its sad on what happened to the people of Tristram. i also love when you see the butchers room and open it and hear this ahh fresh meat it scared me when i was a kid
Psycho Flash While I do very much prefer Diablo 1, I will admit that a lot of nostalgia is involved. People who started with Diablo 2 or 3 will usually find it rather hard to embrace Diablo 1 because the gameplay mechanics have improved so much over time. I would love to see a good remake and prequel made that successfully conveys the same gothic atmosphere as the original.
That feeling of playing diablo 2 the first time, and going to tristram only to see corpses and bones of NPC's that defined your childhood gaming experience
That's part of what added the athmosfere. The fact that you knew you couldn't outrun most of your enemies (and especially not the Butcher) makes it so you are extra careful on finding and engaging enemies. Athmospheric horror is not the same if you don't actually feel endangered. D2 was a step back in THIS aspect because of high speed movement, potion spam and respawning when you died (except for Hardcore ofc).
Diablo 1 , together with Hexen: Beyond heretic, is probably the best representation of "hellish" atmosphere in gaming to date...while there are other good representations of infernal themes they are always more on the "gore" "comedic" "exagerate" side of things. Onlyl the two aforementioned titles really managed to deliver what an actual invasion of creatures from hell would possibly feel like; that haunting feel that seems to stagnate on the walls of the catacombs, the atmospheric music, the stench of every texture..worked really so perfectly. In the end it was not the oversimplified nature, the (at launch) real money marketplace, or the constant internet connection that made me not like Diablo 3 nearly as much; it was the atmosphere. I still play Diablo 2 occasionally, definitely more then Diablo 1, but that is only because of the multiplayer and for the efficiency of it's gameplay, because otherwise Diablo 1 reigns supreme to me, because i value immersion and atmosphere above everything else..even gameplay at times.
Fuck the new silly Blizzard designs. They ruined Diablo and Warcraft with that. Diablo 1 still has the best design of world and sounds. While I also liked Diablo 2 and the improved gameplay the gore was worse then in Diablo 1. Killing goat men and zombies is much more fun with the splatter. And enemies like the Hidden where the heads splat into their blood puddle. Wish there would be a Diablo 2 mod with Diablo 1 gore.
D1 and D2 are better then D3 period. In Diablo 2 for example at the end when fighting Baal my hand was sweathy beacuse I had to be carefull and always look at my health bar , wich made Diablo 2 in a way , harder then Diablo 3. Thats just an example of a mechanic in D2 that made it hard and also awesome. Yue feel that feeling of fear before you enter and fight a boss.
1 2 > 3 D3 failed to live up the expectations, poor storyline and complicated graphics. No PK leads to no new continuity to find new items after beating the boss. D2 has great story line and people will continue to farm items 5,10,20 yrs after its release for godly PK. D1 is nostalgic and great story line.
Some people don't seem to realise that D2 was a big departure from D1 as well and people were up in arms about it when it was released (ring any bells) but quickly got over it when they realised D2 was one of the best games ever made.
I love the lighting and art style of Diablo 1 and 2. As other people have said Diablo 3 is too cartoony for me. They borrowed to much equipment from their wow team :/ not that I blame them.
so you're saying d2 had their initial quests patched in? I'm not talking about game balances and bug fixes here people. i'm talking strictly play through and replay value. build diversity is not going to change with patches either. and for everyone saying they can reach end game in d2, try it without being rushed.
Yeah i agree with you I have no clue why choii boiy is getting thumbs up for such a odd statement but for many and including myself the issue is the Core Game elements such as -Music -Story -Character building and overall general "feel" of the game and these elements will not change no matter what expansions get introduced.
To everyone complaining about Diablo 3 not being as good as Diablo 1 or 2: I have excellent news for you. Your "dream games" have already been released. Go play them. And stop bitching about this awesome game! Thank you.
I would want something like that but for the entire game, I mean, 3 independent screens where the player just normally clean the game to Diablo, to compare game length, act lengths etc.
I get what your point is, but actually I don't recall anyone being up in arms about D2. Every site I visited and all my clan in SC1 were just absolutely hyped about the game, especially after seeing tyreal concepts. However it was a completely different generation back then, there was no real sense of entitlement and the developers were very much in tune with what the fans wanted. It was different, but they added so much more ontop of D1 that it was impossible to be anything but excited.
