5, although I admit to just upgrading to the RF 70-200mm f2.8.

    Jared , thanks a lot for a wonderful video. I have been a R5 user for well over an year and I have had wonderful experience with the AF system and the ability to customise the AF system. The results are fantastic. I have used the R5 up to 12,800 ISO and the noise control is too good. I mainly shoot wildlife and nature and mainly use the old EF glass (RF glass is still a little bit out of my budget) notably the 300 mm. F 2.8 version I and the 800 mm F 5.6. The AF speed is amazing and although I may not get the 12 FPS shooting speed when using the old EF glass in AF continuous mode, I am more than happy with the results that I have got of birds in flight and animals in action. I have had no regrets in purchase of my R5. Thanks once again Jared, looking forward to more videos from you on highlighting the capabilities of various cameras and lenses.

    #got this far. I'm shooting with two R5's with grips now, I would prefer the built in grip and battery of the R3 but I'm so happy with the performance of the R5 it's not worth the extra cost for me to buy the R3. When the R1 comes out and if it has a built in grip I may look at adding one but it will have to have something great for stills photography for me to spend the crazy amount it will probably cost.

    This was a great comparison. After watching this I know can say unequivocally that I still don't know which one I want to upgrade to! (Not the fault of this review). By the way, I know this is a nit, but at around 19:57-ish in the video, your graphic indicates that the R3 has a "Full HDMI Port" but earlier you stated that it has a Micro HDMI Port. I know it's just a typo but thought I'd mention it.

  • @DerWichtel
    @DerWichtel Před 2 lety +2

    Nice comparison. I totally agree with the R5 decision. As a former APS-C user with a canon M5, the R5 was the only viable option so far. I love using tele and also I have some EF-S lenses that automatically switch down to 1.6 Crop Mode, both resulting in less resolution for the area I want on the picture. So in both setups, the resolution I get compared with my previous camera would be 7.8MP for the R6, 10MP for the R3 and 17MP for the R5. The M5 makes the same image with 24MP. The drop to 17MP is ok, considering the rest of the camera is more powerful. But the drop for the R6 & R3 is a clear deal-breaker.

    #gotthisfar I just received my R6 last week. Upgraded from the R which I was very happy with. As someone that is a hobbyist and casual shooter it came down to $$. I just don’t get out enough with my camera to convince me I needed to spend more on the R5. With the extra I saved I can go after some new glass. Thanks Jared and Steven, I do enjoy your videos. Informative and entertaining! At some point Jared could you weigh in on all the smoke being generated about firmware 1.5? Is there an issue or perhaps it’s a case of over customization creating a conflict within the camera itself?

    Got my R6 on launch day back in 2020 and the overheating was a genuine nightmare. Firmware has definately helped but I still need to really think about what im going to be shooting when it comes to 4k video. When it comes to stills - Honestly incredible and I love it. My B Camera is a 6d mkii and the advances in autofocus almost make it impossible to go backwards when you have used the new R6.
