- There is no denying that 2012 has been a big year for Azealia Banks. With a string of critically-acclaimed releases, a high number of visually demanding music videos, as well as close ties with some of the fashion industry's most prominent designers, the Harlemite made sure that her voice was heard far and beyond this year. Now, Ms. Banks is readying the oft-delayed yet highly anticipated debut album 'Broke With Expensive Taste', due early next year, which is set to further increase her rising reputation on the music scene but also to feature a trend-setting new sound for the future. We spoke to the 21-year old artist during her recent visit in Hong Kong to perform at the music festival Clockenflap and touched upon subjects like her favorite 2012 music release, her surprising opinion on rap music, the effect of branding on a recording artist's career, some details on 'Broke With Expensive Taste'. She's a genius....way ahead of her time
Azealia is a Musical Genius .. She has so much to say! When she finally gets it out it's gonna be one of the most amazing female rap stories
Rihanna saw this interview and named her album lol
She's so smart 😻
I died when she said a lot of gay kids😂😂😂
SHE IS A REAL MUSICIAN!
ANTI's titled was inspired from this interview. Rihanna steals underground artists' sounds & aesthetics
true fact
Wait how?
Ugh I wish she had more interviews. I search for new ones all the time & I've seriously seen them all even the ones where she's on ustream lol I'm just obsessed a bit.
QUEEN
Contemporary jazz! would like to see that happen
Azealia Banks = Azealia Banks
I'm a straight, white, European woman and I love you girl. keep doing your thing, you're a true visionary!
Surprised to hear her thoughts on her rapping and its future.
She seemed a little depressed in the interview. It kinda made me feel as a fan, that her album was never gonna come out. I feel that way now. Like she's just living in the moment. Like She'll eventually give up on rap and go back to doing basic shit. I don't want to see THAT azealia. I don't know.
Cannot wait for her album!
i love her so much
cant wait for her album!
Love Azealia!!!!!!!!!!
thanks bro'
YES.
Amen!
I feel justified in totally loving Azealia Banks with this interview - it's one of her best
AGREED!
I love her so much. I'm ready to be slayed by her album.
I listen to Azealia Banks everyday, never get sick. This is definitely the album of 2012 and she is also the artist of 2012 no joke!
i love her
I think she started rapping to gain greater positions. As in like, the first job that someone ever has is always somewhere crappy like a burger joint or something, but they start there as foundation work then move onto better jobs and end up being in offices. Lana Del Rey openly said that she only started singing so she could earn credit to become a film director. That's what I think Azealia is doing.
Good interview. She just said a lot of things others wont say.
What she said about fashion is so true. Love you AB!
Why does she have a deal? Because she's mad talented. Great lyricist and a great singer. Rap isn't her only 'thing'. In fact a lot of people have dismissed her as a 'rap artist' so I guess she isn't - she's just an artist.
I cant wait until Broke with Expensive Taste drops!
Make that Pipe Dream a Reality AB, you got tha Skills!
best.
See this is why I love her she's trying to bring something new to the world the purpose of an artists job!!!
I fucking cried when I missed her show in Hong Kong because I live in Hong Kong...
Fantasea & 1991 was pure perfection. Can you imagine what her album is gonna sound like?
I'm 14 but not gay ! & I support her music . I love this girl , don't like what she thinks her audiences & fans look like, BUT I still love her ! 2013 is you're year PRETTY AB ! She speaks so well and wise !
please keep rapping azealia!!! you sound better than any girl right now and the female rappers need you! I love your music
Respect.
she is a musical genius
i know she's been talking about not rapping since 212 1st came out, so i'm not to shocked to hear her wanna stop. i'm not sure 2 albums with rapping will happen, but whenever she switches to jazz, i'm sure she'll still be producing quality sound.
thank god i paused when she mentions mykki blanco because holy crap he is dope! and le1f!
What is the last song from this video from the set she was doing?
2 albums? OMG :)
DON'T STOP RAPPING!!!! YOU'RE SO GOOD AT IT!!!!!
Exactly! That depth ;)
But then again, Christina A is half Hispanic...but I most definitely feel you.
Rapping is not "unladylike." Azealia Banks, keep rapping! We need more female rappers
AZEALIA NEVER STOP WITH RAPPING :(
I'M 26 AND A HUGE FAN!!!!!!! ♥
Her interviews have become much better! She's become a lot more mature and well spoken.