Yes, the cartoon graphics are so inappropriate. Diablo universe is dark fantasy with gothic elements. Blizzard are fools if they considers kids don`t like mature games. When I played Diablo 1 (my first game) I was a kid and I was hooked very much. Why some idiot menager from Blizzard decides kids like graphics "for kids".
Diablo 1 still rules with it's athmosphere, ambiance, story and it's music. D3 looks nice but it doesn't feel like diablo. It has elements of diablo 1 and that's it.... And characters in D1 :D Love going to Griswold and Decard Kain. Every character was special in it's way :)
You nailed it, "Too many amateur design decisions for a world-leading company." Even worse--too many emanating from a single person so mentally compromised that you have to wonder if anyone else was (and is) really home. Makes me feel good about picking up another title from them.
Replayed the video and what actually happens is that the uploader goes to Adria's hut by the top bridge (which in D3 is inacessible directly due to fallen tree trunk and departs via the south bridge into Town again. The correct path to mimic D3 would be to enter Adria's "island" by the south bridge and leave twards the Cathedral by the north one without returning to Town.
This is awesome. Blizzard needs to have more rewarding experiences like this one. Sort of like how the tv show Community rewards the viewer who pays CLOSE CLOSE attention to detail!!!
@RMJ1984 Game looks sick while you're playing it. In truth people find too many reasons to complain about why this game isn't Diablo 1 or Diablo 2, but the gameplay does feel exactly like what most of us would want the next Diablo to feel like. Very fluid and action-packed.
Still playing a game does not exempt you from nostalgia. I still play Mario 3 and all the way through I have to admit I am always blinded by nostalgia, because I tie that game so strongly to many fond memories. I do not know how I would feel about that game if I played it for the first time at this age (would probably still like it)
Probably the thing that disappointed me most in Diablo 3. I was so excited in 2 when I not only got to return to Tristram, but that it had the old favorite music
Really cool to see how it's changed, never played D1. I got D2 a couple years back, haven't really played it, actually re-downloading it right now, and of course I've played D3, which D3 has actually improved since I last played it.
Diablo 1: Grass is green, dirt is brown, air is clear. Diablo 2: Grass is green, dirt is brown, air is clear. Diablo 3: Grass is yellow-blue, dirt is blue, air is blue
Although I was disappointed with the beta. I think the PvP portion of D3 is going to be epic. I don't think the skeleton king is even the last boss for act 1. All of our memories of first walking into Diablo's lair or the Sanctuary are going to be renewed. It's going to be a great game.
I wouldn't say a complete failure, I liked it, it is fun and it has good things. It doesn't live to the expectations of the series though. Hopefully with good enough patches and the expansions can reach that level of awesomeness
Well, 2 or 3 builds per class as I said :) CMWW can tank way better than barbarians on D3 too. Locked items or not, D3 has the "ultimate stuff" tier to reach, for each build and each character, you have the perfect item for each slot ... Locked or not doesnt matter. My point is just that D3 became drastically better recently , and that I'm sure that the expansion is going to make it almost as good as D2 + LoD. And I'm having great fun in Hardcore with my friends ! Cheers
@RMJ1984 A lot of people have mentioned this, and while it IS true that there's a lot of fog around, the game doesn't feel unclear or blurry by any means! I think it's a technicality that happens in the video-compression together with the extreme contrast to the first Diablo games and their extremely clear cut graphics. The colors and feel of the environments change a lot depending on where you are, and I still think the game feels very dark. But the graphics have indeed changed!
I do not really mind the aesthetic changes made in d3 but I absolutely hate that they replaced the OG tristram theme ! It's like if you had scrapped the "He's a pirate" theme from the pirates of the caribbean saga, it doesn't make any sense !
RMAH messed things up, design of the way skills worked was pasteurized in D3, everything was dependent on your weapon and gear. D2 you could specialize your guy to be good even in bad gear (with the right synergy's in your build). Also spell damage went up as you leveled the spell in d2, d3 all about the weapon you bought on the RMAH.
