Mary Hopkin Eurovision 1970 "Knock Knock, Who's There" (NFe2 remake re-sync'd)

  • This is my edit from a few different sources, in order to show Mary's film intro, her performance plus the final winner, Dana, with Mary. This is the live version (different to the Apple record) complete with the intro film and 2 short pieces of Mary with Dana backstage as the votes were being counted and it was becoming obvious that Dana would win. Dana won with " All Kinds Of Everything"... a song which actually could have suited Mary's voice too....I've re-synch'd this, as someone let me know it was faulty....enjoy!

I love old Eurovision. I'm a 16-year-old teenager living in the US, but I've fallen in love with these old songs. Tom Pillibi, Nous Les Amourex, Dansevise, Poupee-du-cire Poupee-du-son, Nygammal Vals, Knock Knock, Waterloo, Ding-A-Dong, Un Deux Trois, are just some of my favorite songs ❤.

I agree, Dana and Mary were fantastic.
Being Welsh myself, I remember it being a great year for the Celtic nations musically, on the world stage.
There is not enough Celtic influence in British music these days, sadly.
It has such lovely melody and harmonies in keys that make a change from the usual stuff.

I have the same experience ! This was my first live Eurovision Songcontest and it had a deep impact in my childhood ( being 10 years old ). My favourite song was Waterman by the Dutch Hearts of Soul but their performance was disappointing. I must have wept when these girls of Indonesian origin ( same as mine ) did not win at all. Looking back years later Dana was the perfect winner, Mary second best.

I remember Mary winning Opportunity Knocks, (a talent show from the 1960s and 70s) on UK TV, Twiggy saw her on the show, and phoned up Paul McCartney, the rest is history, McCartney, signed Mary for Apple records, produced her big hit, 'Those Were The Days' , and wrote the song 'goodbye' for her, she was a fantastic singer and a very good looking girl. The 60s was a fantastic time for music, lam so glad I lived through those years.

Yes, but Israel joined in 1973. Here's some more info I found...."THE RIGHT to participate in the contest is contingent on membership of the European Broadcasting Union. The statutes of the Union limit membership "primarily ... to organisations in the European Broadcasting Area. This area, as defined by the International Telecommunications Union, extends from the Atlantic to the meridian 40 deg E. It is bounded on the south by the 30th parallel." Jerusalem, the official headquarters of Israeli Television, is 35 deg E, and on the 32nd parallel. This definition also allows for participation by Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, the Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia. Israeli participation deters these countries on a point of principle, although Morocco did enter in 1980 when Israel withdrew for Passover."...interesting....

Hard to believe it was half a century ago , you needed real talent back then unlike today when computer software can produce a generic and soulless sound that attempts to make up for the performers lack of ability. Songs were much simpler and had so much charm and innocence about them along with an original melody , the use of actual instruments and meaningful lyrics , sadly these days the show is tediously long with the same countries voting for each other regardless of how good the song is and it's more 'style' over substance , predictable dance routines and banal repetitive beats that is so ubiquitous in music nowadays. Thankfully we don't take Eurovision too seriously as i was looking forward to the UK coming last this year thanks to Brexit !.

I was only 10 when this was our UK Eurovision entry. To think Mary was only 20 then. She totally should have won that year but was robbed as it's a much better song than Dana's in my opinion. It happens to be the very first single I ever bought though so it's kinda special for me. Everyone remembers their first record purchase don't they? Of course Mary went onto marry the brilliant producer Tony Visconti. Mid 70's & my favourite band was Sparks. Mary sang a beautiful version of one of their big hits 'Never turn you back on mother earth' & Tony also produced Sparks' '76 album 'Indiscreet'. Good to know they both have good taste anyway. Just a bit of useless information there....LOL.

Is it true that Mary didn`t like this song ? , if that is so she followed Sandie Shaw and Lulu ,which is a shame as I liked all of them !!

Yeah... pretty sure I read her stating that she didn't like it at all...but that shows what a consummate professional she is....you couldn't tell from her performance 😁

Good story, but fake news. Ireland gave the United Kingdom and France joint top votes that year.

U know Dana is British, she was born in London and grew up in Northern Ireland but chose to represent Ireland. Dana has one thing Mary did not a total sense of innocence, May was excellent and very good but Dana edged it just a bit.
