This is a long-awaited video since so many of you have asked me to watch it. It didn't disappoint! Loved learning more about their childhoods, careers, and rivalry. The biggest thing I learned was how much of a rivalry Ronaldo and Messi had playing in Spain together - I had no idea! It's sad to think of their careers coming to an end, but it's been a great couple of decades for the world of football! Who will be the next hotshot to take over?

Great video SoGal ... two exceptional players & too difficult to choose one over the other ... I would have liked to see Messi prove himself in the English Premier league, season after season, like Ronaldo did (unfortunately for us Manchester City supporters !😂) ... BUT ... if I had to choose one, it would be Messi due to obvious skill & him being so humble, like you noticed in the video. As good as he is, Ronaldo's arrogance and ego spoil it for me (nothing to do with him playing for Man Utd, honest !😂) ... I can't see there being a rivalry to match this one for a while .

"El Clasico" isn't related to the Copa Del Rey. It's the name given to any game that Real Madrid and Barca play against each other. The Barcelona vs Real Madrid fixture is extremely historically and politically charged making it one of the biggest rivalries in football. Many other rivalries have similar names. For example games of Bayern vs Dortmund (2 of the biggest clubs in Germany) are termed "Der Klassiker" etc.

the last images of Ronaldo playing for Sporting (green/white kit) were against Man Utd on a friendly. Ronaldo started for Sporting's professional team before he turned 18. After that friendly, Sir Alex Ferguson, Man Utd coach at the time, urged to sign him from Sporting. It was a very nice time to see as a spectator and as a football lover because to see the two best players of the time being rivals, competing in the two rival clubs of the same country in a very competitive league, and competing at the same time throughout Europe for international titles, they grew as players and matured as people at that demanding level being watched by the whole world. The press sold more of the rivalry that they had in sports, but not at the personal level that the journalists took and inflated the atmosphere. Both are great players and are already on the decline in the final years of their careers and are still going strong. No longer with the explosion of the years of youth, but with the level of maturity that gave them having polished themselves and being more exquisite, making their teammates play and shine, more in the case of Messi. Last chance for to lift the World Cup for Messi.

Ok, regarding Cristiano Ronaldo and the academies, he is from Madeira where he started playing football before being scouted by Sporting Club de Portugal (commonly known as Spoting Lisbon) to play for their youth team. The details vary but academies can be seen as a mix of boarding school and development tank. Depending on the local legal ages, usually 15 to 17, they might then get offered a professional contract and be sent to play for another club as a loan or if they are that good they may start playing in the senior team.
Ronaldo made his senior debut in 2002 with Sporting at age 17.
In 2003 Sporting played a friendly match with Manchester United to unveil their mew stadium. Cristiano at that time was already under observation from some of the major teams in Europe, but his performance in that game was so good Alex Ferguson pushed to by his contract immediately.

    1. Ronaldo don't moved to Portugal per se. He was born in relatively distant island Madeira and moved to mainland Portugal, precisely to capitol Lisbon to play in Sporting. That's the team in white-dark green horizontal strips, not to be mistaken with Celtic who plays in white-grass green horizontal stripes and also appears in this video.
    2. Copa del Rey (Cup of King or maybe King's Cup) is annual cup of Spain and it is not related to
    3. El Clasico (The Classic) it's nickname for matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Lot of long lasting derby has it's own nicknames like "Old Firm Derby" - Celtic vs Rangers, "Derby della Due Sicilie" - Napoli vs Palermo, "Revierderby" = Dortmund vs Schalke, "Wielkie Derby Śląska" - Ruch Chorzów vs Górnik Zabrze. You must be also cautious not to mistake "El Clasico" with "Der Klassiker" - Dortmund vs Bayern, "Le Classique" - PSG vs Marseille or "Superclasico" - Boca Juniors vs River Plate.
    4. In football one firm can sponsor more than one team. "Fly Emirates" besides Real Madrid appear for example on Arsenal jerseys. That isn't also unusual for teams from one league to have same sponsor - currently Everton and Aston Villa both have company called Cazoo. But don't get adjusted because main sponsor usually change every few years. Situations like Inter / Pirelli cooperation for 27 years are rare exception.

