Released in 1989 On Album "Like a Prayer"
Madonna recorded “Like a Prayer” for her 1989 studio album of the same name, which was released as the lead single.
“Like a Prayer” signaled a more artistic and personal approach to songwriting from Madonna, who felt she needed to cater more to her adult audience. The video for the song was quite controversial, primarily for its portrayal of Madonna kissing a black saint and other supposedly sacrilegious religious imagery.

I agree with you; this is her best but she has a lot more Hits coming up. To explain this video, all I can say is that this video is about the attack of a white woman by a group of white men. Madonna plays a witness in the video; she sees the attack and when the group of white men run away; a black man runs to the women to try to save her or get help. The police arrived and thinks the black man was the attacker so the put him in handcuffs. Thewhilte man looks at Madonna threatening her not say anything; that's when she runs to the church for her. The church inspires her to be brave and tell the truth. In the end she goes to the police station and tell them that they arrested the wrong man. The video is basically a story about social injustice and the persecution of black people especially black man by the police department and society. The burning crosses are a symbol of racism in the United States when White people used to burned crosses in front of the the house of black citizens to send them a message that they were wanted in their neighborhood; but the Catholic church got mad at Madonna because they saw the burning crosses as blasphemy. This was basically similar to what is going on today with police shootings. It was a protest type of video just like the Black Lives Matter movement of today. In other words; Madonna was ahead of her time.

This was a very controversial video at the time it was released. The Vatican came out against her because of all the religious symbolism she used, like the stigmata on her palms after she dropped the knife, to the burning crosses. Her critics tried to censor her but she came back harder. She truly was groundbreaking
