Star Fox started off very strong, but seemed to quickly lose its footing with a lot of questionable titles. Let's take a look at all of them.

I always appreciated Assault for being the last Star Fox game tried to innovate on the gameplay without completely throwing out the formula. The Aparoids were both cool and kinda scary alternates to Andross and Star Fox and Star Wolf being able to team up together is just is a great idea.

    Just imagine;
You’re in an enclosed room with barely any lights. You ran out of power because you closed the door trying to keep the green, slimy, bipedal mutant from getting to you. The doors? Open. Your defenses? Non-existent. Then, from the shadows of what was once your only hope (now unusable), you hear the faint, bone-chilling voice of what a child of the Grim Reaper would sound like say…

Not only did Krystal became fully integrated into SF, she effectively became the defacto lead female character of the franchise while Fara Phoenix (from a tie in comic to SF1), Miyu, Fay, and to a lesser extent Katt all fell by the wayside.

    • @kurokamina8429
      @kurokamina8429 Před 26 dny +7

To be fair, Fara phoenix, Miyu, and Fay are all characters that weren't made by Imamura and so didn't survive the transition to 64 or future games. Star Wolf survived the transition because Imamura made those characters. Katt is a side character that isn't apart of the team and disappears as soon as she arrived (like seriously she shows up in the fortuna level in zero and just disappears, didn't even help fight the two headed dragon). Not at all ment to bash on Katt.
Krystals coming back in later titles despite not originally being a StarFox is actually interesting because the Krystal we get is not only a Star Fox Character but a nintendo character. Weird I know, let me explain so during development of Adventures Rare made plans to remove Krystal completely but Imamura wanted to keep her. He did a redesign of her to be the blue fox with little being covered. That one redesign of her, that one moment if wanting to removed her cause her to become a StarFox character and a nintendo character. She was remade by Imamura (who designs and writes StarFox) and who was at the time a Nintendo employee. It also helps that Miyamoto liked her too.

And the narrative that Star Fox 64 kicked off with made everything much MUCH worse. Just when they had the chance to start fresh....look at what they did. Great ideas for gameplay. And suddenly nobody's heads were screwed on straight. They were legit so lost and confused, it's no wonder why Zero had no arcade mode, didn't do anything to curb all the misinformation, flubbed the whole portals plotpoint, and rehashed a Star Fox 64's story in a more disjointed way. They literally could have just done OG Star Fox or anything else and gotten away with it. In the end, their attempt to cater to OG, SF2, and SF64 fans sank with the Wii U.

that being said, it's still kinda funny that he totally missed changing the control scheme on assault by that same token. my guess is that he just assumed that it wasn't a thing since a lot of older games didn't give you the option to change the entire control scheme, only things like inverting the camera and other such minor options. still funny tho.

I later hunted all the other games down and now own copies of every game in the series. The same thing happened on my FNAF journey: I started with one game, coincidentally the one most of the fans consider inferior and the most hated in the series, and I ended up loving it enough to buy the whole series.

It's obvious where Star Fox Zero went wrong with the controls. The devs trusted people too much to not be idiots. Like giving a someone a cooking knife and asking him to chop up whatever fast. Do you have any idea how many cut themselves because they don't know where their hand actually is?
Here's one better? How many people have you seen go in the direction they are looking? Instead of realizing they can shoot independent of where they're going?
How many crashed because of their complete lack of awareness?
And that's not consider the mountain of misinformation people circle jerked around. There was no fighting that because it this is a Nintendo game. Morons will brush you off like some fanboy even if you prove them wrong.

I don't understand why Nintendo can't figure out what to do with this series. It's really simple. Either make Star Fox 2 again, or make a linear game like Assault but have branching paths where you can choose which mission to go on with which character, and then they converge later on. For example, maybe there's a branch where the team splits up, with Falco going to Fichina and Fox going to Solar, and you get to pick which one you're going to follow, and then they meet back after afterwards. Also bring back Miyu, Faye, and Krystal. I have no idea why Nintendo is so allergic to female playable characters that aren't named Samus, aside from the obvious reason.