The Messi-Ronaldo era for dominance in Spanish football lasted from 2009-2018, when Ronaldo left Real Madrid to join Juventus. While you can argue forever about who had better control of the ball at their feet, Ronaldo’s heading ability was amazing he could jump high and just stay up there, amazing hang time. Off the pitch, Messi appeared to have a quite soft and humble personality.

@@stefano9047 Messi plays with the advantage of being short and small (physically weak). If you push him slightly he goes on the floor and the ref with signal foul, representing a goal opportunity if the foul is given around the penalty box. If you touch Ronaldo with same strengh he does not even feel it and therefore he collects less fouls. This along a whole season makes a big difference.
Messi is a zero with the headers, for obvious reason.
Conclusion : Ronaldo is a much more complete player.

10:52 Messi is La Masia (FC Barcelona Youth Academy) graduates, La masia is one of the best football youth academy in the world. Produced a lot of world class players in early 2000's such as Xavi, Iniesta, Messi. Young players In youth football academy they not just train, they also play against other youth academies in youth football league, each country in the world have their own youth football league, every youth league split into age of group, for example Under 20 league, U19, U18, U17, go down till U10 etc...
Every football clubs in the world have their own youth academy. And some of the best football academies in the world such as barcelona, ajax, dortmund, bayern, etc. have a lot of young players from around the world in their academies, so its a normal thing in football and there is a lot of case similar to messi who leave their country at young age and go to other country for playing football. Because football is international sport, so many competitions, so many players from around the world, every players in the world wants to go to europe, because the best academies and competitions is in europe, and is a normal thing to see one team have a lot of foreign players in their squad, especially top clubs in europe.
And FYI you also can see some young footballers in international levels, best young footballers in the world will represent their youth national teams in the FIFA World Cup U20 and World Cup U17. In World cup U17 you will see a lot of young players from football academy, and i remember watch 17 y.o Leo Messi in international stage when he plays with argentina U20 NT in 2005 U20 world cup.

Good afternoon, I got to know your channel here on CZcams, it's been a few weeks now and I'm really enjoying it, especially the videos about football, a sport that I'm passionate about. After watching this video above and seeing your reactions, I have a few things to say. These two soccer stars really are on another level, maybe we can have players as good and competitive as them or even more in the future, but for now, enjoying these two playing is what should happen. To give you an idea, the GREATEST player of all time for many people, Pelé, played at a high level, we can say that for 12 years of his career, and this is already something great. But Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, are at a high level for a whopping 14 years or so, this is simply unique in football history, not only for their longevity, because as Cristiano Ronaldo commented during the video, most football players can do it. keep playing at a high level for less than 10 years, sometimes even half that. And they've been playing in great quality for almost 15 years, and another unique point between these two is the rivalry, never in the history of football have two players simultaneously playing at such a high level fighting for the same things they're fighting for. Anyway, Messi is my favorite player for years, but I admit that Cristiano Ronaldo was and still is a great player too.
They may still have a few more years of career ahead of them, maybe 4, 5 years yet, or a little less, but we should enjoy them, while still showing their skills and great plays in the fields where their genius parade.

Hi, basically there are 5 big leagues, Premier League-English 1st Division, LaLiga-Spanish 1st Division, Bundesliga-German 1st division, Serie A-Italian 1st division and Ligue 1-French 1st division. These are the biggest leagues that the best players play in. Most of the time the big players start of in small leagues where they don’t get payed a lot and then the big clubs come and swoop them up bc everyone wants to play in a top 5 leagues. Basically all the leagues aren’t on the same level, some are big and famous and some aren’t which is why Messi went to Barcelona then PSG and why Ronaldo went Man U, Real Madrid and then Juventus. The copa del ray is a domestic club competition with all of the division of Spanish football playing and getting knocked out until u get to the final. Every top country has this, for example England has the Carabao Cup and the Fa Cup.
    Hope it helped :)

