I watched this match with some English guys in England when at university. As per usual, they hardly knew any of the Portuguese players. I remember telling them about rui costa and how amazing a player he is in our league in Italy, but as usual...pure ignorance. England goes 2-0 up and they're laughing. The fight back from Portugal was a thing of sweet beauty.
English always ignores other teams, they regularly think they can beat anyone without doing proper checks on their rivals. And English football is not fluent like pass pass move, no pure dribbler in their team, no skilful players out there like Portugal 🇵🇹, Spain 🇪🇸 and France 🇫🇷. They play like RUGBY 🏉. A very solid game without dribbles
England supporter since 1986. Even though we lost this is still definitely one of the most entertaining games Ive ever seen. That Portuguese team is a beast. So many legendary players.
Figo and Rui Costa🙏💃👍
João Vieira Pinto
Nuno Gomes
Kids these days have no idea how great they were
João Pinto was crazy...
Deflection ...it was a rubbish goal
On second thoughts
Smyth in the guardian exposes it
The header from the Portuguese lad is probably the best I have ever seen in an international game....and I'm English! It was difficult and had no margin for error.
It's so good and flawless in execution it almost doesn't look special. But who has ever really done that? I can't recall seeing such a goal. One of the best headers I've ever seen, international football or not.
@@jeanlundi2141 João Pinto despite his small height was, technically, one of the best aerial players I've ever seen.
The header from João Pinto is insane!!

Rui Costa is one of a kind player. You can sense how the ball is enjoying being under his feet!
Adel Gzyl I totally agree with you! Rui Costa was my favourite Portuguese player at that time. A very talented player with great skills (technique, vision, pass, shot).
Yep Rui Costa 😍
He was a fantastic player - so elegant, so skilful.
Yes man. My childhood hero
As non Benfica fan I have to agree
Rui Costa and Figo received a lot of praise and credit but Joao Vieira Pinto was a childhood hero for many portuguese kids playing in the streets and parks back in the day. ⚽♥️ Not the most skillful and with no great physical attributes, very skinny and small for a forward (5ft 7in) but he was gritty, full of passion for the game and he made others around him better. Underrated legend of the game, wish there were more highlight/tribute videos on him here.
Agreed, Joao Pinto was a legend but unfortunately underrated

Amazing!

I still remember this, watching with my friends back in Dublin. A heartbreaker for England team and the rising era of Portugal Football Team. One of the match to be remembered back in 20years ago. Still a classic until today
a simple time when Portugal's equipment was red shirts and green shorts and not whatever comes to nike mind
Look at England kit and France's ain much better. Nike really have lost their touch over the years. No wonder Man Utd finally ditched them. Adidas is the only big brand left that tries to stay modern.
hahaha muito bom
KaDoxPT !
Fernando Morant italy the best selecion of Europe.england is loserd, world cup 1966 germany the real champion
Nike's equipment are the same for every country they just change the colours, so boring.
In my opinion the best Portugal team that I ever saw was this one at Euro 2000, not being old enough to watch their great 1966 team with Eusebio. I think that this team was better than their teams from later tournaments in 2004 (they wouldn't have lost twice at home to Greece in one month), 2012, 2016 etc. They were excellent at this tournament, well balanced and cohesive all over the pitch, played attractive football and narrowly lost their semi-final against a ridiculously strong French team with Zidane at the peak of his powers.
I like their 2nd goal in this game more than their 1st one, with 20 passes or so, the cross by Rui Costa and the Joao Pinto diving header.
2006 WC was good too.
what a baller Rui Costa was
Do we remember that the result of this match was :
(1) Allan Shearer did not want to play for England ever again...
(2) England manager Kevin Keegan resigned as football manager
(3) Portugal gave us all a lesson on how to continue fighting until the last minute and never give up
It's incredible how much quality every player had back in the day in comparison with today's players.
Not just with portugal but almost every team , Holand , Germany, England, Brazil , Italy , Argentina, etc ... definitely there is something missing nowadays
Exactly! Best era for football, late 90s and early 2000s
Don't agree, the defending was horrible on both sides.
Well this England is the same overrated team from 2010-2016. The only exception is Beckham with his passing, free kicks etc. Everyone else we see here and Gerrard, Lampard, Terry etc overrated.
I watched this game in a pub near Chester. When England went two up it was a carnival, but they did the sitting back England thing and Portugal were very good. I’m a Scot and did a fake Scouse accent at the bar. I don’t enjoy England losing much anymore. But I did then.

