gt40 had serious power on the straights
It's probably the 427 V8 version
fantastic views ! thanks for the upload
SO many words to say! This was purely awesome.
Thank you, happy you enjoyed it.
Great video, fun to watch. Thanks for putting it up.
Thank you :)
Killer driving man
The gt40 has some serious giddup
That was so awesome! Great driving. The way the GT-40 was pulling on the straight a ways I thought ‘no chance’. Awesome job!
That raspy/gurgle sounding ford. Badass
Great video! A few times, Mr GT was like ... nope...cya 😀
Corvette forever... Greetings from Costa Rica.
Pura Vida, my wife and I had the pleasure of vacationing in Costa Rica five years ago.
@@clivethecorvette Really? That’s great. I hope you come again… with your Corvette, if you have one… I have one of each generation, from C1 to C8… in 1/18 scale… lol. Best wishes from pura vida land
Bad ass! Plus you got to hang out with some legends, thanks for the video
Seriously 228k miles. Dang. Go American V8 💪
Looks like a lot of fun and serious work at the same time no time for fun and games
This year I definitely treated it as fun, I didn't put myself under any pressure.
Awesome to see you using that vacation acquisition to it's fullest!
Yes, it's been the best vacation I could ever have. :)
Great sportsmanship too! Gave the GT40 driver a wave after you got by with your stickier tires. This was really fun to watch, thanks again!
Why would the Vette have stickier tires?
@@jeffspicolli593Does this really warrant an answer? Come on man! Better brand of tire; been around the track for more laps; tires are warmer which equates to a stickier surface tread; different inflation pressure; I'm sure there could be more reasons possible but you can chew on those for awhile. *LOL!*
@@niradnagrom2356 The GT40 will have had a few tire changes since the 1960's possibly to a more race spec tire than the C6 is running.
I just wondered if you knew something.
@@jeffspicolli593No just enjoyed Clive gaining and ultimately taking the GT40 and deduced it may have been a better all around tire going around the curves but then again that would diminish the obvious skill of the driver to assume tires were all the difference. Thank you for the engaging; mutually respectful conversation. Have a nice evening; supper's on the table - goodnight.
@@niradnagrom2356 10/4 take care.
Looks like the GT40 driver was being a bit more conservative in the adverse conditions, staying off the curbs, not getting on the power until straight, and then being gracious once you got past. Would love to see a rematch in the dry, bet it'd be even harder to get past.
LOOKS LIKE THAT GT -40 IS MUCH LIGHTER THAN THE CORVETTE,…? 🇺🇸🏁
@@Dominator37 Certainly should be, which can limit traction in the wet if the tyres are too wide.
@@PiDsPagePrototypes I think thats way the GT is quicker in the straightaways … Love to see a Chaparral 2-F running out there it was just as fast as the ford Gt’s
Plus that GT-40 cost a lot more that that ubiquitous Corvette,, so I expect the GT pilot being more conservative than the other!! But as you can see the Vette had a hard time keeping up with that GT-40, also tire technology is better with that newer vette!! IMO ❤
@@ricardocorbie6803 Are you saying that the Gt-40 would waste a ubiquitous street mustang GT- 500 too..? Yes i agree…!
Fabulous Video, well done Dave !
Thank you :)
Awesome.
I love how he does a little wiggle it.
He lets it all hang out
Fun man. Good driving.
awesome vid sir - tough conditions, everybody behaving but driving hard. Pretty amazing what 40 yrs makes in the technology. And you have some fast hands there, I'd be the goof that spins in front of you in the Caterham....
Thanks, agreed, some excellent driving standards, no-one blocking, just out driving their own race.
The 40 looked faster on the straight away but the vette cornered better . Impressive display for a car with over 200K
Agreed, the better tyres certainly helped me through the turns. I agree with you, I can't see many other sports cars being able to compete reliably like this at 228k miles? :)
The wet track kept the GT40 from walking away.
@@MoragTong_ We've competed against each other three times now at the same track, I'm 2-1 up so far. The time the GT40 beat me was when it was a lot wetter and I was using more of a semi-slick tyre. It's all for fun.
Another great drive, David! Love the track level camera
I would be remiss if I failed to mention the camera placement. Incredible footage!