I think he meant the atmosphere is more fitting in D1, not more saturated. D3 has plenty of atmospheric saturation; so much that is gets in the way of the horror.
@ 4:35 Yep when you go into level 5, from dungeons to catacombs that door opens right through from town to level 5. Same happens when you get into level 9 and 13.
If I were getting rushed I'd be able to get to end game in Diablo II, same as in Diablo III... Diablo II only has one more act, and that was AFTER an expansion. Most of the things people love about Diablo II were post-expansion. Not saying that Diablo II isn't the better one, but comparing them is like comparing a well established band to a band who just released their first album.
His first sentence is right though, when it takes someone 3 days to beat the game. Then there is gonna be a lack of some replay value. However as far as the acts and all, got to wait on expansion like you said.
I always liked D1 better than D2, no matter how much I played it no matter how different or objectively better D2 was. I understand that you want something different than what D3 is, but that doesn't make it a bad game, it's good, maybe it doesn't live up to the expectations, but that doesn't make it bad.
I just noticed a major continuity error in Diablo 3. The cathedral was burned to the ground in D2, so why is it still standing in D3? Did they rebuild it or did Blizzard just forget?
nothing forces you to use the AH. You can meet numerous farming people in the LFG channel or the Trade channel. So there nothing there you need to spoend 300-400 bucks for. D3 has improved pretty much everything the previous games had to offer.
that might be their problem, they shouldn't have taken out the atmosphere that made the series as good as it was, if they really wanted something more like torchlight, the game shouldn't have been called diablo3 in the first place
They tried something different. This isn't a bad thing. One of the main problems people had with Starcraft II is that it plays TOO much like the original Starcraft. They could have basically remade Diablo II with a new story and engine and people would have liked that. But they've chosen to do something different. And seriously, one year on it's not a terrible game. They've made a lot of improvements, added more endgame (Just got my first Hellfire ring the other day :D), and are still doing more
If you are talking about inneficient builds, then Diablo 3 is exactly the same. You have plenty of builds that aren't as efficient as the best one. But with recent patches, different spells have been buffed / updated in order to make some other builds viable. Blizzard / Archon / CMWW Wizards for example. Did you play D3 recently ?
At the end, I was really hoping that the D3 Barbarian would also say "The sanctity of this place has been fouled".
its sad on what happened to the people of Tristram. i also love when you see the butchers room and open it and hear this ahh fresh meat it scared me when i was a kid
Diablo 1 owns Diablo III. It's not nostalgia. Its because ir feels more organic, natural, less Hollywood and more spiritual?
It's pure nostalgia. There is no way in hell that game feels organic. Just look at the way your char walks.
Psycho Flash your comments are hilarious as how bieber's fanbase wave to him.
Psycho Flash
Is a dumb ass lol
BrecMadak and +WhiteMt Forsale interesting how anyone who refutes my point doesn't know how to write properly. This just made my argument better.
Ah, man. The opening music sent chills down my spine. So much nostalgia.
Liked! Very well done mate.
Makes me sad to see how great the music from D1 was compared to D3...
Diablo 1 , together with Hexen: Beyond heretic, is probably the best representation of "hellish" atmosphere in gaming to date...while there are other good representations of infernal themes they are always more on the "gore" "comedic" "exagerate" side of things.

Ah, the emotions of hearing
the music when entering the dungeon, for the first time, in Diablo 1 ... good old memories.
D1 needs an HD remake. I love that game's sandbox roguelike elements.
Well done! It's interesting how much of the town area D2 cut out but D3 referenced again.
Yue feel that feeling of fear before you enter and fight a boss.
Well done on the comparison!
- It's sad to see that "Diablo" has gone completely Disney...
Why does D3 have a white washed out look over it compared to the other 2?
Because Jay Wilson.
1 2 > 3
D3 failed to live up the expectations, poor storyline and complicated graphics. No PK leads to no new continuity to find new items after beating the boss.
D2 has great story line and people will continue to farm items 5,10,20 yrs after its release for godly PK.
D1 is nostalgic and great story line.
DIABLO 2 HD REMAKE, PLEASE!
Oh yeah. Good video
you could install multires mod for 1.12 version of D2 LOD
Igorek bitw
who would give a fuck playing 1.12 while there is 1.13 already for several years with major updates anyway.