Agree, and i am Portuguese!
How are they ‘Greater’ if they’ve achieved less? Probably ‘better’ is the word you are looking for.
jinz0001 it was harder to qualify then, also Rui costs got sent off for his second yellow in the last game when he took too long to walk off the pitch, so we had to play Germany with 10 and didn't qualify.
2000 till 2006 Portugal has a alien team!
GTS The only Portugal team that is comparable is the 2012 euro team tbh
That Portugal was AMAZING!!!
And Rui Costa came back again in 2004 . A fantastic player .
Fantastic side, this Portugal Golden Generation! Also, I always thought Nuno Gomes was underrated.
His problem tbh was the inability of getting himself in unmarked areas. If you watch him he would make runs but into spaces where defenders were a lot of the times.
He was more of a second striker, Portugal always lacked a reall number 9..and sometimes the "inhability" to call players from smaller teams in our league didn't help. Big clubs always lobbied for their players, so they could market them. Nuno Gomes was a good forward, especially at this time, when he was playing in Serie A. I would play him over Pauleta any day of the week.
Portugal's second goal is one of the most amazing goals I've ever seen
Tiki taka before Guardiola. The combination and quality of passing during this game was the best I watched from a Portugal team in 25 years. Until today we didn’t played at this technical level imo.
Brave header Campbell is a big sob
This was by far the best euro I ever seen (second best for me is 1988), the quality of players back then specially France, Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands were simply unbelievable, any of those four teams could win a world cup today very easily..
And England prick
Abel Xavier playing for Portugal is an epic childhood memory :D
Figo the true Portuguese leader & greatest captain his country ever seen. Luis compared to Maradona in terms of leadership & when you’re compared by ANYTHING to the great Diego you must be some hell of a player then 🙌 started the comeback with arguably goal of the tournament & then just run the show. Luis Figo best #7 EVER
How you doing are you not the guy who trolls all the England football video's.
Portugal were so good in this tournament. Unfortunately came at the same time of an unstoppable French team.
This game was unforgetable!

Fell in love with Portugal during this tournament. I will never forget watching this match match live as a 12 year old. When it was 2-0 down I was so anxious and upset and was thinking this cannot be happening, we cannot be eliminated from England like this. When the comeback was happening I went absolutely berserk - Hell yeah! This is unreal! We’re doing this! Named the pet turtle I got as a birthday present that year “Nuno Gomes”. True.... or like now Quaresma & Ronaldo
Scholes and Owen?
you mean two great midfielders??? Spain of course: Iniesta and Xavi or Iniesta and Silva; or France: Zidane and Henry if you mean one great midfielder and striker...Brazil: Rivaldo and Ronaldo. You should be more accurate with your question. It is not clear.
Figo's goal was absolutely gorgeous.
Hardly, Figo blasted his shot straight at the keeper. The only reason it went into the corner like that is because it took a (very lucky) deflection off of the defender.