Oo contemporary jazz :). She's got such a nice singing voice; quite jazzy so I know she'd be good in that aspect. Ima miss her as a rapper though :(
i like her she's such a beautiful natural girl also
fucking love her!!
She is very grounded, its nice to hear. Well articulated too, nice to see this side behind the often rude music she produces (love it, but lots of swearing etc.)
whats the name of the song she's performing at the beginning? pleaasee!!!
She knows her shit.
Oh yeah, your channel says everything lol
its ur favorite because it has to be ur favorite, you;re an illuminists!!!
She speaks the truth about today's mainstream rappers
azealia and rocky would be a dope collab and couple
What is that last song?
same here
Doing an article on this soon...to her (and several other femcees) straight-up hip-hop is the "Genre of No," forcing strict rules on the sound and dress code, deeming anyone who breaks these "sell-outs".
I see the question is no longer "Can we save hip-hop?" Now it might be "Is hip-hop worth saving?"
She is on point and so interesting. 2013, I have a feeling it is going to be her year. The Rise of the Queen of Rap. I feel it.
One decade later… 🫠
How can someone be this fucking cool?
I love what she said about the generic fashion industry. That was deep. One of the reasons why I admire this woman is because she speaks her mind and doesn't hold back - no sugar coating shit.
does anyone know the song at the end, i have to know the name!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are many more rappers who deserve the title. You know, the originals.
Not those who just merely regurgitate. Even if she is okay.
She said one day, no exact year was told. She said she'd remain loyal to music, probably singing.
Azealia Banks is breaking my heart...saying these things!!! At least rap until your 25!! damn girl!
I love her trap music though when's it's very borough grimey & hood. She sounds so good on them, makes me go back to the 90's in NewYork, That gully type shit.
ACEN? Speechless.
what! how can people in hong kong understand her so easily when even I have trouble?!
I understand what she means by not rapping forever plus she want to pursue an education. I'm proud of her.
Part of the 25 percent!
Cannot WAIT till her album drops. I'm still confused at what she meant by rap being tacky and unladylike.. what?
2 albums??? wow :)
what's the first song????? plzzzzz help
She was clearly the it girl of 2012.
. I hope her album will be good as her mixtape and tbh I listen to 1991, Liquorice, and Fierce the most. I love her and I'm not really a hip hop/pop music fan. Oh and I'm not Gay lol.
Azealia Banks will be the it girl of 2013.
what is the name of the song at the start of this???
out of space
Azealia Banks is the salvation of the rap.
I am 30, not gay and a fan. Keep doing your thing Azealia.
4:14 so accurate
Fuck up the fun is good all it is is drum-lined styled music with rap. The song at the end.
i'm not a big fan of her music but i know she's talented i would never deny that and i'm rooting for her i hope she makes it and kicks nicki minaj out of the spotlight because azealia is smarter, more talented, and way more intriguing than nicki and we need some of that right now. everyone in the industry right now has turned into mindless pop stars and its disappointing considering music used to mean something and these stars are singing about nothing for a paycheck then wasting the money
Well it depends on accent and region to of course. But like usually Asian or Hispanic ( assuming white Hispanic) in US sound more similar to white than black, but you can still sometimes tell they are not white. Also say a woman from London, i find that women from London have deeper voices than women from US, and Asia and those places i cant really say because they are speaking a different language so of course they will sound different.
Im 31, single mother, not gay and I'm a fan...lol
love you azealia
LMAO IM A 14 YEAR OLD GAY KID OOPS
Now you're a 19 year old gay kid??
It's good to connect to your fans early in the career 😂😂
What Album / Mixtape are the songs she's performing on??
Fantasea
x97sfinest thanks.
She is a true artist, I don't care about her album sales she is so talented it scares me! I am happy she is keeping true to her sound and her tune on this album. "Very anti-pop/ anti everything happening"
She said 75%
High Five

This might be the first sober interview I've seen
Rap has been mainstream for decades
She's the only female artist I've heard in awhile that's allowed herself to fully express her future to an interviewer with a real perspective that isn't ran through a PR middleman. She'll quit rap? Fine, I'll stay a fan.
Looking at an artist and not projecting themselves in their career is important. When I heard she wanted to quit rapping I recoiled, but I respected that she wanted to progress and go back to school. I think its admirable.
IA, people don't see it as an opinion but like they try to insert themselves into that opinion and feel like she's making it a public statement. I thought it was distasteful of her to say rap was unladylike. I don't agree w/ it, but that's where she's at with it. People need to understand this!
