Campbell County Modulator MOD-2008 Alternate Wail

- Went out to record one of the Modulators in downtown Newport. I wasn't sure if they'd silent test or not, but turns out they don't: They do alternate wail! Skip to 1:30 for the Modulator. Sirens heard in the background include: 4/5 port Thunderbolt 1000T, chopper level 7 Thunderbolt 1000, possibly other Thunderbolts, some T-128's, an E-Class or two, and 2001(s).

The sound is alternate wail. This sound is used on epws 612, 1212, etc. The siren itself: no idea. Just search "alternate wail siren" and chanses are you will find something thats sounds exactly the same.
It’s amazing that you can hear the Cincinnati sirens from across the river. That ambience was beautiful. If only the thunderbolts were still working.

2004 we're visiting downtown Chicago from California. A wild thunderstorm (even by Chicago standards) blows through. All of the sudden one of these is going off down the street. Totally freaked out my wife.

I heard somewhere that this specific wail is used in places such as Chicago because the different tones (at least one of the frequencies) travels further so there doesn't need to be as many sirens, which seems reasonable to me but I'd like to hear what others have to say on it.

Sounds like the T-Bolt in downtown Cincinnati is still active as well. It's interesting that they're using Alternate Wail for testing now. Last time I was down there for a test a few years ago they were doing Westminster Chime for tests.

@@alexandergrube6437 they do, and if you put a UV controller on a Whelen, they will be able to do it. (I don’t recommend it because it will make the siren life shorter). For example, In Hoover Alabama, they have a Whelen that does hi lo and alt wail.

How does this one siren work does it work with speakers inside the plastic
Raymonthewolf I don’t know, maybe the plastic works like frosty the snowman’s hat.
The cells aren't plastic there formed metal but yes there are speaker drivers inside them
The top 2 dishes contain 4 speakers per dish, with each speaker being able to deliver 100W's of power. The speakers are mounted inside with the driver at the parts where the two dish parts meet, with a horn directed to the center, where the horn changes shape and reflects the sound out from the bottom.
All the speakers (basically one for each direction, North, East, South, West) reflect the sound out through the bottom of the dish, where the megaphonehorn shape on the outside between the dishes serves the purpose of amplifying the sound even further without needing even more powerful speakers and amplifiers.
In the 2008 version the only dish that is not active is the bottom one, and it's there to serve as the bottom part of the horn shape of the middle dish.
We have this siren in two versions in The Netherlands, the 1004 version only has one active dish at the top and one inactive one at the bottom, but the speaker configuration is the same. The Netherlands uses the 1004 in less densely populated (rural) area's where the chances of the siren carrying far enough with just one dish are bigger.
In The Netherlands they are activated through a radio signal of some sort (the poles they are mounted on all have an antenna with a receiver/equipment box either at the bottom of the pole or when it's on a high rise building, near the base of the siren that's usually 1 or 1.5 meters up from the base).
Should you be interested how they look from really close, I have a video from a test of those on my channel with some pictures and video while standing right next to one edited in (I absolutely do NOT want to be next to one of those when it goes off).
We have the same type of siren, but the sound is absolutely different in The Netherlands.