I wasn't great at the versus mode and a bit disappointed by the lack of a coop mode, but I got all the silver medals and about half of the gold medals for the 10 levels, the silver medals unlocking an arcade game that I forget the name of. I think part of the issue is that the entire Star Fox continuity has been massively complicated by the existence of Command. How do you continue forward from a game that has like a billion endings, other than just retconning the entire thing? Not that I (or probably most people) would be against it, but it feels like the creatives at Nintendo just don’t know what direction to take.

This option I think is basically a reimagining or a rewrite of commands story which is more preferable. This is a better option because if they changed the style of the gameplay to 64 or Assault then they would have to change how the story is told.
Fox and Krystals drama was WAY more of a focus then the Anglars which feel like an after thought. They can't do that with a 64 style they have to make the Anglars be the focus so the drama between fox and Krystal would be retconned or just something in the prolog that doesn't amount to anything because they are just teammates now.

@@harrisonkasun7542 about that... Nintendo never stated that it was a reboot but just a reimagining. Reimagining is just another term they slap on a title like a remake or remaster. Look at Metroid ZERO Mission, its called a reimagining by the creator but it did not reboot the series. Also Star Fox Zero resembles 64 so much because A. Miyamoto felt like the 64 style would work with his gimmick and B. It's Miyamoto, of course he's gonna use lylat wars again.
Also StarFox Zero the battle begins name drops Sauria and starlink DLC references DP with the Corneria Cake. A very weird reboot if they are using elements 64 purist would despise. Also one of the trailers for zero was the "the history of StarFox" which is weird to do if it's a reboot. Wouldn't you want to leave it all in the past?
Star Fox Zero is the lylat wars from a different perspective and exists in the same spot as the original starfox and 64. They are interchangeable in the timeline.

Star Fox Assault is my favorite entry in the series. The Story is obviously peak in the series but the gameplay is the really fun part. The on rail sections is obviously great but the on foot missions were really cool and would really benefit from a sequel or a reimagining of the game to polish its ideas. They are missions that took starfox 64 and took it to the next level by letting you switch between vehicles on the fly. Handling a situation however you want to handle it. In a way its an entry more in line with modern nintendos FREEDOM philosophy. Mario, Zelda, and pokemon going into this open sandbox where the player can go and do whatever how ever they want to.
I am really happy that after Zero came out that people came back to these older entries and realized that they were treating them too harshly. Some even started to feel like Star Fox Assault had the right idea and it just needed a gameplay sequel.
I really recommend giving Assault another go but using the duel stick control option the game provides when you create a user.

StarFox Zero was made around the gamepad, it was a wii u gamepad game first and foremost then a starfox game. Try to give it traditional controls and give the walker 3rd person controls and guess what? You can actually get through the levels but you more then likely won't be able to get all of the medals or the high scores because of how the enemies are placed. Even the boss are gonna be an ass to beat without them. Even if they could it would still be lylat wars again. People outside of the community laugh at us because of narratives like "The StarFox series is only one game" "StarFox fans don't like or want change" "StarFox fans just want to play the EXACT SAME GAME over and over again". Very pleased to hear you enjoyed 2. It's probably my personal favorite in the series; the combination of arcade dogfighting with RTS elements is surprisingly engaging, especially on the higher difficulties.
I think the broader problem Star Fox has is that it's a genre that has, unfortunately, fallen out of favor over the years. Shmups were a-dime-a-dozen during the NES and SNES days, and there were still a decent number of 'em in the N64/Playstation era. After that, they started to kinda die out, with other genres taking their place instead. Nowadays, that kind of gameplay seems to only crop up in indie titles and the occasional remake.
That's also why I think Zero was doomed from the start - marketing such an out-of-vogue genre as a big-shot system-seller was never going to end well, even if the game itself wasn't saddled with the motion control issues. I'd call it a safe bet that, if we ever get another Star Fox game, it probably won't be a shmup - and if it is, it'll be a budget-title at best. Which kinda sucks.

