- In this video, I hope to keep you from making the same mistake that I did when I purchased my aiders for my climbing sticks. I attempt to explain how I messed up so that you can avoid the mistake and purchase the correct aiders for your kit!

Disclaimer: I would only loop the aiders until you can either purchase appropriately spaced steps or until the off-season. I think it should only be used as a short term fix and not a permanent method.

I definitely love my aiders, but I wouldn’t say they are perfect! I’m always looking to make things better or easier or more efficient!

It's really not a dealbreaker, but it's just something to consider when you're doing your measurements and planning your saddle kit..
It starts to get a bit tight towards the end of the season when it's colder and you've got more clothes on.

I built my own sticks and aiders. I’m 6’ I highly recommend not going larger than 17”. Boots and gear, on a really cold day climbing down can be tricky.
I also made my aider w am-steel , but I used 3/8” You need those aider built over kill.
I’m 215 pounds w heavy clothes boot & gear Pushing 300 lbs on coming down. With momentum
Now 3/8” X 4” Like 200pounds per square inch plus, in motion. Better check those cheap 1/4” aider often
Especially if you added them to the upper sticks.

I would definitely always recommend inspecting your gear before and after every use, so I appreciate you suggesting that as well!
I'm 5'8" and with a 17" step spacing on my 3 step aider I can't reach high enough to make the bottom step worth while, so I usually just skip the bottom rung. Then, once on the aider, the steps are just far enough apart that it is difficult to make the next step up the aider, particularly with heavy clothing on. I should have went with 15" or even 14" spacing. After a couple seasons struggling with the 17" spacing, I'll be going to a smaller spacing next year. Aiders are great but you've got to be realistic about what you use. It's just like being able to draw a 75lb bow when you are shooting at the range but can't draw it when it's cold and you're in a tree. You've got to go with what will actually work in the field under real conditions.
I agree! I think people have this obsession with getting and bring the highest in the tree as possible. I’m about your size myself and I have issues with my step spacing as I mentioned in the video. Aiders truly are great, but knowing what you can comfortably span is SUPER IMPORTANT when buying your aiders. Just a suggestion. When undecided on step distance pick up the UltimAider. Completely adjustable with the ability to add and remove steps.
That is a good idea.. In my case, I was so sure of the length (and wrong) that I didn't even bother measuring lol.. I'm going to give your product a look!
Amsteel is so easy to shorten. It’s very hard to lengthen, but you should be able to detach the aider and redo the ends to a shorter length and reattach.
I would definitely need to do that. I haven’t given myself the confidence needed to attempt that fix/repair myself, though

Did the same thing lol I just wrapped the aider around the steps before I climb up . Shortens that 2nd step a bit . Good info though
I made the step naturally a few times before I realized that it was spaced quite a bit further than I ever thought it was!

Can get 17ft with my setup. 3step helium, onstep wide aider. And a 3 step bottem. Plus platforn!
That's a pretty good setup! I've tweaked my rig a bit since the filming of this video, but I think that's the nature of saddle hunting. Always finding ways to improve the setup

I got the 30" hawk sticks and I ordered the hunt arsenal knock off aider on Amazon but I'm going to wrap the step with tape because I think the step might cut through the amsteal
That isn't a bad idea. The edges are a bit harsh, so that's a possibility overtime for sure!
Why would the space between the top aider step and the stick not be around the 17” that you ordered? I get when you step on it it may give an inch or so, but that seems like a much bigger gap than you ordered
I'm not 100% sure on that. I just noticed that the gap is larger in that step than the 2 aider steps are from one another.
I got the same stick and with the versa button 2 step aider and ran into the same problem 😂, still using it tho
Oh I’m definitely still using mine as well, but it is something to be aware of. With that long of a span for your step, I do think it makes it slightly less safe, so I wanted people to be aware of it so they could avoid the same mistake
Great info! Do you see any issue's with "taking up" your extra cord in regards to it maybe wearing and being cut thru by the step itself?
I’m sure over time and lots of use, there will be some sort of wear on it, but Amsteel I think is rated for up to like 800 lbs so it’s quite a sturdy cordage.
@@lifeonthehilltn Amsteel is not designed for "lateral" loading which in a sense is what you are doing by wrapping it around the step. If I am not mistaken, lateral loads on Amsteel reduce it's strength by 30 percent. I know that is still way more than you need but if strands become cut then I would imagine the strength rating would be reduced significantly. I don't even like the way those are designed to be attached normally because it creates a similar loading of the cable.
You may be correct. I’m not certain on the performance rating drop. Honestly, I wasn’t aware of one.
For other safety reasons, I would have only used the looping method to finish the season and order appropriate aiders in the off-season. I’ll have to do some research!

Oh you most definitely can make your own aiders. I personally chose not to just for the simple fact that I had never worked with amsteel before and wanted to leave that to the “professionals” but you are correct that you can make your own.

I use the 30” steps with 20” DIY aiders. Three sticks gets me 24’ easily.
That’s pretty awesome! I can’t make that long of strides, myself. Especially later in the year when I have more layers on.
Three 30" sticks + 20" aiders accounts for 12.5', and I'll give you another 1.5' for the step up to your platform. With only three gaps remaining, how are you accounting for the last 10'? Evenly spaced, that would be three 40" gaps to reach your aiders.
Why don't you just buy the UltimAider it's adjustable?

At this point, I haven’t gotten a new aider yet, but you aren’t the first person to comment and mention ultimaider! I have been checking a few options out and they are definitely on the list
@@lifeonthehilltn fully adjustable step to step length, you can add and remove as many steps as you like, they never move, the foot hole stays wide open, and you can get the pack and play and it packs up real nice. good luck this year.

Why those short sticks suck. If you had the longer ones the top of the stick would be higher to grab and use as leverage to pull yourself up. The shorties are lighter but harder to make bigger steps.
I don’t have the longest of strides, but I definitely see what you mean about leverage at the top. I make it work, but it would be nice to have something slightly higher.
I suppose my fear was moreso of later hunts when I’d have more layers on and likely be less nimble, so I went conservative