Rui Costa what a player... once he decided to run the show there was no stopping him. Abel Xavier was really the weak link in that Portugal side. Also Nuno Gomes was brilliant in that tournament but did not quite replicate that kind of form later for Portugal.
Jorge Costa, was not a national team level player eather...the goalkeeper perhaps, because I don't think we had better, execept for younger guys that were inexperienced. Nuno Gomes was good playing with two guys infront, not to play the "big man" in between the defenders. And this strategy was too romantic anyway. Beautifull plays but uneffective...Put any other players in place of this legends and the game would end 5-0 or more lol

England: What a great start to the knockout stage. We are leading against Portugal, and will probably win this game and advance to the semi finals easily.
Rui Costa: Nope!
To be fair, in 2004 portugal was playing at home so they had an entire nation on their side
It wasn't Rui Costa, though he played brilliant in both occasions but in 2004 he came from the bench.. In 2000, Pinto, Figo and Gomes were also important. England has no chance against Portugal. In my opinion England may be competitive against Portugal but the Portuguese of that extra mile of class in its players. Nothing but the truth
you must be a Benfica guy
@@Miguel-nm4tn I wouldn't say no chance. Keep in mind we had players like Beckham, Ferdinand, Cole, Lampard, Gerrad and Rooney on our side. If we just had a manager who could have unlocked all of their full talents then Portugal would be the ones struggling

This game was a huge turning point for Portugal. They added Ronaldo to the mix and they became absolute powerhouses
Joao Pinto s goal is a Real masterpiece😮
In 2000, Portugal was better than in 2016...
And so was Italy, France, Germany...
Germany? Portugal trashed them with their betch team by 3 0 on this tournament.
With no luck
Better individual players, but more grit and never surender attitude in 2016
Actually, no. Fernando Santos’s playstyle is (poorly) defensive, compared to the more open style back in 2000. We could be a more offensive team, if only we had fast middlefielders for possession and playmaking. We don’t. Well, we do. They’re just not on the usual roster.
I remember this game as if it had happened yesterday because it is the best game I have seen to this day.

Joao Pinto's header... one of the greatest goal in football history. A touch of magic. I'm good at football, but... impossible to make it.
As a portuguese man myself, I was thrilled with the victory, but the best goal i've seen in world or european cups was by João Pinto, best flying header i've ever seen! Thanks to the uploader

96 to 06 was the best generation we had in history, much better than Eusebio´s generation or these generation of bottlers who can't even win against Morocco
@@joaotopa3263 well tbh portugal's manager is to blame. wasted this generation
@@urmomsdealer I don't think wasted, most of them are still young and a lot of players like Renato Sanchez, Rafa Silva etc haven't called upon this world cup. Only CR7 and Pepe are gonna surely doubtful to play the nex world cup. Yep, I agree that their coach is the reason why they lose, putting Joao Felix who has wasted a lot of chances againts Morroco instead of Rafael Leao who can match the Morrocan Full-backs
@@urmomsdealer Eh. The Federation is to blame. Antonio Oliveira did well, but when he went to Porto they decided to replace him with Artur Jorge after his miserable stint at Benfica. Humberto Coelho also did well, and I think he deserved to stay longer, but they replaced him with Oliveira again, that this time didn't make a very good showing. Scolari, for as little as I like him also did a good showing. So the issue was the Federation making one terrible choice and then going for the next shiny thing.

Probably the best Portugal team in the history.
This team was Portugal’s best ever chance at winning. Loved it. Breaks my heart
Not best ever chance. They were playing Zidane era world champions 🇫🇷 in semi-final and even if 🇵🇹 got through that game (which they didn't) they would've had to beat another great team when in worse condition than they were vs 🇫🇷.
It was however Portugal's most convincing tournament this century to date. But 2 other teams 🇳🇱 & 🇮🇹 were both unluckier not to win it and both statistically better than 🇵🇹.
🇫🇷 had some luck (not with their knockout route Portugal got to play 🇹🇷 where as France got 🇪🇸 before 🇵🇹 & 🇮🇹) some luck in the games but were still worthy winners, anyone who won the 1996-2012 format were there were just some other teams who were just as worthy who didn't win it was designed to be hard for everyone but also fair format for everyone but the better you performed the greater your reward would be. You couldn't be rewarded for failure like 🇵🇹 were rewarded for failure in 2016 the new messed up format where they avoided playing 🇪🇸 🇮🇹 🇧🇪 🇩🇪 and instead faced loads of major tournament newbies.
