The conflict in Sudan is part of a larger pattern of civil wars, coups and general instability inside the African continent. On April 15th 2023 the Rapid Support Forces launched a campaign against the Sudanese Armed Forces. The ripple effect of this will be felt by all of us. This war will effect not only the people of Sudan but also the wider world. This is in part because Sudan has two key geographic features that put them in a strategically important role. The first is they’re located right on the Red Sea which is where about 10% of global trade passes through thanks to the Suez Canal. The second is Sudan is home to where the white and blue Nile rivers merge into the main Nile river. Sudan has 60% of the Nile Basin in their territory. The big takeaway here is they are upstream from Egypt who depend on the security and safe management of this water resource.

This is because more than half of Africa’s 54 different nations are estimated to double by 2050 thanks in part to fast improving mortality rates. I think this combined with the fact that 60% of the world's arable land is located here means Africa is poised to become an important geopolitical player in the future. It appears like this pattern of conflict that we’re witnessing might be growing pains. The people of these nations are fighting to determine the direction of their future, fighting to have a say in who they partner with and which faction controls their valuable natural resources.

The U.S. and Russia are deliberately pursuing separate policies to drive up grain prices in Sub-Saharan Africa. Russia's war in Ukraine is obvious. America's cutting agricultural output (to prevent global warming) is at least as damaging to the region.
I don't know why the U.S. wants Sub-Saharan Africa in civil disorder, but we do. And we are working hard to make it happen.

I've often wondered how Chris gets such thorough information. I guess a lot of it comes from the internet. It's amazing how much power the internet puts into peoples' hands. I also think that because of his background Chris has connections that put the right spin on things.
It's a literal mouthpiece of the state department. It's a fine enough channel, but know you are getting approved state department talking points, and that is all.

The war in Ukraine has really sucked all the air out of the room in this regard. Lot of evidence Armenia and Azerbaijan will be at war again soon, coups in Mali and Gabon, India and China saber rattling, and no one is noticing any of that either.

So I am a Sudanese who still living in omdurman (one of the 3 cities that the capital is consist of, which is located west to the Nile River) even during the frighting, I am very thankful for God that they didn't distroy the communication infustrucure so I can comment in this video 😂.
Update from the ground : as stated in the video the RSF used to hold control over the majority of the capital important strategic area like the ministery of defense building were the head of the army used to be at. But as of today the 2nd of September 2023 the national army hold a the upper hand by controlling majority of the city of omdurman except of some areas in the south of the city.
While the conflict is still heating in the city of Khartoum but the army is still hold the upper hand and pushing the RSF to the south and the eastern borders of the city.
In the other hand in the city of bahary the information is unclear cuz the battle is developing fast in one day the RSF may hold a position the other day the army is controlling that area.
But in conclusion the reason why the army hasn't won the battle yet is becouse the RSF hide in civilians homes that are abandoned or the force their owners to leave, and becouse of that the army can't use air strike and heavier weapons cuz it may heart civilians.
And here another info, most of the people in the country if not all support the national army, cuz obviously you can't trust a militia to hold power of the a country knowing that the people who hold a commanding position of the RSF are all of Mohamad Hamdan dagalo relatives, so it's a milita that is controlled by one family.

Will they keep control for their own gains, keep control because there is no one to actually take over, or is there a potential civilian government ready to step up?

To be honest I think the majority of people will be of a support of the military to take control of the country for at least the next 5 years; the reason for is to enforce stability and also because most of the political personals and parties were aiding the milita against the national army so they can have control over the country, cuz they know that if an election took place they will not won it.
And the civilian and general public hate those politicians who are in a united body called ( the force of freedom and change) they are essentially a many small and medium size parties who didn't get the chance to get in a position of power in the last Omer Al basher regime, the general public become aware that they only want power and not improving the life of people.
So what I see most likely happenings is that the military taking control with the support of the people ( cuz what majority of the Sudanese people want right now is stability and security, which the people are willing to trade that in exchange of the military taking control) and then ask the general public who is qualified to come and work in the new temporary government in it's various fields and not allowing any political party to intervene until the country in a environment where it's ready for an election.
But well anything can happen. 🤷.
@@johanmetreus1268 If the regular military wins then expect it to be like Egypt. Brutal military dictatorship and the Egyptian government will basically go after anyone who says anything foul about it. No freedom no nothing if the SAF (which is the regular military) wins.
This outcome is actually much better than the RSF (the opposing militia) winning. Hemetti (the leader of the RSF) doesn't even know how to read...... literally he can't read. He's a hell of a business man and pretty smart considering he was building his army and empire ever since the coup in 2018. Burhan (the leader of the SAF) was too naive and couldn't figure out that Hemetti was plotting against him.
Overall, Sudan is home to many great ancient and medieval civilizations that nobody even knows about:-