One of the main differences between Messi and Ronaldo is that Ronaldo club challenges have been much harder to achieve than Messi. Ronaldo joined United when Arsenal and Chelsea were dominating. He had to help the club form a squad to win the league and end up European Champion. Then he went to Real Madrid who were being absolutely dominated by Barcelona and had to adapt to a new team and make them competitive again in Spain and Europe. He then went on to Juventus trying to help another historic club to regain European greatness but it did not work. Now at 36 he went back to his United origins to help them again regain competitiveness in the best league of all.
Messi? He was brought up by Barça and played there all his life. Never had to adapt to anything and everything became centered around him. He spent 18 years in absolute comfort zone and when he had to leave, he went to the farmers league join a club of mercenaries who have spent Billions buying all talent they can in a desperate attempt to win the champions league.
As great as Messi is, and don't get me wrong, he is insanely good, Ronaldo is another kind of competitive beast and history WILL remember that. Ronaldo would have never joined a super team playing in boring lower level league for the sake of money and cheap shots at wining the Champions League. Instead, he gave us a bit of romance and remained faithful to ManUnited.

When Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Manchester United(English Club) and Messi made his debut in FC Barcelona(Spanish Club), both showcased their talent and showed the world they are the up and coming players to watch out for.
Ronaldo and Messi eventually met as Man Utd and Barcelona player in the UCL. It was the height of their rookie years, or as the next generational talents in football. And thus the Ronaldo-Messi rivalry and era was born.
After Ronaldo/Man Utd lost to Messi/Barcelona, Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid(Spanish Club). Enter El Clasico.
El Clasico is the rivalry between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. So for me Ronaldo moving to Real Madrid is such a great move, El clasico is already highly anticipated and Ronaldo moving to Madrid made it even better. Plus the world gets to see Ronaldo-Messi matches more often as both of them are in the same league. Here they were able to exchange goals and wins and losses. It was really and amazing era.

The only thing they have in common is they are the best at what they do. Ronaldo scores very important goals, Messi also scores goals but does so much more. It's impossible to say one is better than the other because both are the best.

They won a lot of Champions League too. Ronaldo has 5 and Messi 4. Ballon D´OR is 6-5 for Messi.
They both got similar wages, the difference is that Ronaldo was bough by others clubs that spent millions to get him, Messi just stayed at Barcelona.
Clubs from England, Italy, Spain, Germany just buy the best players from other countries, they got more money and the better teams. That´s why Ronaldo left Portugal at 17

The way Champions league work in the US, to watch them they are on Tuesday or Wednesday 10am or 12pm pacific time. I was a teenager in high school and there was no way the school would allow us to watch it. At the time Wifi and phone data were still limited, my friends and I all skipped school that day to meet up and watch the game at one of our friends house, some rooted for Ronaldo but the majority were hoping Messi would win. To this day that Messi header is one of the most incredible goals I’ve seen.

Ronaldo played for Sporting Lisbon (one of the big three in Portugal). He signed for Man United after he tore their full backs apart in a friendly match and played there until signing for Real Madrid. He then went on to Juventus where he is currently playing.
Messi played for Newell's in Argentina and moved to Barcelona where he played until this year. I can't remember the exact details but I think they paid for some treatment to help with the growth hormone issue as part of his deal.
The copa del rey (the king's cup) is Spain's knockout cup tournament (like the FA Cup in England). Real Madrid have historically had the better of Barcelona but during this period Barca were the best team on the planet so it was harder for them.

So is not always scouting young players in youth academy... but it all depends how the policy of the transfer of the club works.. each club have their own scouting style and transfer policy systems.