Thanks, it's the first time I tried a GoPro on the bumper, it worked well.
@@clivethecorvette *AGREED!*
What a ride!! Thanks for sharing
You were out there hurting feelings man! Fun to watch; thanks for sharing!
I'm a ford guy, so I'm in the gt40 camp. But that was just good racing. Your car sounds sweet, and you could be listening to your stereo with the air conditioner on while the gt driver sweats it out. Lol. In real world, blue collar working terms, you can still jump in your car and take it for a spin without fear. So there's a lot to be said for that alone.
Keep having fun, that's all I'm saying.
Production based Corvette against a lightweight tube chassis purpose built race car . . . 😊
damn... gotta be EXTRA CAREFUL around a GT40 on the track... lol
Absolutely right, I did NOT want to run into the back of it! 🙃
If I could, I would have a C6 Z06 for the track…
Me too. Maybe one day, but they are quite a jump up in cost.
This is awesome
EXCELLENT VIDEO. Thanks for making it. INCREDIBLE how how the GT40 simply overpowers and outruns the Vette on the straights. From the body configuration I'm assuming it was a small block GT40 but that would also be assuming it was original and not a built for racing kit car. I wonder if he "let you by," or did your Vette outperform the GT40 ??
It's interesting how your better performing tires were still noticeably slipping, requiring great skill to keep the car under control.
Thank you, I'm so pleased that people are enjoying the video. It's odd that the track looked dry, but was actually damp throughout, but with little to no spray, it sure was slippery though. I suspect he let me by this time, but he beat me two years ago at the same event, when conditions were wetter and I was on Nankang AR-1 tyres. I've just had a quick search online for that GT40. It's been successful in the hands of the driver, Jason Wright, winning the Spa 6 Hours race, as well as competing with success at Le Mans and Goodwood. I found this video too: czcams.com/video/9xNC2l9TNxE/video.html
@@clivethecorvette Thanks for the reply. Your helpfulness and generosity remind me of the many wonderful racers I participated in the Carrera Panamericana with several times in the 90's. I watched the video you linked and it seems obvious it's a REAL GT40 considering the man's wealth and other automobiles. Keep after him while racing !! I don't know the rules your under but I hope you can find something to do to your car that will make it more competitive with that GT40. Very impressive that your factory made for transportation Vette does so well. Is it modified much at all besides special tires ?
@@crazyoilfieldmechanic3195 There is lots more I could do to my car to make it faster, but I run it on a budget, plus it's my daily driver, so I need it to be reliable. I have made some simple modifications to suspension and brakes, still on the leaf springs though, which work well for me. The two performance changes are a shorter final drive and headers. Other than that it's stock power, even down to the tune. :)
Looks fun!
Tire management is key. In the old days of Winston cup, when a car would lose a cylinder, they were faster. Simply could mash the pedal and not break the tires free out of the corners.
Bad Ass vette!
GT-40 or modern GT. Big difference.
I like riding in cars!
If these two powerhouses were in 3rd and 4th, dear Lord, what was running 1st and 2nd ?
You can find out in part 2 :) czcams.com/video/3upeN4k3Y6M/video.html
@@clivethecorvette Thanks, I’ll check it out
I love how a 60 yr old car is still outrunning a modern corvette in the straights and sounds like it only has the 289CI in there.
Corvette is no slouch
Looks like a Sunday drive through the park. Not sure why they like driving and then trying to accelerate over the painted white lines. I know it makes the track smaller using them. Those are slippery when wet.
Very nice! What camera are you using for your race footage....
I have a pair of Go Pro Session 4, the little cube-shaped cameras. I record in HD, medium field of view. I was impressed with the sound it recorded on the outside, not too much wind noise.
This makes me feel not as bad having a c6 z06 with 100k miles. I plan on swapping everything out with custom power train
I'd love a Z06, such a capable car. Check out this channel: www.youtube.com/@JoshVanVeld
That gt40 had some ass 💯💪
The GT40 acceleration is something to behold. It can’t seem to keep a competitive entry speed into turns unless maybe the Ford driver is babying a classic racer?
I think there is probably an element of caring for such a valuable car. The GT40 was on older design tires too.
The higher red line of the GT40 allowed him to stay ahead of you when you needed to change gear.