Kingdom of Alwa - 357 AD

Sudan is insanely rich in resources but does not have one drop of intellect leadership just like the rest of Africa. A conflict in a resource rich nation always turns into a proxy war where other intelligent countries take advantage of the stupidity and send arms in hopes of gaining your resources. Sudan's gold would've easily lifted it's inflation burden but 70% of its gold is going to Russia and the UAE in exchange for old weapons for the RSF to use. Sudan has always had a hunger crisis and all its agricultural land is owned by Saudi Arabia and Egypt......... nobody, the RSF and SAF don't know how to manage the country and all are in it for owning an empire and are easily bribed by intelligent nations.

It's funny that you present your POV as that of an "Average Infantryman" but you're clearly more informed on these subjects than 99% of the population and the conclusions that you draw as a result of being so well informed are incredibly rational and well thought out. The Brits fought to the death against the Ottomans in WW1 and against the Italians and Germans in WW2 to control the Suez Canal and access to the Red Sea. If they lost the Suez Canal and Red Sea then trade with India and Australia was lost or else significantly delayed by having to sail up the west coast of Africa (which was a UBoat hunting ground in both wars). If you think the Suez Canal is not important remember when a ship jackknifed and ended up blocking the canal for six weeks. It took 6 months for the backlog of ships to clear.
Suez Canal and Panama canal for that matter not as important as they once were since they are both too small for the very largest ships such as super Tankers and the like. But steps being taken to widen Suez and for most ships from say China to Europe or other way round it saves average 14 days on trip time compared to going round the Cape of Good Hope. Which is a hell of a lot of Money and Carbon saved. Plus who the hell wants to go round the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn if they can avoid it........those sea's are rough.

Sudan is a beautiful country. I visited back in the mid 2000s. My father has been connected to the country since the 1970s It would be better if the Sudanese Armed forces defeated the RSF.
Regarding the geographical jackpot, the Roman empire financed over 75 percent of it’s budget by financing and taxing import/export trade from one location. The port of Berenice in what today is lower Egypt. When Rome lost access to the Red Sea and thus the lucrative trade routes finding alternative financing for its standing army turned out to be mission impossible,

@@zealous2878 Should be noted that for over the the first half of its history including the Punic Wars, Rome did not control Egypt. Also for most of its early history from 800 BC down to the reforms of Marius starting around 104BC the Legions were not a standing Army but were raised form a Malitia of Roman Citizens and other half of Army were provided by from allies (often subject allies). Thus over period of 1200 years from the very early Republic to the full of the Roman Empire in the West the Roman military and its sources of man power, eqiuipment and funding changed massively with the importance of various sources of income altering over the years. For example Julius Caesar and early Generals basically paid for their campigns and got rich from War Loot with Julius Caesar becoming the richest man in the world by basically looting the whole of Gaul and from the sale of an estimated 1.5m Gaulic Slaves. Once this long period of expansion and mad looting ended and the Roman Empire settled down inside frontiers which needed to be protected by a paid standing Army you are then looking at how this Army (and other parts of the Government) was paid for and supported. Basically the 300 year period from the end of Trajan reign to the fall of the Empire in the West. An important source of revenue was customs and other tax paid on imports of luxury goods like silk, spices etc from the East. Mostly this came via Camel Caravan along the Silk Road which ended in Roman Territory after it crossed Parthia and later Persian territory. For a while the Roman state tried to divert trade this trade via the Red Sea and Berenice but to cut Parthian/Persian income. But only for a few years and its unclear how effective these moves were. Possible that for a few years in a very long history 75% of Roman customs revenue came from Berenice but I very much doubt it this was 75% of Roman State Revenue total. You might like to look up Roman silver mines in Spain such as Castulo which provided the silver which paid for all the silks and spice imports. Also note that while the Roman Army was paid in gold and silver coins mostly minted in Roman mints from metal mined in Roman mines. A lot of its upkeep be it equipment, clothing, food, drink, animals etc was provided for by taxes paid in kind. Probably just as important as tax revenue from custome to the Imperial Roman Army was grain and other supplies drawn from the Nile Valley. And it was the later loss of this territory to the Arabs in the C7 rather than the C5 loss of what is now France, Spain, Britain etc to the Barbarians which forced the Imperial Roman Army in the East to change into a territorial force based on land revenues (look up Byzantine Themes) which is often termed the Byzantine Army.
@@stuartbailey9287 Stuart you are discussing the financing of an individual or several Roman army during the republic. I am referring to the period from 0 AD to the 6th century. In the past 20-30 years a lot of fundamental research has taken place which have shattered prior understanding of how the financing of the standing Roman army or its massive supporting infrastructure. Can you imagine some people still believe this was achieved by ransacking local barbarian villages 🙂

