  • Hello Friends, recently I recorded some games music with a Creatie Labs Soundblaster Vibra that features Creative's own OPL3-clone called CQM. I recorded the same tunes with a Yamaha OPL3SAx soundcard as well, and this one features an integrated Yamaha YMF289 OPL3. So lets compare the tunes!
Let me know in the comments if you can accept CQM as a legit competitor or not. I reccomend using headphones to hear the slight differences. (At the Tyrian music, the hi-hats as an exmple)

I don't think I would ever notice during gameplay. They are so close that things like noise level, port selection, etc would be the deciding factor for me between a cqm and opl card.

Nice work. I you hadn't told me these were two different FM synths playing I swear I wouldn't have noticed anything suspicious in the titles. Also, I love the Amberstar addition, even though I personally find the Amiga version of the song much superior.

CQM is not bad, it is very good, however, there are OPL3 samples where differences are noticeable.

Good test music to show the differences are in Dune, and playing alloyrun.rad through reality adlib tracker.

Maybe I am deaf or stupid after all, but I can't hear any difference :)

I guess that's the conclusion - cqm is very very close.

I noticed a slight difference in Monkey Island. To me, the CQM sounded a bit more shrill if that makes sense. I think it was more noticeable than the others because a softer sound works better for emulating steel drums.

Why not both? Cqm seems to have better interpretation of some percussion you notice it clearly in gabriel knight. I bet you'd hear a lot of differences in wacky wheels and vinyl goddess from mars

I disagree with the general view that they are indiscernable. There is definitely a very obvious filtering difference between the two where the CQM comes off sounding way less natural, way more digitized. It is no deal breaker but CQM is still inferior to better clones such as ESFM and better variants such as Crystal FM.

Yes, the more harsh/sharp sounds on cqm is noticeable - I would put it below esfm but upfront crystal fm.

Crystal FM is one of the worst imho

In the 90s I had opl3 and got used to it, then I upgraded to awe64 and music often felt a bit off. In some cases cqm ruined music, like in Dune.