Newer brake tech.
That vette was holdin back.nice
The driver in the GT40 held back just as much. Don't underestimate the small tire MK I GT40. It's close 500 Kg lighter than the C6 Vette and has roughly the same Power stock for stock. The tires and brakes are much worse of course, but especially in those conditions you can't just drive around a GT40 in a base C6.
That Gt40 let you know a few times He could Dog walk your ass at anytime !!
Yet gt40 still got passed. Maybe in needed repairs?
Great video but your car doesn't seem to have a roll cage?
You're right. The competition is called 'The Pomeroy Trophy'. It's a 'race' to complete a set number of laps, with the number determined by the type of car you have and host of measurements. So whilst it's not strictly wheel to wheel racing every driver has to have a full race licence and minimum safety requirements. I've taken part three years in a row and have only seen one small amount of damage to two cars, in my experience it's at least as safe/unsafe as a track day or Time Attack.
@@clivethecorvette Yeah, I do track days all the time, I think it may be safer than driving down the expressway the way things are today.
How does that GT40 driver keep the car on track is what I want to know
Agreed, given the greasy track conditions he did well.
What mods have you done to make it trackable?
Hi and thank you. It's a long read, but everything I have done with the car is here: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=47&t=1758933 In brief, it's a base (non Z51) 1LT, so as basic as they come.
I have: stiffer leaf springs (Z06 rear, Hyperco race front), KW V3 dampers, Cadillac ATS front Brembo calipers and 2 piece Z06-sized front discs, Z51 rear discs, Mintex F2R front pads, F6R rear. Fidanza alloy flywheel, Motive Gear 4.10 diff ratio, Speed Engineering headers going to 2.5" NPP back boxes, Improved Racing oil cooler kit and a small Mocal oil cooler for the power steering fluid. The engine is stock power, although as I've carried out some maintenance I've upgraded parts such as rocker bearings, hardened pushrods, valve springs, oil pump etc. I use Liqui Moly 5W30 in cooler months, then swap to 5W40 in the summer. Yokohama tyres, the stock wheels run on 20mm spacers with longer ARP studs. I have a Sparco QRT-R Evo L drivers seat, with 6 point harnesses, on an AMT seat mount to lower the seat to the floor. Stock tune, but it has been checked for fuelling and the table adjusted for fan speed. All of the above have been added slowly over 6 years. The biggest differences to track driving were the diff ratio and seat. The number 1 item to add to a base for track driving is an oil cooler and a power steering cooler. Hope that helps. :)
@@clivethecorvetteGreat write up! I’ll take a look, thanks for the reply.
I thought adjusting the radio at 120mph was a nice touch Dave
😄
Had to... he grew bored waiting for the gt40 to concede the position.
What's the set up on the vet and the GT40?
The GT40 is an FIA car, so it runs in the same spec as in the '60's. My C6 is a base model, 2007, 6 litre LS2, with 228,000 miles. It has stiffer leaf springs and KW dampers, Cadillac front brakes, Mintex F series race pads, headers and some mods for better cooling. It makes around 410bhp at the flywheel, that's about 10 more than stock.
I might consider activating the competition mode on the car rather than turning off all the traction controls. Looks like some of the corners are tight and the back end is getting away from you. Other than that; Boy did than GT 40 pull on the straight.
Competition mode is quite effective, but I don't use it for two reasons. I trail brake quite heavily in some corners, to get the nose turned in and the car rotated before the exit. Competition mode stops this from happening sometimes. Secondly, it's just not as much fun. It might be slower, but having the car sliding around is just more enjoyable, even if the stopwatch disagrees. :)
@@clivethecorvette Completely understood. That's the point. If your having fun, who cares about lap times. Bravo to you. I'm impressed with your C6 with over 200,000 miles. Great job.
I didn't know if you were looking to do the lap times, or have fun. Mu bad. I have a C6 and also race it. The rear on my car does the same thing yours does. Too much power and not enough grip
Had C6 Z06. Sold it. Gear lever too far back. Better in my C2😮. Pedals not possible to do heel-toe. Electronic glitches. Too bad😢
That's a shame, good that you experienced ownership, even if less than positive. You can pethaps hear that I heel and toe on every downchange, I have stock pedals too. The gear lever is great and I've had zero electrical faults too. It's maybe our different proportions, plus a bit of bad luck? Thanks for sharing though.
that 40 looked like it had some muscle under the hood, but then you seem to be a little easy.