Leave Africa to themselves, people act as though any action done by a foreign power bar genuine colonization has ever improved their situation. They need to be allowed to stand on their own and not have entire governments and economies reliant on foreign aid. Every country on the planet has citizens who are in poverty and starving, and the fact that the world continues to plow funds into Africa when it has never worked is just ridiculous at this point.

Yeah no thanks I prefer if we sit this one out, let them solve the problem themselves or have other Middle East/African nations help em sort it out. The extent of our involvement should only be patrolling the Red Sea if the conflict causes a problem to shipping, but that is absolutely it I feel pretty confident the gross majority of us Americans are tired of getting entangled in foreign conflicts for little to no gain.

The National Guard vs. Regular Military did actually happen though it wasn't over control of the US.
Today we call it the Civil War. Although it wasn't by definition. Because it was a war of secession aka revolution aka rebellion by the Southern States at the time.
So yeah the National Guard and Regular Army did clash.
Oh and then there was the American Revolutionary War. The National Guard was there for that as well. And at that time the British Empire was the government.
So it's happened twice in the past.

Africa needs to be careful as far as population growth. They’re already dependent on other countries for food. Several African countries are looking at famine now that Ukrainian food exports are being cut off
It strikes me as odd that the continent with 60% of the world's arable land (as claimed in this video) suffers from food shortages.
@@bcanuck Africa has the land, sunshine and even the water what it needs is more farmers who are good at the job. Was shocked recently to read that Zimbabwe of all places was taking free grain from Russia. Zimbabwe has a fairly small population compared to its land area and some of the best land in Africa. It used to be the grain basket for the whole of southern Africa. Too screw up its agriculture this badly needs a special kind of incompetance.

@@bcanuckUnfortunately without extremely large quantities of fertilizer in particular, but also a host of other inputs from outside Africa, then African farmland is extremely unproductive. Without these inputs and vast amounts of food from the rest of the world then a huge percentage of the population of Africa would die of starvation.
Look at the population of Africa in the last several decades - the increase is utterly mind boggling. Really, look it up now.
What is the solution? Will the people of Africa reduce their population growth? No, this is not possible. Is the problem getting bigger every year? Yes of course. Africa's population is a ticking time bomb and will end very, very badly. Famine, wars, failed states, drought, every bad thing that you could imagine is coming.
Nations which can't feed themselves and who rely on the goodwill of others are simply doomed and doomed quickly. Africa will break in the next decade or two and nothing will be able to stop it.
At least they aren’t suffering as badly as the Sugandese…

Yeah there's been a nearly non-stop civil war in Sudan since 2013 which itself was in part due to the previous civil war that ran from 1983-2005, which itself was a continuation of the civil war of 1955-1972, which started during and due to decolonization which had started in the 40s. Combine that with all their coups, combating rebels, ethnic and religious tension, and terrorism and Sudan being at peace is more news than war which has become their normal state.
