- While asking random people to sing at NAMM, I meet Ryan Woodard. What I learn about Ryan is quite interesting. He deals with Autism which has limited his verbal expression. But he has found his expression through music, which had him be more verbal and more confident in himself. In this video, we sing a song together for the people at NAMM and for the parents who raised him.

Reggie, I’ve been trying to find the words to tell you how grateful I am. When this video was taken never in my wildest dreams did I think this would happen. We are so thankful to you and to hear this conversation (I couldn’t hear from where I was and I try to give Ryan space to speak for himself) just happen organically and you listened… like really listened… with your body language and how you would light up when he spoke of his music. I’m not sure what it was but in this moment I felt so many emotions… love, pride, thankfulness… all of it. I am so grateful you two had this time together. He will forever remember you… and something tells me you’ll remember him as well. All our love to you, Reggie. 🙏

Tears started to roll out of me the moment Ryan started singing. He is pure and innocent in the way he can channel his emotions through the music. A gifted soul indeed. Thank God for all His creations. And also thank you and your wife for being wonderful parents.
Your family and son, are a true inspiration for parents and grandparents, navigating our world of spectrums. ❤Thank you Ryan for sharing your gift.
As always, Reggie is a phenomenal human experience.😊
You have a very special son and because you are obviously such wonderful parents that you have made it possible for this very talented young man to live his dreams. This video brought tears to my eyes. Bless you all and wishing you all a wonderful, healthy and happy life ❤❤❤

Beautiful voice Ryan you give me so much hope for my own little man with autism ❤ thank you for sharing your journey
i'll never understand how people can struggle to speak so much but when they start singing it's the clearest and most refined voice of a professional. blows my mind. absolutely spectacular.
For Ryan it’s because he knows the words he’s going to sing. When he speaks he’s a little unsure and is still learning to put sentences together as I’m sure you heard. But he’s trying and we are working with him. ❤️
❤❤❤💙💙💙
@chaoticlyism651 ~ different parts of the brain: music/singing are not the same processing/expression area as the speaking brain area. It's amazing how intricate the brain is and finds its ways... great question !
@@Blingbling880 I have a little cousin who has autism and he finds it quite hard to communicate and he usually uses his hands to show people what he wants or uses the wrong words to describe what he wants, bear in mind he’s only 6 or 7 so he’s quite far behind Ryan in his development but he is exactly the same as how Ryan was described growing up in this video since my cousin can sing any song perfectly if he wants to. But at the moment a lot of my family are starting to worry as he is at a school and he’s not really doing any work since they don’t really know how to deal with him properly. Also if you have any advice on how to improve his communication skills that would be very much appreciated. He can also read amazingly.
the part of your brain that controls speech is a different part of the brain than what controls singing even though they are both vocal its a different function. another example of this is that you can watch is Cody Lee.
My 46 year old son is autistic also. I was so happy, thrilled, excited to see your son bloom in front of strangers ❣️Fabulous job. God bless him & his awesome parents ❣️
Thank you!!!💙💙💙
Thank you for your kind compliment and wonderful words. It’s comments like this that make my heart grateful. ❤️
The sudden switch from the somewhat awkward cadence of his speech to perfect cadence and control as he started to perform was incredible to witness, you can see how much more natural music feels to him than speech, kinda makes sense he picked that up first. I look forward to inevitably seeing him make his mark on the music world
That awkward cadence of him talking is very likely just a byproduct of him being delayed in speech development until the age of 10. Missing those developmental milestones are a huge, and I mean a HUGE impediment on a child’s overall psychological development. For what it is worth, this guy seems to have managed to come out like a rather very normal guy. Many people are permanently disabled in some aspect of their lives if they miss those milestones. It’s extremely sad. I work with nonverbal children often times in behavioral therapy. The lights are on, but… they’re missing that crucial component of speech which allows a person to connect with others.
I think its not awkward. If i speak english (i am german) , its about the same, (slow, insecure, have to think each word)
@stefanmargraf7878 Yeah that's why I said somewhat awkward, like it's only a little bit off, I wasn't trying to disparage him at all. That slight pause and insecurity like you describe is exactly what I meant
Ozzy Osbourne vibes
As someone with autism, I'd say it's more likely that when speaking he speaks as is natural to him. When singing, me and many autistic people will put more effort into mimicking neurotypicals since music is all about the little sounds
My own autistic son is 15, almost the same age, and this young man makes me so proud!! You are amazing, Ryan!

