You cannot imagine the emotional trauma that an entire theater of children endured during a screening of this movie. My 2nd older sister cried herself into a bloody nose and then threw up on herself because of the blood. I was 4 and I only remembered all of the crying.
And now I will only see E.T. as Wendy Williams.

Jason, I'm sorry for your loss! Losing a co-pilot sucks, but you had more good times than the sadness, and that means that he loved you too.
My four year old cousin went with us to see this movie. The theater was packed so we couldn't sit together, but when ET died we could hear him wailing from the other side of the theater. If this movie doesn't touch you you have a heart of stone.
I think between this and Star Trek II parents probably were wondering why they took their kids to the movie for a cry fest.
@@zatoichi1 -- I was pretty little in 1982, and saw both of these in the theater. I cried when ET "died" and i cried when (no spoiler) you-know-what happened in Star Trek II. Actually, i still do in both cases.

I love the stories Drew Barrymore tells about this film, Steven Spielberg made sure that ET was always active when she was on set- making him appear real to her. Steven filled a father role that she never had, and this film started that. Some people were creeped out by this film, I find it heartwarming ❤
Also filmed by the poltergeist house. Filming was being done at both places.
He seen the girls at the same time and had to figure out where to put each girl.
Steven said he would find her on set having whole conversations with the ET puppet.
It was actually the puppeteer crew that notice she was talking to the prop during downtimes so they made sure that at least one of them was always free to animate it to some degree to maintain the connection she had. The end result was her emotional goodbye.

Saw this in a packed theater at 11 years old. The theater was so full our family couldn't even all sit together. One of the best memories of my life and the last time I remember a standing ovation from everyone at the end of the movie. What an experience....props to the orchestra and soundtrack in this film...WOW just wow.

My parents took me to see quite a few films as a kid, but what I remember most was my dad taking me to see _Star Wars_ and _E.T.,_ and the little "sniffs" I heard from him at the end of this. This film just blew everything else away that summer, and there was a major effort made to keep E.T.'s appearance a secret for as long as possible. But eventually, he was doing the "phone home" in commercials for AT&T.
I was 16 years old in 1982, and this was the first film I had seen that reflected my own home life-divorced single mom, three kids, oldest a boy who has taken on the role of “man of the house,” determined to protect his mother from thoughtless comments from his younger brother.
I was 14 when this came out and I still laugh at ET running and screaming with his arms up.
Neil Diamind released a song after seeing the movie called "Heartlight." It did very well on the charts.

I remember going to the cinema with my fiance to see this when it was released, and he and many other grown men lit cigarettes when it got to the emotional bits. All of a sudden, flares of red cigarette ends and lighter clicks, because none of them wanted to cry. 🙂

Fun fact…. They first approached M&M for the Candy bit. They turned it down and Reese’s Pieces was asked. It made that candy go to the stratosphere in sales.

In the part where Elliot lures E.T. with candy. Originally E.T. was supposed to eat M&M candy. But the whole thing was a massive missed opportunity for Mars Incorporated.
Spielberg originally intended for that iconic moment to involve M&Ms. The only reason they never ended up in the movie was that Mars Incorporated, who own M&Ms, refused to give the filmmaker permission to use the multi-coloured chocolates. As a result, Spielberg chose Reese’s Pieces as a replacement.
Hershey Foods, who own Reese’s Pieces, struck a deal to promote the movie, dedicating $1 million to advertising, all whilst Universal allowed them to feature the titular alien in their visual media. Earning close to $800 million at the box office from a budget of just $10.5 million, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial became a significant hit and, as a result, sales for Reese’s Pieces jumped 85% in the weeks following its release in June 1982.
Remarkably, the film and candy are still inextricably linked, with the deal between the movie and the food company being one of the most successful examples of product placement in movie history.
And personally I prefer Reese’s Pieces myself over M&Ms. They're quite tasty and one of my old time favorites. When I go to the movie theaters. Along with plain popcorn and coca-cola.😄
me Reeses pieces are far better than M&Ms, except peanut butter M&M's, but they weren't around yet in the 80's. Reeses pieces became one of my go to movie theater foods too though. Problem is i eat the whole bag and have sugar mouth for days.

