I'm from kerala. I've wondered hearing the word "TRIGONOMETRY". At first, i thought that it of course must be Indian because it really corresponds to malayalam word "Trikonam", which means a triangle, further dividing "Tri" meaning three and "Konam" means edge,vertice. When i reached 10th grade, even my teachers are teaching that Trigonometry is derived from greek words "Trigon" and "Metron". Does anyone have any thoughts on it. I do know that ancient indian astronomers, mathematicians, philosophers etc have travelled to European and Arab countries in ancient times. Is Trigonometry also looted knowledge of our country?

Pranam! Rajiv ji....emphasised use of non translatable. Like 'Culture' to 'sanskriti'. Since culture only means dress, language, food etc. But the use of 'sanskriti' would add native stories of the land bhagwan, devtas, with dress, language, food. 'Culture' becomes subset of Sanskriti.

Intermittent fasting too, is nothing more than fancily packaged Jain concept of "Chauviyar" (finishing your meal before sunset) and "Navkarsi" (eating your first meal of the day 48 minutes after sunrise).

If you remember, in the eighties, Colgate was airing an advertisement describing the custom of cleaning teeth with charcoal as backward and harmful. Today they have variants with charcoal and salt. Namaste! I am so glad this is being recognized. I was very upset when I saw on Amazon, books and dvds labeled Christian yoga and the author at the same time demonized Hindu yoga. Even the widely used 'Namaste' they don't want to acknowledge as Hindu. They are also widely adopting Ayurdevic remedies but renaming and marketing. I also see a number of Indian inventions are accredited to European or Egyptian origin. I agree that anyone who does this is a thief and it it clear that they never understood the concept of karma. I am so grateful to you for this work - now I have a word I can use for this - U-turn.

It's called darna-parna. There are so many forms of fasting which are prescribed in Hinduism. There is also the Chandrayan way of fasting. You eat one spoonful of food on the new moon day, then keep adding one more spoonful each day to 15 on full moon day. Then you reduce one each day for the next 15 days.
All this knowledge unfortunately is lost to Indians in their pursuit to become "westernised"

And even Dr. Jason Fung, one of the main advocates of Intermittent Fasting, fails to credit it to India. He speaks a lot about Ramadan and Muslims fasting, a method which will not work for the medical benefits he proposes. One month of fasting will not work, but one day fasting or skipping meals work better because it is more manageable for acquiring medical benefits. Everyone gets credit, except Hindus.

I always wondered how Jung and William james got influenced by Indian thought as a Psychologist, how Nietzsche was influenced by Manusmriti and other ancient Indian texts. Our Indian languages (Sanskrit.Hindi. Marathi, Tamil or any) are needed for our spiritual growth. But English and highlighting the bias of Western scholars/Marxist scholars (in English) is the need of the hour. Sadly except for Rajiv Malhotra ji, no body is doing this.

I am optimistic that these thefts will be neutralized, I am a Guyanese Hindu, my forefathers having been brought to labour as indentured immigrants approximately two hundred years ago. I was at Cambridge about 60 years ago and the Indian/ Pakistani students at that time all suffered from an inferiority complex for the West; indeed, they all came from the ruling class. Rajiv jee thank you very much for bringing this. Very interesting thoughts on developing Indian theories. The idea of Gandinisim, Vivakanandaism, Arvindoesm is so good. If such theories/philosophies developed and brought into modern education, then many global problems will be solved. I am from Nepal, there are a couple sages from India gone to Nepal and stayed in the Himalaya throughout their life. Their teachings are so useful and give energy in our day to day life. For example, Sri Govinda Bharathi, known as Shivapuri Baba. His teaching on Right Living can be found in the book named Long Pilgrimage. My 15 years of experience in the USA tells me that the problem is in both sectors Westerners not recognizing or not crediting the Indian knowledge and Indians forgetting every jewel they inherited from their ancestors in the name of permanent residence. Another difficulty is the younger generation not digging out the knowledge by themselves from their own intuition and older generations are getting frustrated by saying "younger never learn". The things you are bringing are so great and wish you all the best expanding this thought further.

There are two reasons why "Indians" look up to all things western.one is when the East india Company was established the first people who learnt english, and British lifestyle projected themselves as superior and more cultured than the normal Indians. At the time impoverished Indians were not educated and there was no media, or any debate about the cultures. Second phase consisted of the second generation of Indians who were enamored by the original converts went to En ghb land for higher studies and read western authors and came back to India and wrote nonsense books and plays with Indian titles although they borrowed heavily from western authors. These ideas were sold as new wave literature, experimental movie etc. The third and the subsequent generations blindly followed and imitated these trend to create the mess we are in now. Indian governments since independence were not bothered to correct the course for self interest of politics.....

Sir, The U Turn Theory has opened my eyes to understand why the Westerns have flooded into Gurkuls in Odisha to learn Kalingan culture such as Odissi dance, music, art, craft, sculpture & Jagannath culture in detail. Then they rewrite in their own version. Now the question is : how to check such hijacks of Indian knowledge.
Neem(Azadirachta indica), Tulsi, (Oscimum sanctum), native of india, know the medicinal properties since time immemorial. Western countries tried for patenting them. After years of struggle it has been cancelled.
I understand your complaint. In the West it is called man's fallen nature. There are not so many high minded souls. Stealing is certainly part of that fallen nature. On the bright side good ideas and practices from India are enhancing the West. Hopefully there are things from the West which are benefiting India. Replacing Sanskrit words with English or French words may have a value so long as the Sanskrit are retained as the Sanskrit is powerful. Renaming meditation or dyana with an English word makes it more marketable if that is the goal. I am in favor of India getting credit for its creativity. It is the project of at least a century.

So so true,I have been living on and off in India for 12 years, I have a Guru that open my mind to all the Indian culture and knowledge such as the Vedas, meditation, spiritual practices, and being on a spiritual path, call Sadhana. Patanjali, and now when I see these new Self made western Guru vulgarising, Indian knowledge and making self help books, instant happiness, taking credit for it, doing no Sadhana and presenting Yoga as gymnastics or body building, just make me very sad. Some people that practice Asanas, yoga posture, don’t even know that yoga is a philosophy, a science, and a preventive médecine, just perceive it as a fitness. Anyway, when I have a chance I take the time to remind the westerners that all this spiritual knowledge comes from India. Om Shanti🙏🙏 I love my India, my soul connection.
