Just to clarify, Alaska and Sharon broke up early in 2013 but didn't announce until December of that year. In Alaska's book, she describes a relationship that can only be categorized as abusive. In addition, Sharon repeated cheated on Alaska, threatened people if they told Alaska (including Alaska's best friend) and started another relationship with someone without Alaska's knowledge, which eventually was why Sharon left. I learned first hand just how insanely much they edit the queens when I met Daya Betty at a meet and greet. I had this preconceived idea that she was going to be unenjoyable because of the way they edited her on her season. I was the least excited to meet her out of all of the girls there and I left wanting to see her again the most. She was the sweetest queen out of every other one in that room trying to make me feel better cause I was starstruck asf (i have really bad anxiety including social anxiety) so I didn’t even know what to say and she instantly jumped in to talk to me and no other queen did that. She told me she loved my nails and I told her I had made them myself and she was so impressed and just feeling seen by her was so sweet and made my whole night. It's interesting how that season had a storyline where there was a rivalry between Daya and Jasmine Kennedie, and that Daya was shown as the villain of the two. There's a pre-season video where they talk about season superlatives, like who's the sweetheart, who's the diva, and so on. When they get to who the drama of the season is, just about everyone says Jasmine, yet NO one says Daya. So it goes to show Daya was likely a very different person on set, and that there's probably an edit somewhere that portrays Jasmine as much worse than the victim edit she got on the show. And you can tell how much the edit upset Daya during the reunion episode.

Daya definitely got the raw end of the deal with that edit, but peraonally I don't even realize she was supposed to be a "villain" while watching the season. She was one of my favorite queens of the season and I could see her sincerity. I felt like she didn't say anything that out of line, especially with the understanding she's in a stressful, competitive situation. Maybe she didn't word it as nicely as she could have, but I could definitely understand the feeling that you're doing all you can and delivering but feeling stuck, while two others you're competing with are doing more poorly than others at a variety of things, but the thing they excel at happens to be the thing that saves you. Queens have said far worse to each other over the years.

I find the whole “using swastikas as part of an edgy look” thing so frustrating. It dates back to the 1970s when early Vivienne Westwood was dressing the Sex Pistols in swastikas for the exact same reason - for shock factor. Fast forward to two years later and the entire UK punk scene was flooded with genuine neo-nazis because the swastika tee had been so trendified that it created a safer space for them to express their bigotry. Vivienne Westwood, despite being very left-wing and an activist, still says she doesn’t regret using the symbol.
The widespread use of such recognisable and loaded imagery is always going to be harmful, no matter whether the intent behind it is simply irony. And it begs the question too - is shock factor really useful, interesting or intellectual if it’s only punching down? I’d say it’s just lazy and tired.

I was so mad when I saw this.
I’m an Israeli Jew, and our Holocaust Memorial Day was only a few weeks ago.
My family and I dug into old records and YadVashem witness records to find out what happened to my father’s father side of the family, since it was the only side we didnt know.
My great grandfather lost both of his sisters. One was murdered in Auschweitz when she was 20, the other was murdered when she was 17- we don’t know where or how.
His parents were put on a train to fuck knows where and were murdered in a mass shooting immediately as they got off. My great grandfather’s only surviving relative was his brother (and they never spoke again after the Holocaust).
My great grandmother lost her older sister in Auschweitz- she was around 22. Her first husband died in the Shanghai ghetto along with her first child. We couldn’t find the child’s name. Her father was sent to Buchenwald and survived there for FOUR YEARS in his 60s. If you know anything about Buchenwald, NO ONE survives for that long. His witness paper said he was killed by being gassed in Theresienstadt, but there were no gas chambers in that ghetto, so we don’t know how he died. My great grandmother’s only surviving relative was her mother. Not even her son or first husband made it out.
That’s only my grandfather’s family. It continues on and on and on and on and it gets so much worse and this shit is not funny. I almost threw up when I saw the swastika. I would go up to these fuckers and I’d shove a copy of all of the records confirming my family’s murders up their ass so far it would come out of their mouths but that would be a disgrace to Yitschak A., Fanny, (Unkown) Podbielski, Siegfried, Lisolette, Ruth, Yitzchak F., and Yulia.
I hope these people suck my motherfucking dick so hard that they choke to death. You cannot at all make this into a fashion statement.

