I watched this match with some English guys in England when at university. As per usual, they hardly knew any of the Portuguese players. I remember telling them about rui costa and how amazing a player he is in our league in Italy, but as usual...pure ignorance. England goes 2-0 up and they're laughing. The fight back from Portugal was a thing of sweet beauty.

English always ignores other teams, they regularly think they can beat anyone without doing proper checks on their rivals. And English football is not fluent like pass pass move, no pure dribbler in their team, no skilful players out there like Portugal 🇵🇹, Spain 🇪🇸 and France 🇫🇷. They play like RUGBY 🏉. A very solid game without dribbles

Rui Costa and Figo received a lot of praise and credit but Joao Vieira Pinto was a childhood hero for many portuguese kids playing in the streets and parks back in the day. ⚽♥️ Not the most skillful and with no great physical attributes, very skinny and small for a forward (5ft 7in) but he was gritty, full of passion for the game and he made others around him better. Underrated legend of the game, wish there were more highlight/tribute videos on him here.

In my opinion the best Portugal team that I ever saw was this one at Euro 2000, not being old enough to watch their great 1966 team with Eusebio. I think that this team was better than their teams from later tournaments in 2004 (they wouldn't have lost twice at home to Greece in one month), 2012, 2016 etc. They were excellent at this tournament, well balanced and cohesive all over the pitch, played attractive football and narrowly lost their semi-final against a ridiculously strong French team with Zidane at the peak of his powers.
I like their 2nd goal in this game more than their 1st one, with 20 passes or so, the cross by Rui Costa and the Joao Pinto diving header.

Not best ever chance. They were playing Zidane era world champions 🇫🇷 in semi-final and even if 🇵🇹 got through that game (which they didn't) they would've had to beat another great team when in worse condition than they were vs 🇫🇷.
It was however Portugal's most convincing tournament this century to date. But 2 other teams 🇳🇱 & 🇮🇹 were both unluckier not to win it and both statistically better than 🇵🇹.
🇫🇷 had some luck (not with their knockout route Portugal got to play 🇹🇷 where as France got 🇪🇸 before 🇵🇹 & 🇮🇹) some luck in the games but were still worthy winners, anyone who won the 1996-2012 format were there were just some other teams who were just as worthy who didn't win it was designed to be hard for everyone but also fair format for everyone but the better you performed the greater your reward would be. You couldn't be rewarded for failure like 🇵🇹 were rewarded for failure in 2016 the new messed up format where they avoided playing 🇪🇸 🇮🇹 🇧🇪 🇩🇪 and instead faced loads of major tournament newbies.