At Ford is blowing your ass away and it’s old technology compared to your car. God bless you just having fun.
Yes, considering the Corvette is 40 years newer the GT40 is impressive. It was state of the art at that time, plus it's not weighed down by air con, carpets, cd player and all the comforts the Corvette has to lug around. The C6 still uses leaf springs and the engine is 2 valves per cylinder and pushrod, so not very high tec. As you say, it's all for fun. :)
I’d take the GT40 any day over the C6, no question….40+years of technical progress, and still took some doing….plus, you tell people you got a C6 they say cool, you tell them you have a GT40, they say bitchin….
I would have the GT40 too. The GT40 had a single purpose, to win on the track, cost no object. My base model Corvette was built as a road-going sports car, with storage space, comfort, emissions, relatively low price tag and all sorts of other factors that compromise track performance. It made for a great fun battle on the track, so I'm happy. :)
The steering wheel is very tricky it looks like….
You are correct. :) I've set the car up to be responsive, plus the conditions were very slippery, even though the track looked dry.
You are so fast because you are driving from the proper (left) side of the car. lol
Left is right
GT40 driver was MASSIVELY babying that car.
I'd say he was trying pretty hard, but not so much that he'd throw it into the scenery.
Tail out at 120 mph in a C6 has to be.... frighting. My nightmare.
What mode did you have the stability control and does it even work at those speeds?
Also... 3-4 shift is usually higher for me, 100+ (LS2) are you running different gears or just going easy on the motor?
Not frightening, but it kept me alert, that's for sure. I always drive with all traction and stability off. It would be safer with competition mode on, but it sometimes stops me rotating the car on corner entry. Besides, it's fun sliding around. :) Well noticed, I have the base gearbox, but with 4.10 diff ratio. I'm using all the revs, changing at 6500rpm.
Haha...that GT40 consitantly walks away from yuo like you're going the other way...the wet track is the only reason you hung with him at all.
Yup, power and weight counts, no matter what age the car is. I'm pretty certain the GT40 doesn't have 228,000 miles on that engine. It's a thing of beauty though, I was happy to follow behind and hear that exhaust tone. :)
if Dan Gurney was driving that GT 40 no way you would pass that GT 40 it pulled hard on straights away from you it's a old classic and the owner does not want to wreck it because it's worth way more than your gm.
Everything you say is true, although if Ollie Gavin were in my car he could drive it that much faster too. I'm happy with the pace of my $10,000 Vette, it was an honour to chase the GT40. :)
Seems the steering is loose or he is taking the wrong line and needs to over correct.
No, it's just that the conditions were very slippery. Hard to tell from the video, but the whole track was damp, plus it was February in the UK, so quite cold.
Among the worst conditions of a track.@@clivethecorvette
Grandpa GT40 was walking away from you.
No shame in that, a GT40 is a powerful, light sports racing car. It was a privilege to get to follow it. :)
Not when it counted.
Impressive driving!
Thank you 🙂
Equal drivers the Ford GT40 easily beats the Corvette
You're right, I'll take that as a compliment though. 🙂
Hey big dog...try driving a car without all the nannies. I assume you have anti-lock and traction control?
I can assure you all nannies are off in this and every other video I've posted. The Corvette can't rotate and slide with them on; it's sometimes slower, but much more fun with them off. :)
I didn't see you out there so stop the hate.
I feel much better about owning a base model C 6 now . .
You should, a base is superb sports car. It's not our fault they made the Z06, Grand Sport and ZR1 that bit better. ;) I only paid $9995 for mine, at the end of 2017, at that price it was the best I could afford and have no regrets.
@racelife1 For comparison, down here in New Zealand I paid 56 thousand for an 05 . 32 thousand miles on the clock with the manual z51 package . Couple of years ago.
What a price difference, eh . .
Yer your right , it's not our fault the zo6 exists . .
i would get rid of those yokohama tires
Why? The Yokohama AD09 felt good to me. The Corvette finished 2nd overall, just missing out on 1st by 0.2 seconds and I drove home on them afterwards. 😎
