In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Black and Tan Coonhound that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Hound Dogs
    Weight: 75 to 100 pounds
Height: 23 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10 to 12 years
Large, athletic hunters who work nights, Black and Tan Coonhounds are friendly, easygoing hounds who love company. They are snoozy by the fireside but tenacious when on the trail of the wily raccoon. Black and Tans have an amazingly sensitive nose, long, velvety ears, and a sweet disposition. The coal-black coat features rich tan accents, including the distinctive 'pumpkin seeds' above keenly expressive eyes.
The black and tan coonhound’s instinctive independence makes patient, consistent training a must. That same independence makes the dog prone to take off after an interesting scent. For that reason, it's imperative to keep the dog on a leash outside unless he's in a hunting situation. Vigorous daily exercise is a must. This dog is active and was bred to cover lots of ground with ease.
The black and tan's grooming needs are relatively minimal. Occasional brushing is all that's needed to keep the dog's coat in condition. However, as is the case with all dogs that have large floppy ears, regular ear cleaning is essential to prevent infection. Owners of black and tan coonhounds should consider adding a few bibs to their new dog shopping lists. These dogs drool and slobber.

I lost mine this morning so I’ve been looking up videos of them as puppies. We didn’t get my hound until she was a year old so I’ve never seen a baby b&t coonhound. So beautiful. Rip Diamond I miss you

Does your Black and Tan make an excellent jogging or running companion?
How often do they get distracted by various scents when you take them out for walks?
Do you find it hard to call them off once they have decided to follow a specific scent?
Let us know in the comments below!

No .. I put a tracking collar on em and let em go out the dog box in the woods and run for 12 miles a night lol. You're right about the cold nose.

My dog Leah can pick up a scent (usually squirrels, rabbits and deer) and get easily distracted. Good dog but it took work and a little understanding.

I got into a disagreement with my friend who owns a coonhound. He literally takes his dog to the forest areas and the dog takes off and kills wildlife. My friend told me this like he was proud of him for the killing. Apparently he’s killed a bunch of raccoons etc… even a bobcat. I find this disgusting and totally irresponsible. He claims he can’t make his dog come when he’s on a scent. I told him I don’t want his dog near my animals. What’s gonna keep the dog from killing someone’s cat or smaller dogs. The dog is a big dog over 80 pounds Curious of other coonhound dog owners view on killing wildlife???

I grew up with an “outside dog” that was a black and tan coonhound. I can’t recall anytime I ever saw him take off after anything in the yard. I have a bluetick now, and she’ll start after squirrels at home but is called off easily. I take her on hikes regularly and she does fantastic off leash

My friend made it sound like it’s something in the breed that once they have a scent they block everything else out or something. Glad to hear not the case.