Just a couple tidbits about Ronaldo which may interest you :)
Despite his media personality, he is actually very private and incredibly loyal to his family and friends. As you could see in this video, he obviously has no issues with showing his kid Messi and he often says his kid wants to play like Messi and he laughs about it. Its like...he just wants to be a leader on the pitch so he pulls all the lights on him to take charge. That´s his style.
Another interesting thing about him is that he is obsessed with being great at whatever he does. So, if he decides to play ping pong with you, he will practice hours long so he is sure to be good at it. He just has that natural drive to push himself to the top.
As a teammate, pretty much everyone who has shared a team with him respects and admires him. He is the kind of guy who will be the first early in the morning and the last late evening. Plus, despite being a star, he will come forward to greet all young players and help them feel welcome. He also has incredible amounts of respect for the Man Utd coach who supported him and allowed him to reach stardom. He always says Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father to him and you can find videos showing glimpses of their relationship. Remarkably, a very beautiful video is after Portugal won European Champions in 2016.....sir Alex was in the stands watching the players climb to get the medals....he was greeting all players he had coached at United and when it comes to Ronaldo.....you should see their reaction. Its really a father / son embrace. Full of pride on the father side and recognition on the son :)
Ronaldo is also very well known for doing a ton of charity back in Portugal. He supports hospitals and sometimes pays expensive treatments to people in need. He tries to not be very public about it but some of the stories end up being known because some of the people he helped do tell about it ;)
There is no doubt he is a complex character. I dare say you do not want to be his opponent at anything because he is built to destroy opposition.
But he is also very nurturing to people around him and incredibly loyal to his close family. They used to be a very poor family by USA standards....even poor by portuguese standards. And the whole family pretty much lives with his money. You can also notice, if you follow him more often, that he will side with his mother in public as much as she wants. His mother...she is....not the most elegant ever. She too shows that she comes from poor origins and just likes to flash money around lol But...hey....what would you do if you were once very poor and now can enjoy everything. If the lady likes to flash expensive stuff, let her enjoy :)
They are really very simple, very human. They do not try to pose as politically correct or perfect people. They fully embrace who they are and be done with it.
Another interesting family side is that Ronaldo had his first kid from an unknown mother. To this day, none ever managed to get that secret. Obviously the kid is with him and has been so since ever. But none ever managed to find who is the mother. Now...one is free to think whatever about it. What surprises me is how loyal everyone needs to be in that family so that more then 10 years have passed and the media could not get the secret. Its different for sure. He has married since and has more kids from his official wife. The first kid seems to go along very well with the step mom and his extended family. Its weird but they seem to manage it as well as possible.

Transfers happen a little differently in Europe compared to in the states. Teams scout all over the world for players to sign and as long as a transfer window is open in the countries involved in the deal, transfers can happen. Player Trades, whilst common in the US, are bascially nonexistent in Europe. Instead Team A would pay a "transfer fee" to Team B in order to get the right to let the player join their team.

As you surely already know, each nation has two simultaneous tournaments. Here in Italy we call them: Championship (La Serie A) and Coppa (La coppa Italia). Even with other names, the formula is the same in almost all other countries. The Championships are certainly a priority for the teams as at the end of the season it is from the championship that the rank of a team is established, whoever wins the championship participates in the CL, the top positions (depending on the rank of the nation) participate in the Europa league, the last ones go back to the lower series and therefore it is usually preferred to neglect the cup. Except as the cup always has a knockout formula (if you lose you are out) as you get closer to the final the cup also increases in importance. Obviously the aim of a club is to collect as much money as possible and the more tournaments you play and the greater the proceeds among the public, TV and sponsors. On the other hand, the more games you play in the season, the higher the risk of making players tired, the risk of injuries etc. In the championships each team meets all the other teams (in the same series) twice, in the cups instead many more teams access; Example for Italy: All Serie A, all Serie B, 4 teams from Serie C that are selected through a preventive mini tournament among the best of each Serie C group. However, at the end of the season there is a further match between the championship winning team and the cup winner. Here in Italy that trophy is called: "Supercoppa Italiana" while in Spain it is the coppa del Rey. El classico, on the other hand, is simply the name that the single match R.Madrid - Barcellona has taken over the years, the press tends to invent names for those particular matches that often recur and that have an importance for the historical value of the two teams involved, for example the Derbys (when both teams are from the same city) but also for historical rivalries.