That reminds me of a story I read about a bartender who chased a punk out before they even had a chance to order and a customer asked why. The bartender said they'd had a bunch of neo Nazi subtle symbols on their outfit and that you have to deal with that sort immediately. Because if they feel safe then next time they'll bring their friends, and they'll bring their friends, and next thing you know you're running a neo Nazi bar. It's a good example of how tolerating intolerance is a slippery slope, and you need to make sure that sort of person knows they aren't welcome or supported.
Of course, there are absolutely times when a person can't confront someone without putting themselves at risk (like a trans person confronting a violent transphobe, for example) and it's understandable that sometimes survival is more important than immediately speaking out when you don't have the privilege to do so safely. But whenever possible you really gotta nip that shit in the bud.
There are still neo Nazis contaminating the punk scene, because they werent kicked out fast or hard enough. Anyone who owns black doc martins still needs to learn what different lace colors represent in order to avoid unintentionally seeming to support awful things.
Screw nazis and the alt right, and screw what they're trying to do in the USA again with pushing for more fascism, suppressing "critical race theory" history lessons, fighting for and in some cases succeeding to get drag bans and anti trans laws passed, etc.
Trans/queer and disabled people were some of the first to be targeted in Germany, along with Jewish and Romani people. I don't understand how people can't see the pattern repeating.

This season was my intro to drag, not just drag race, but drag. As a weirdo alt kid who was coming to terms with my own identity, I really loved Sharon and quickly adopted her as "my" queen. I was so validated in watching someone make polished looks that were also dark and unsettling. I genuinely admired her and cheered her on. Some naive part of me believed that racism and bigotry had no part in drag culture, and just as quickly as Sharon helped expose me to the queer community, she also showed me the dark parts of it too. I truly never saw it coming, and it's really sad that Drag Race would use the naivety of their audience to push someone like Sharon. I know I'm not alone in this experience and I know many have distanced themselves from this community because of the heartbreak they felt by being let down by their fave. What drives me crazy is that the goal of the Georgia Voice interview was to sit down and chat with her in order to determine if she was willing to genuinely apologize and commit to changing her behavior. She could have chosen to actually rehab her image in that moment and regain the respect of folks by saying, 'You're right, the social commentary I was trying to make ended up hurting marginalized groups.' Yet she used the moment to whine about how the glamorous drag queens didn't want her in their spaces because she did alternative drag, completely missing the point. Then when the interviewers left, Sharon claimed they were 'attacking' her and 'barking' at her and then weaponized her white tears to attempt to seem like the victim. Just more racism. I was rooting for her on S4 and unfortunately had bought some merch from her during that time because I didn't know about her use of slurs or swastikas. I absolutely could not support her anymore and threw away her merch after I learned. While that's fair Alaska did get heavily abused, often times you feel like you can't leave n such. Likely she didn't know a lot until she was 2 deep.😊

@@plasmathespaceproto701 If you read her book she would constantly call out and confront sharon at their shows about her behavior but sharon was so verbally abusive and manipulative with alaska at that point that she would threaten her life and career then shove alcohol down her throat and make alaska feel like the guilty one. Like you mentioned she was in too deep after a few months and had pretty much gotten beaten into submission and realized it was the "sharon show" one night when sharon threw a pizza at her and accused her of breaking up with her even though sharon constantly cheated on alaska, and threatened her friends if they told. Alaska had a day job and paid all the bills while working on her drag but was put down by sharon constantly because she is so sensitive and non confrontational sharon would play into that. looking back at the old wow videos of sharon talking about alaska she basically played the relationship aspect to her advantage or interviews together she constantly talked over her.

I'm having a hard time believing that people only found out about this in, what, 2022? I was a senior in high school when s4 came out, it was the first time I ever watched the show, I LOVED her - plus she's from my hometown, so I really rooted for her. When I learned about her behavior I was disgusted and I was done with her, and I'm pretty sure the majority of the Pittsburgh scene blacklisted her ass. I thought that was the case with EVERYONE?? I haven't even heard her name since then! Its really horrific that apparently everyone else just swept it under the rug. Her refusal to say anything definitive or apologize about anything is so unbelievable.