I wonder what the kids with autism felt, it must have been scary. I became non-verbal when I was ten got out of it just before my 15th birthday its just a combination of problems I can't control nor blame anyone for except myself. It just feels so peaceful and so right to isolate myself back then. Maybe it was the worst case of depression but I hate to think about what kids with autism felt like not being able to communicate.
I'm in the same boat, this video gives me hope. This is beautiful.
❤❤❤❤
As an autistic person, don’t think you or your son is a “failure” if he cannot speak. There are different ways to communicate. Remember, autism isn’t a burden. It’s just part of how someone’s brain works. I’m autistic and proud. Only thing I’d change is how people treat me for it and the prejudice I face. However if your son ends up speaking, good for him.

@@Blingbling880you must be a great mother and your hubby as well must be. I’m sure you’re also extremely proud of your son. I’m 37 and am not autistic but that doesn’t mean this didn’t reach into my heart. We’re all on our own paths and adventures that can some times be very challenging. Having loved ones there as supportive as you has definitely had an impact. Regardless he is a talented young man and has some great pipes. I’m glad he found his passion and that it allowed him to connect with others through it. We all just want people to understand us, we want to connect, and we want to share our joy and passions. I’m not crying, you’re crying. Kidding but seriously, this one made me cry. Mostly because of the beauty of it, but also because of the struggle that came before it and what overcoming that means. Very happy to have come across this performance.
I've met a few people on the spectrum, and that's one thing they share. Whatever their passion, once they engage in it, they are... home. They are doing the right thing, no stress, no anxiety, no difficulty. Circumstances that normally would be very stressful are a mere noise in the background. Optimized people, I'd say. I know this feeling well, makes me wonder whether I was a mild case as well - the standards for diagnosis weren't very good when I was a child...

You can do it to Prince. Ryan brought me to tears today. I love what Reggie is doing with his channel.
Singing has never been something I was good at, but I can tell you that the first time I ever played drums in front of people was one of the most exhilarating experience of my youth. I had only been vocal for a few years and was still very uncomfortable in front of people, but behind that drum kit I felt safe because I could express myself through something else. I always wanted to be able to sing but I know that I'm for sure not good at it.

I'm not autistic but, I have social anxiety...big time. I get what you're saying about singing helping you. It helps me, too. The only songs I can sing in front of other people are the Gospel songs that were born in the fields of slavery. I can't carry a tune with anything else. Ryan is truly amazing. So are you! God bless you, dear.
This was very interesting. You can hear that he seems to a be a bit uncomfortable with normal conversational cadence, but he's exceptionally comfortable with singing and following the rhythm. He's perfectly capable of communicating, just not in the way that most people are used to, but in an equally - if not more - expressive way.
"Eloquencely" said! 😁Thank you so much!!
Yes! As an autistic person we may communicate a bit differently but we are still capable of communicating, connecting, being our own person. Autism isn’t a burden, it’s part of who we are and how our brain works. It has some challenges, but the only thing I’d change is how ignorant people can be about autism. Yes, so impressed with Reggie. He's an awesome communicator and it's amazing that he just knew the song Gravity off the top of his head. He does have quite the repertoire! This is one of my favorite videos!
@@jansheldon6615 He’s amazing in every way for sure.❤️
Amazing!!! Thanks for letting us be amazed by all the folks who sing with you. Keep up the great work.❤❤❤❤
❤
You are amazing bringing out the love in people and encouraging them to shine bless you
Reggie you are a gifted musician but you BIGGEST gift by far is your heartfelt ability to honor people. I have watched many of your videos and you always touch people’s hearts and pay them respect and they feel it. I loved this video so much. God bless you, and I honor you as a person.
Someone needs to make sure John Meyer sees this. He needs to do a song with him on his next album.
@@indigowulf2020 Agree. And/Or next concert. #JohnMeyer
"To honor people" So perfectly put.
You nailed it❤

When he belted "gravity", I went 😯 It's beautiful that Ryan is able to express himself through music where words can't. So much talent.