33:46 There is a sense of irony to recommending players to change their control settings to get the most enjoyment out of Star Fox Zero, after complaining about the tank controls in Assault when that game offers a Dual Stick control method (which does have the issue of using R to shoot, which wouldn't be bad if it wasn't on the GameCube controller, but you do drop the tank controls). I would accept a remaster of either game to improve the controls however (and in the case of Assault, possibly expand the multiplayer even more).
On that note, I do think it would have been neat if there was a brief overview of the multiplayer modes as well, since 64's multiplayer actually originated the on-foot gameplay of Assault (albeit in a more limited form), Assault has the most fleshed-out multiplayer with 16 stages (with 5 generic stages, 8 stages taken from the campaign, a stage around the Great Fox, and 2 stages on Titania and Zoness unique to multiplayer) and several items, Command drastically simplifying the multiplayer, and 64 3D following in suit by only having the Arwing sections of 64's multiplayer and only allowing other players through download play. There was also the Star Fox crossover with Starlink: Battle for Atlas that happened in 2018, which is drastically different from the other Star Fox games but still serves as their most recent appearance in a game outside of Smash Bros and is integrated into the story right from the start of the campaign.
As for the future of the Star Fox series, there is hope since apparently Nintendo Switch Sports has some Star Fox data in the files, so hopefully we get a new game on the Switch's successor as a way to show what the new console is capable of.

Not just the Nintendo sports stuff but there as been a brand new trade mark for starfox (not renewed) around the same time of princess peach getting a new trademark for her new game. Then recently Mr. Robot found either two new starfox trademarks or just another new one but with more details for both trademarks. One being categorized as Puzzles or jigsaw Puzzles and another being entertainment related. Based on the other trademarked things listed and how they are categorized, the Puzzles one is probably just that and the entertainment one isn't for a game but something related to movies or TV shows. Considering that Zelda is finally getting its live action adaptation after the original one got canceled thanks to Netflix, Nintendo might be revisiting there StarFox show that they were also planning to do with Netflix.

Nintendo has often said they have no interest in revisiting a franchise unless they can do something completely unique for it. This, I think, is why they struggle so much with Star Fox. The first game solidly established the concept, 64 perfected it, and since then... they've had no idea what the hell to do with it. I fear it's going to be a long time before they try again with it.

"Quit complicating Star Fox! Just make a good on-rails shooter, Nintendo!".
Easier said than done, given that on-rails shooters don't sell well anymore.

Okay, here me out… give the IP to Camelot and have them pull a Panzer Dragoon Saga. Make a fantastic turn-based RPG where the battle system incorporates the air fights. It’d probably make a lot of people mad, but it’d be hilarious if it ended up being the best game in the series.

I've been on a StarFox binge myself lately and suddenly one of my favorite CZcamsrs makes a Starfox video. Funny how that works out.
I figured the assault section would go like that. While it's not perfect assault was a blueprint that they SHOULD have gone with. A better balance of gameplay modes and more fleshed out objectives would have been perfect going forward but nope. Command had to exist
Also can we stop pretending that ground control is THAT bad? It's got the same control screen as Metroid prime save for one button and even then there is a twin stick option. And while something like this shouldn't factor into a review I'm pretty sure most people who have never played assault before are going to emulate it so just, use the twin stick option and modify the controls in the emulator and it's fine.
I also really enjoyed Star Fox Zero. Be on rail stuff is fantastic as always and the all range mode isn't super bad until it requires lock on precision

A couple things to note, There are mods for the original Star Fox to make it run at a proper framerate and not 5 FPS and even if Star Fox 64 3D looks a lot prettier, the voice acting took a major hit.

I've always said of Nintendo's tendency to lean on just Star Fox 64 as something to be expected. After all, SF64 is the only one *they* made.

The funniest part is, as a N64 fan and SNES fan, the first Star Fox game i ever played was 2 on the Switch recently 😂😂😂😂

The name Gilly! Do you have Scythian heritage? Lots of people with Scottish heritage do, the earliest kings of Scotland say we came from Scythia. The first king of Scythia was Hercules. Scythia did not exist at the time of Babel. Hercules was a Danite Jew named Samson. That's why Scythian language was Iranic. You could be a lost Jew. Jesus came for lost Jews. I think that in the book of Revelations, the third of the sea turning to blood is you discovering which of Noahs three sons you come from. God can turn the Bible in to his version of a Ouija Board if you seek him out. You should give up pork and keep the Sabbath, it's what Jesus would have wanted :)