We got it!
Your wish granted
Being a soundtrack composer, I have always appreciated this music.
Some people don't seem to realise that D2 was a big departure from D1 as well and people were up in arms about it when it was released (ring any bells) but quickly got over it when they realised D2 was one of the best games ever made.
having not played D1 or D2 until about 6 months ago, the D3 demo is far more atmospheric than either of the previous ones.
You are correct by saying "This will open up as 'Catacombs' in Diablo 1".
You unlock that entrance when you're at "dungeon level 5".
This comparison had me thinking D2 was the best... but I wanted more of the Tristram map in it. 😭
I love the lighting and art style of Diablo 1 and 2. As other people have said Diablo 3 is too cartoony for me. They borrowed to much equipment from their wow team :/ not that I blame them.
I always wonder why such a small village of like 5 houses had a giant cathedral. Didn't make sense...
so you're saying d2 had their initial quests patched in?
I'm not talking about game balances and bug fixes here people. i'm talking strictly play through and replay value. build diversity is not going to change with patches either.
and for everyone saying they can reach end game in d2, try it without being rushed.

I always wished they had mapped the whole Tristram area in Diablo 2.
Especially now that I am playing it again in Resurrected.
Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 > Diablo 3
+Ultra Jaxn agree, also diablo 2 was one of first games i played (still playing lol)
Wow what a bold statement
Diablo 3 just sucks plain and simple. The maps are too small and squished in the view blows ass..
Music isnt loud enough.. D2 D1 > d3 by far.
The different route to the Cathedral is caused by the fallen trees and junk blocking the old way. At 3:11 you can see the old route on the minimap.

The crypt is actually not a shortcut to the lower cathedral levels, but separate dungeon in the "Hellfire" expansion.
Replayed the video and what actually happens is that the uploader goes to Adria's hut by the top bridge (which in D3 is inacessible directly due to fallen tree trunk and departs via the south bridge into Town again.

Great video. I'm impressed they did so good making it look about the same but at the same time different in a good way.
The crypt does lead to the Catacombs once you reach the point in the Catacombs where you can go back up to Tristram.
DIABLO 1 > DIABLO 2 > DIABLO 3.
@RMJ1984 Game looks sick while you're playing it. In truth people find too many reasons to complain about why this game isn't Diablo 1 or Diablo 2, but the gameplay does feel exactly like what most of us would want the next Diablo to feel like. Very fluid and action-packed.
@Spoisen I sure hope youre right, i dont think i could stand actully playing a game as blurry as it looks in this video even on 1080p
Still playing a game does not exempt you from nostalgia. I still play Mario 3 and all the way through I have to admit I am always blinded by nostalgia, because I tie that game so strongly to many fond memories. I do not know how I would feel about that game if I played it for the first time at this age (would probably still like it)
Also, from memory I believe there is an alternate bridge to the north of Adria's hut in D1 as well.
Probably the thing that disappointed me most in Diablo 3. I was so excited in 2 when I not only got to return to Tristram, but that it had the old favorite music
I love Farnham. "You.. drink.. water?"
Really cool to see how it's changed, never played D1. I got D2 a couple years back, haven't really played it, actually re-downloading it right now, and of course I've played D3, which D3 has actually improved since I last played it.

I played D1,D2 and D3 beta
Personally even though i preferred D1,D2's art style i still think D3 is beautiful in its own way even if it looks like WoW
either a character or a follower says it, i believe its the templar. dont remember which 1 but i remember hearing it.
Well, 2 or 3 builds per class as I said :) CMWW can tank way better than barbarians on D3 too.

People with the hating mindset will say anything to put d3 down... Obviously d3 has the best graphics, people can't face the facts.
@RMJ1984
A lot of people have mentioned this, and while it IS true that there's a lot of fog around, the game doesn't feel unclear or blurry by any means! I think it's a technicality that happens in the video-compression together with the extreme contrast to the first Diablo games and their extremely clear cut graphics. The colors and feel of the environments change a lot depending on where you are, and I still think the game feels very dark. But the graphics have indeed changed!
Nice presentation. I will miss those one liners, like when u enter the cathedral for the first time in D1.
