Ref & coach here. New rules say both fo's have to go for the clamp first, so directing a pole to immediately stand up is gonna get you a procedure call

That’s incorrect. New rules say you have to make a play at the ball, not necessarily a clamp. The pole can absolutely stand up immediately without attempting a clamp. You are allowed to shovel (lift bottom hand or under shaft), fish hook (reach around their right hand and pull towards you (can’t be anything above the cuff of the glove or directly on top of the head of the stick), or he can simply stand up and wait for the FO guy to pull the ball out.

Refs don’t know this like I’m getting body slammed and jumped on and getting cross checked but they don’t go for ball

I’m a Faceoff coach and truly love when they pole my guys. Teach your Faceoff guys how to shovel instantly to make it a 50/50 GB and have your LSM crash hard on the 50 yard line. It’s definitely a nightmare compared to going against an LSM

    Would you also consider:
Getting stops on Defense AND clearing effectively? (Must be both, not one)
There's also a way to direct the opposing draw man backwards and then jump him/get into a ride to hopefully get a chance at causing a turnover closer to your attacking goal. (Happy to talk about this if interested.)
Scout the F/O guy & team tendencies - is he going to go to the goal? Can he even shoot? How much help do they give him breaking out for the ball? Basically, is there anything they do once he wins it that you could twist/exploit?
If the stronger F/O kid is the only one taking draws, can you put others up there to wear him out/get physical? I'm not advocating hurting someone, but there is truth to one guy getting nicked up from having to go up against several players the entire game, even if he's winning a lot. If your team can make it physically hard for him to get a GB, that takes a toll after a bit.

My whole thesis on this is 1) don’t get beat clean. So many teams throw a pole at the face to stop and chop and they get torched against great face off men because they try to face off before they play d. 2) contest the ball for a chance to win it 3) play solid D if you lose it. Essentially, give yourself a chance to win in whatever way possible if you are outmatched. I think you’re playing the defend and clear game regardless if you’re outmatched. Any additional strategy you can throw at it before you concede the possession is great. I’m all for throwing a bruiser out there to tire them out. But it has to be the right way. No unnecessary hacking and slashes.
