Hey, I made this scenery, and I'm so glad you're getting to fly this! :) There was no Porter in the game at the time I built this a couple of years back, but I'm glad to see it's now being put to proper use. The "Secret War" has been a long-time passion of mine, and I have a project on the back-burner to recreate more airfields in Laos as well as Vietnam and Cambodia. Work has been getting in the way, but hopefully someday I will get around to it.
This video led me to your scenery and I love it. I too have a passion for the "secret war" and if I had time I'd help you do up some more scenery for Laos (VLVT, VLLB, and lots more LS) and the neighboring Thai airfields, mainly Udon. How can I help (besides doing scenery because I'm full-time on a major payware project)?

I will send you a private message, and hopefully we can connect! As far as help - besides the lack of time, my main difficulties are limited knowledge of the SDK (I am probably doing some things very inefficiently there), and object libraries. I don't have any experience creating 3D objects, which is why I've been relying purely on default MSFS libraries. Otherwise, I have good research materials, and have been working on creating basic airfields (runways and terrain polys only) for Lima Sites and airfields in Vietnam. I'm hoping to get at least some of those out this year.

The alarm you got on touchdown is because of the elevator trim is out of the green band. From what I understand totally normal for the porter as it loves lots of nose up trim on approach. BBS lists 3 units of nose up for landing, but for takeoff, max is 2. So the alarm is a reminder to reset elevator trim. Thanks for flying the porter! I love this airframe!
I’m reading a book on FACs in Laos right now so it’s fascinating to see the scenery in glorious HD! I need to get the Porter. Also awesome to hear the Quiet One 500P get a shout out!
Rudder trim should be a before takeoff checklist item on all aircraft. I was a pilot on an aircraft and while setting at the gate loading passengers a young boy wanted to see the cockpit. While showing him all the lights and switches, the rudder trim knob was right in front of him and he was turning it without my knowledge. I found out about it during takeoff roll and vowed never to let that happen to me again. Thanks for your videos.
Yeah, it is a check item, and I did, I just forgot which direction to set it, the porter needs about 50% right trim on takeoff to counter the torque, i did left XD made it spicy. It's been a minute since I flew here with anger.
@@mixedpickles9201 It was an old 727. It had the rudder knob between the pilots and back out of sight. But it was very big for a little boys fingers to play with.
@@AvAngel it would be nice if we could see the amount of rudder trim on the screen. I think there is a way to put that up on the screen from msfs Developer's mode. I'd like to have a axis list up there on the screen for not only rudder trim but for elevator trim (although I realize that the external cockpit view has elevator showing) Rudder trim is so hard to see while in flight. or doesn't show at all in most planes
I'd honestly hate to fly with a visible HUD up on screen, sorry >> The trim indicators on the panel show the amount of trim for rudder, aeleron and elevator, you can see green arcs for the takeoff trim on rudder.
Coming in high and fast is an excellent excuse to fly over the airfield to check for obstructions and wind sack and then return with a more carefully planned approach.

Hmm, is one meant to taxi the Porter on high idle? I always stick her on low idle during taxi and occasionally even pull the rpm lever back a bit to keep the speed controllable. She'll do it herself, too, no need to use the throttle.
The flight never happened means I never saw the video? Oh well, still a thumbs up Aa! That green shelf in the cockpit, why dont they put a hole in it for a travel coffee mug? Id change that yellow warning tape up top, it would say "Warning: Insert coffee tumbler into hole before takeoff!"

I got to see one in real life at the RAAF Amberly Aviation Heritage Center in Queensland Australia that was flown in Papau New Guinea and Vanauatu. Hopefully one day I will be able to be a passenger on one.
Thanks for another excellent adventure! This one really makes me want to indulge my Air America fantasies. In addition to the Porter we also have the C-47 and the Beech 18 available in MSFS. Like you I'm looking for more airplanes ... C-123 and C-46 high among them. And more 1960s Laos scenery!

Fun video as always. At 2:30, right as you're saying "engine's looking good" there is a control label that says "Telephone". Is this just a bad translation for "Radio" or is there something else attached to it?
And on a non-aviation topic, water cooling your PC will not change your room temperature at all. Unless you have long enough water lines to mount the radiator in another room.
I just bought the Kodiak on sale and was wondering if I should've got this instead. You make it look like a lot of fun. Tbf I'm happy with the Kodiak though.
i always noticed this plane goes so fast on idle in the air when we try to slow down for landing. Almost as if theres no drag. Really have to force it to slow down before final.

I know you don't spend a whole lot of time reading manuals but that "chip' warning light is kind of important. OTOH it will make for a very entertaining video if you ignore it :) Then again ... "Let's reset our trim for takeoff" [moves trim AWAY from the green takeoff marking] ... could be entertaining anyway :)
You’ll notice I set it left both times for takeoff as I knew I had to set it, just the wrong way, not that I don’t read, just you try remembering 20 plus manuals

Well, close, but Air America had Porters with Garrett engines, Continental Air Service had the PT-6’s.

The Kodiak is definitely the better plane. I have got both :) but the Porter is really good too.
If anyone is interested, read The Ravens by Christopher Robbins about the FAC's in the secret war. One of many good books.