I do not really mind the aesthetic changes made in d3 but I absolutely hate that they replaced the OG tristram theme ! It's like if you had scrapped the "He's a pirate" theme from the pirates of the caribbean saga, it doesn't make any sense !

Me and my brother would always play D1 on ps1 as well... I still enjoyed D2 a bit more. We all have our opinions though.
I think he meant the atmosphere is more fitting in D1, not more saturated. D3 has plenty of atmospheric saturation; so much that is gets in the way of the horror.
i love diablo 1. i love diablo 2, and i am fast falling in love with diablo 3. why so much hate?
@ 4:35 Yep when you go into level 5, from dungeons to catacombs that door opens right through from town to level 5. Same happens when you get into level 9 and 13.
very well done, this must have taken a while to edit.
you should find it in sacred too , there is an area that is CLEARLY a tristram reference
This was absolutely incredible.
However, I was a little surprised you didn't include the Diablo II Cathedral comparison of the immediate interior.
I wish they had a quote upon entering the cathedral like diablo 1.
4:10 And where is the cemetery? Where are the tombstones? Demons coming out of the cathedral on Tristram and destroying him?
It's actually from an older orchestra re-recording of blizzard soundtracks called: Echoes of War by the Eminence Symphony Orchestra
"The smell of death surrounds me."
His first sentence is right though, when it takes someone 3 days to beat the game. Then there is gonna be a lack of some replay value. However as far as the acts and all, got to wait on expansion like you said.
My subjective opinion is that the atmosphere has become progressively less submerging through the games
Thanks for the video. Was nice to see the side by side comparison.
In D2 Tristram, the unique Shamans can resurrect normal ones!!!
Usually Shamans cannot resurrect each other, except for the unique Shaman
I always liked D1 better than D2, no matter how much I played it no matter how different or objectively better D2 was. I understand that you want something different than what D3 is, but that doesn't make it a bad game, it's good, maybe it doesn't live up to the expectations, but that doesn't make it bad.
I think only some areas have the fog. But the screwed up part is the change from the gauntlet to the stupid pointer....
D3 barbarian seems to be running is low gravity, shame the D2 only showed the barbarian walking. The slow leg movement in D3 seems a bit odd.
I just noticed a major continuity error in Diablo 3. The cathedral was burned to the ground in D2, so why is it still standing in D3? Did they rebuild it or did Blizzard just forget?
instant like.............. proud that i grow up with that game.
nothing forces you to use the AH. You can meet numerous farming people in the LFG channel or the Trade channel. So there nothing there you need to spoend 300-400 bucks for. D3 has improved pretty much everything the previous games had to offer.
there is no way to surpass the atmosphere and immersion in diablo 1
Excellent video and honestly nothing short of spectacular fully enjoyed it!
that might be their problem, they shouldn't have taken out the atmosphere that made the series as good as it was, if they really wanted something more like torchlight, the game shouldn't have been called diablo3 in the first place
They've made a lot of improvements, added more endgame (Just got my first Hellfire ring the other day :D), and are still doing more
yeah at this point after we all played the whole game for w while since its out long enough we can all agree on this....?
D1 had the ambiance, D2 has the gameplay and content, D3 had.. connection errors?
Wow Thats actually pretty cool.
Didnt think how good they did on this...
Maybe we will run into the old Rouge Encampment in D3
Yeah they did. Look a a picture of the entire map in D2. Its in the location its supposed to be, just burned down.
Not only that he's talking about synergies I assume, which was added YEARS after LoD even...
It's a shortcut to the Catacombs in D1 which consist of floors 5-8.
2013 and still play torchlight 2 with tristram theme :)
I never new they can make Diablo III look like Conker's Bad Fur Day Reloaded
=/ that's just because the graphics style has changed. Also take into account that in D3 it has been corrupted beyond the point of repair.
I guess they got it closer than I thought. It's so hard to recognize with it being destroyed, I guess.
What they meant was that Blizzard couldn't fix D3 because, D3 was already broken.
D3 has 90 min of Matt Uelmen (D1/D2 composer) playing the acoustic guitar. Wait for the full game before assuming stuff?
We have a petition going for an HD remake of Diablo II, check it out! We have a link in our Channel description and on our website.