This movie I remember being really big at the drive in theaters.
Whole families would pack up the car, truck, and big back then station wagons.
Just imagine the sound of the sobbing and crying.
If you have never been to a drive in movie, find one and go.

In the theatre class i took in high school, this was one of the films we had to study… the keys, the smoke (from ice), all of those things helped with the effects… it’s awesome to see how far film has come

You've experienced "The ET Effect" . . . . . so many growing up freaked out and avoiding it, then finally watching and weeping. Speilberg does have a way of taking a mundane orpossibly scary subject and putting heart into it.
Fun fact: in the 2011 comedy movie "Paul" (Seth Rogen, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost), the alien "Paul" consults with the real Steven Spielberg who was looking for advice on his new E.T. film. Great cameo (voice only).

I was 10 when this came out (a year younger than the actor who played Elliott). Coming out in June it because such a massive film across the planet. Staying in the top 5 in every country it was showing for almost a year. And everything in it became part of pop culture. And even in my 50's now, that movie still effects me. The John Williams score won all the awards, since it was a vital part of the story.
And again, thank you sir for watching apart of my childhood.

Back in '82, if coach would...I mean when ET came out I stood in line all the way down the road to see this. Then Again a few years later, and finally hit home video in 86. Those were different times for sure

I'm a year late but Jason I'm incredibly sorry for your loss.
When i loss my gorgeous queen co pilot Susie. I had to remind myself that losing our beloved co pilots is the price we pay for having them in our lives. Its a very heavy price, but worth every cent.
Vet said she had less than a week of life left, but I was given the decision to put her down there or wait. Decided to wait and we got 13 more precious months. Unfortunately she passed away on my birthday.. Thankfully it was peacefully, painless and with a belly full of high quality steak.
Being told she didnt have long fucked me up, but allowed me to grieve her death before she was truly taken. That made that year i got with her an incredible blessing.
I was only two years old when I watched E.T. in a movie theatre. My mom took me and my older sister to see it, thinking it was a kids movie. Someone had told her that. However, the film was too scary for me, so I spent most of the time sitting on my mom's lap. She comforted me and held me tight. Years later, Mom and I watched J's reaction together and we laughed and had a good time this go around. Also this time I did not sit on her lap. Progress!
To Jason, who lost his co-pilot, you have my deepest sympathy and are not alone in these difficult times! My beloved co-pilot PoopPoops (I know it's a silly name, but it evolved from "puppy") went on his journey into the unknown last October 8th. He was my best friend and companion for 10 years. I'm a clingy person (as far as introverts go) and he was a clingy pup, so we were inseparable. He was like an extension of me or maybe I of him. We did everything together: we played, we cuddled, we ate, we watched TV, we slept. He always made me happy and loved me unconditionally. Therefore, I'm deeply sorry for your loss, Jason! I know how much it hurts to lose a co-pilot. The hardest thing about having a co-pilot is having to say...goodbye 😢. Even though I still miss him greatly (you'll have good days and bad), I still feel PoopPoops is with me when I need him. Sometimes I hear his bark in my head. Sometimes he visits me in my dreams and tells me he's okay (he doesn't talk with words, I just know him). So I’m sure your co-pilot is still with you, Jason. He's in your heart and in your memories. He's grateful for the life you gave him and the love you shared. He wants you to be happy and healthy. Remember to try and take care of yourself. It will be okay, it will take time, but it will be okay. 🙏

