Fungal Morphology: The Parts of a Mushroom

- So although we will be looking at a wide variety of fungi in this series, most of you are here to learn about mushrooms, as they are the most interesting members of the fungi kingdom. So let's learn about the structure of a mushroom. What are its features? What do they do? How do they differ from one species to another? Let's learn about the morphology of a mushroom now.
Script by William Marcus
Much of the mushroom photography was provided by Stephen Axford of Planet Fungi. For more dazzling footage check out Stephen's fungi safari in the forests of the Himalayas documenting over 200 species of mushrooms! I'm serious, it's incredible, go watch the trailer: www.planetfungi.movie/

I never thought I would enjoy learning about mushrooms so much
thats cuz they're rad as hell
A joke:
What did the Italian mushroom say to his wife?
Hai face!
Explanation for the Joke:
“Hai” in Italian means “You have a beautiful (followed by the feature you’re complimenting)”. “Hai face” sounds like “hyphae”; hyphae are, to simplify the term, fungal filaments or fibers.
What did you think about my joke?
Yes me2. Accidentally fell into a rabbit hole. Wanted to draw a mushroom so I needed reference. Came across a docu. And another one. Still haven't finished the drawing but I did finish 3 docus
one of my favorite channels. The sheer amount of interesting information that is being distilled and presented in each of these is staggering, great work Dave.
*I like your funny words magic man*
Just developed a special interest in fungi and mushrooms specifically and your videos Spark a lot of joy, thank you for making them
Oh man... mycology is a science I wanted to learn about since I was a kid. I'm going to love this series - hope you keep at it!
I've been trying to study mycology, which is hard since there are no classes where I live, and this videos have really helped.

Thank you, sir.

Very impressed by the script! Better than any textbook or other mycology resource I've been able to find. Excited for this series.
There's so much free food in the woods in the form of mushrooms! This autumn was great for collecting them=)
thank you!! it has been very interesting so far. can't wait to see the next video on the series!
Loved the photos of the mushrooms. Truly brilliant colors and fascinating shapes. I would guess I've seen no less than a dozen different types of mushrooms just in my front yard.
So, Professor Dave, as I am very new to botany, which would you say is more difficult: Identifying edible from poisonous mushrooms, or identifying edible from poisonous berries?
Thanks, and I'm looking forward to future installments of this series!
I'd say that berries are easier, theres more to look for
I dont have much experience with mycology though so take my opinion with a grain of salt
Wow www amazing photos of these colorful magical mushrooms 🍄!!!!
Thanks! I have always been interested in this topic.
Mushrooms are just fascinating. I always meant to learn more about them, and this is the perfect opportunity.

I'm barely getting into mycology since the last week so I really thank you for your videos you are an amazing person my dude👍🏻🔥
This is really very usefulllll video,I have read about fungi, but sir u took me through the depths of this kingdom 👍
Oh yeah, I'm loving this series.
Thank you so much @professor Dave.

just by looking at those mushrooms my eyes are melting, they are more beautiful than plants or trees

Awesome!
Please keep these coming! The hubs & I love them! Although at our age we have to watch 3-4 times to get everything! No worries! You're very entertaining! Our 10 year old watches the first time & gets everything you say! He finds them in the yard & we id them. It really boosts his self-confidence & for that there are no words I can say except THANK YOU! It is so difficult to build confidence right now in kids & this Mycology series has changed my Virtual school, Safer at Home since March, son's life! His whole outlook has changed with 2 videos. We did get him an age appropriate field guide (10 almost 11 y.o.) & an age appropriate book of Mycology. That hasn't arrived 🤦♀️ However, he loves the field guide & we live on a delta with more rain than you can fathom. And we leave our backyard natural. So he loves finding new mushrooms every day! And I got him a field journal for observations & thoughts. He's in 4th grade, so the field journal is adorable! He is an excellent artist for his age, so that is actually really neat to see as well.
Ok. I'll quit rambling about how wonderful your videos have been for my little family! But thank you! God bless you! And we can't wait for the next one!🤗❤
Wow fantastic, thanks for the kind words! This is only #2 of what will be close to 20 in the playlist so stay tuned for lots more! And definitely check out other similar playlists like botany and biology!

Excellent introduction to a method for identifying mushroom species. So many popular books have crappy photos or idealised pictures with disclaimers that they look like poisonous varieties.

The structure that you normally see above the ground is the part of the mushroom that is producing and dispersing spores. Each spore is a single cell that is capable of sending out a hypha that will develop into a group and form its own mycelium.👍

So, Professor, I heard you were going to debunk "quantum mysticism". I'm very interested in this, so I hope you're having fun.
5:05 - This isn't Amanita phalloides, this is Amanita citrina, the so called false death cap. Its cap is pale yellow, sometimes white. All other parts, stem, ring, volva, are white, like the death angel (so your sentence at 4:46 "A mushroom with these characteristics can only be one thing: the death angel, amanita bisporigera" is also incorrect, s such a mushroom can certainly be amanita citrina, too). Amanita citrina is distinguishable by its dirty-looking warts (not always present) and its smell of rotting potatoes. If cooked, it is not toxic, but it tastes awful and shouldn't be eaten due to its similarities with death cap and death angel.
Im so happy someone pointed this fact. Thank you.
Miss you
Professor Dave, have you thought about adding an Ecology course to your life science subjects?
Yes gotta do zoology first and then ecology is after that!
@@ProfessorDaveExplains very much looking forward to those!
If you were stuck in the wild, what mushrooms would be considered edible and how do you identify edible mushrooms?
That'll be covered later in this series!
There is no way to confidently differentiate an edible mushroom from a poisonous mushroom from a single trait. Generally, mushroom foragers will memorize a specific species by learning the specific traits of that species. There are about 20 commonly known edible species, but the true number is far larger. There are about 5-10 poisonous species to look out for. So, if you stay on with the series and learn a bit more mycology, you'll be able to differentiate between species and easily determine if what you find is edible!
Mushrooms are so fascinating in medical way.

Question: Who came up with the classification name endings such as (-mycota -mycotina)?

If those puffballs' hymenium isn't exposed to air and inside the fruiting body, then, how do they spread their spores?
brb about to go outside and make a spore print hehe
The mushrooms in 5:06 is NOT Amanita phalloides!!! It is Amanita citrina, which isn't poisonous. That's classical mistake in this type videos.
The gills are one of the main reasons why i never wanna eat a mushroom, it looks and feels too squishy and gross.
Also now i wanna learn more about mushrooms
They literally have dirt on them and potentially get shit/pissed on by animals, and the texture is the part you find gross?

Stupid question, but how is anatomy different from morphology please?
Morphology is specifically about form/shape, as opposed to aspects of anatomy like internal structure, organization of organ systems, etc.

I really like this series, just an OCD remark, I believe commonly it is called "Destroying Angel" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanita_bisporigera , I have not heard "Death Angel" but could be a regional thing.
