      The jaws of this chuck are hardened. I received several comments pointing out that if you grab a material with a hard and uneven oxide film, fine scratches and dents will occur and the accuracy will drop, so I decided to put aluminum in between.

      @@SwaplampJapan Sir, this channel is great and very informative, so much machining operations, and subbed.
      Sir, what is the proper steps to take on eliminating taper while performing outside diameter finish turning on a part that is sticking out 150 millimeters, without the center.
      Is the only way to adjust the headstock, is there no other way?
      Kind regards, sir.

    • @SwaplampJapan
      @SwaplampJapan  Před rokem

      @@adamgroening Thank you for watching.
      The degree of difficulty varies depending on the diameter and material, but it is necessary to use a mobile steady rest or tilt the compound tool rest and process it in several steps.
      Alternatively, sharpen the tool very sharply to reduce cutting resistance and minimize bending of the material.

    • @adamgroening
      @adamgroening Před rokem +1

      @@SwaplampJapan Thank you sir, for the reply.
      The material is not any of the exotic materials, it is c45 steel and it's machineablity is excellent.
      The finishing cut process is done in three steps to achieve uniform tool pressure with each time taking off 0.12 millimeters.
      And still there is a difference in the diameter in the front (250.75 millimeters) and in the back (250.90 millimeters), this is a unwanted taper of 0.15 millimeters.
      The parts required is 250.75 millimeters on the outside diameter with a length of 150 millimeters.
      What I would like to do is to saw off material at 300+ millimeters so I rough and finish turn the parts over the length of 150 millimeters of the part, then do to the other side the exact same thing, and then saw the part off in the middle, and complete the part only by facing the part to the length of 150 millimeters.
      So, this is the reason.
      The steady rest will not allow me to turn the whole length of 150 millimeters, sir.
      The tool post compound rest will just follow the bedways even if I for example tilt it a little bit and will still get the taper, is this right?
      Kind regards, sir.

    • @SwaplampJapan
      @SwaplampJapan  Před rokem +1

      @@adamgroening Thanks for the detailed explanation.
      If it is a manual lathe, I thought that if I tilted the cross slide and fed it by hand, it would be straight.
      Is it correct that the front is the headstock side and the rear is the tailstock side?
      If the lathe spindle bearing preload is small and the spindle is tilted under load, or if the jaws of the chuck are not in contact with the material at a sufficient distance, the material may move against the tool during finish cutting. You can check with a dial gauge whether it is escaping to the side or the top.
      With old machines that have frequently shaved castings, the bed near the headstock may be worn unevenly and become tapered.