You know, a lot of these families living in big houses aren't necessarily rich. It just so happens you could afford to raise a family on one full-time job back then. People having to stuff themselves into small apartments and work two full time jobs just to make ends meet is something that developed over the last three decades. You can't assume things now are as they've always been.
I'm glad somebody pointed this out! Heck, when I came along in '64 (as the 6th child in the family), Daddy was in the Navy & Momma was a stay-at-home wife/mother...the norm back then.
We lived in a 3-story home in a decent neighborhood near Washington, DC...had one older sedan & bought a new VW bus, went on nice yearly vacations, etc. Daddy, as sole breadwinner, made $6,000/year!!
Life was sooo different back then, people nowadays honestly can't even imagine it. *sighs*
What's sad is that I raised my daughter as a single parent in the '80s and life was still so different from today's world!
30 years ago when we were low income, my mom was always telling me that most people are living the way we did and that we were doing just fine but somehow I always knew in the subconscious that someone doesn't like the fact that the masses could do just fine
I could afford an apartment in NYC in the 80s. I cant afford to go back now.
Especially if you know how to fix up places. My parents bought a 100 year old house in a borderline neighborhood. One side of the tracks was really poor and suspect and the other was really rich. But the front door wasn't even attacked, there was a huge bee-hive in the house. It needed a new roof and plumbing issue. Kind of like the house from the Tom Hanks film The Money Pit but not nearly as nice. But they knew people that knew roofing etc.. and fixed it up themselves. Those houses don't exist anymore, at least in nice neighborhoods. The banks buy everything up making the housing prices rise.

There's really no genre for this film. That's the remarkable thing about this film. It's just what I like to call pure cinema. It's why we go to the movies and love movies. It's why we love movies. Simply a masterpiece of a film. There's a reason why it is the hallmark film the 80s. When we watched it the theater the theater clapped and cheered and cried at the end like I've never seen (only Titanic and Top Gun: Maverick were similar). People just realized they saw something special.

John was Drew's grandfather, but it was John's brother Lionel (Drew's Great Uncle) who played the villainous Mr. Potter. And Drew's character in *ET* is Gertie (short for Gertrude), not Bertie.

When they came out the house they could've taken the sheet off of him and had him walk around as himself even though it's Halloween. People would think some kid is wearing a neat costume. That's what I would've done.

E.T. is probably the greatest children's movie of all time. Everytime E.T. leaves and tells the boy in the movie "I'll be right here" at the end it always makes me want to cry. They're never be another movie like it. And God forbid, they dare try to remake this masterpiece...
My grandma loved this movie so much she took me to see it three times in one week when it came out.
I consider this a family film. A lost art nowadays. movies the whole family can enjoy.

16:17 The oil in natural unprocessed peanut butter in a jar separates from the peanut butter after a while if it’s not refrigerated. Back in 1982, natural peanut butter was still fairly new in the marketplace and popular. Since then they’ve found ways to prevent the oil from separating without putting the peanut butter through all the processes they do for their usual peanut butters, but if you go to a natural food store like Whole Foods or Sprouts and grind your own peanut butter or almond butter it should be refrigerated to keep it fresh longer and also to prevent the oil from separating.

THEY were written as M7MS IN THE ORIGINAL SCRIPTBUTM7Ms were afraid to associate with a monster movie so Spielberg hooked up with Reeses instead....and that's when Reeses became really big. In the book E.T. thought of those as energy pills. That's why he was eating them.

There are members of E.T.s species in the Galacic Senate in Star Wars Episide III.
E.T. in this movie seems to recognize Yodas species (at the Halloween scene).
E.T. seems to have supernatural powers (healing others, making bikes fly).
Theory:
E.T. and Star Wars take place in the same universe.
E.T. seems to be force sensitive, may even be a kind of explorer of the Jedi order.
I've put PB in the fridge when living in an area is especially tenacious bugs. Bread too... i remember when i went to Hawaii as a kid and we put bread and peanut butter in the hotel cabinet, and the bugs got into through the threads of the peanut butter and went in and died, same thing with the bread...

That one is truly an unforgettable film and highly recommended.

I watch a lot of reaction channels. Ole boy has many advantages over his fellow reactors cuter dogs, better jokes, great Detroit disses. The thing he has over all of them in my opinion is that there's a lot of that good Ole WV country boy in him and he displays it in the sincerity he shows when he's speaking kindness to his subscribers. I'm so glad he's a part of my free time internet viewing. Don't ever change big homie.
