      I'm guessing that most of the penalties were from poke checks. Poke checks are just a defensive tool you have to get used to over time. It's very sensitive, because you have to do them at the right time from the right distance. For beginner players I would recommend the defensive skill stick instead by holding down the poke check button. That way, you can control how you move your stick with the right stick and can let go before you touch the opposing player's skates.

    Dear defenders: Crouch blocking in the slot to stop a 2-on-1 or a cross-crease is NOT playing defense. You take yourself completely out of the play and good players pass it right around you for an easy tap-in. Stay on your damn skates and cover the pass receiver. Stick lift him, bump him, or deflect/intercept the pass. Just be ON HIM, not bending over like a moron as they blow by you for the goal. Signed, a goalie who has played way too many drop-ins.

      I understand this is an older comment and I doubt you will even acknowledge this notification if you receive it but as a defenseman who plays somewhat competitively (LG) I do not agree with the blanket statement of “stay on your skates”. If you mainly play drop ins or 3v3 I can easily see how you came to this conclusion as the pass block and dive/block or flat on the ice block, (we’ll just call it the flat block) are often used incorrectly. By incorrectly I mean they are held for too long. In my experience the average player uses the blocks in the correct situation but they hold the action for too long. Not to toot my own horn as that’s not the point of this comment but I would consider myself an above average defenseman in LG and what I think is better than telling defenseman to stay on their skates it to let them know when exactly to time these maneuvers. Defense is fairly simple and a good defenseman should be able to read a 2-on-1 fairly easily if you have put in the hours and seen enough of them. A great defenseman will stay in the passing lane of a 2-on-1 for as long as possible and then go down into the flat block when the only option left for the offensive team is to either take a relatively sharp angle shot, a very limited short side deke, or force a back door pass. I have timed many successful pass blocks over the years and it is hard for me to say a defenseman should never leave his skates. If you have a goalie you can trust and you know he is going to trust you to cover the pass, then by all means go down to block the pass. After all, EA really screwed defensemen this year and didn’t give them a strength to countering pass plays. The tie up animations in front of the net very rarely stick and when they do it often results in a high stick or interference penalty for the defenseman.

      @@tylerray3075 If you take away the passing opportunity, a good goalie will stop the shooter the vast majority of the time. You may be able to do it by dive-blocking, but the vast majority of D men, including in LG, can't. Good players either just skate an extra step and pass around it, or I've even seen them sauce it right over the prone D man.
      I'm not saying either move cannot be useful when applied at the correct time. However, if I had a dollar for every goal scored against me where my D man was couching blocking in the slot while the attackers just laughed, I'd have retired by now. In most situations, I believe it's far more useful to stay on your skates.

    • @americangangsterlock1550
      @americangangsterlock1550 Před 5 lety +3

      Wade Williams you're apart of the plague of why this game isn't competitive as 2009-2013. You could play a drop in and play a real like simulation style. Goalies would love when D men used all their resources. You're just the kind of goalie who blames defense 9/10 for not playing 110% shutdown D. Dumbass
      To the other guy, I agree to a certain extent to what you said here. The issue is that they have taken out the normal blocking engine since the cross over to the new systems. Laying flat will lead you to laying in a opposite direction 90% of the time. There's no doing it right or wrong. Unless you're skating back chasing the play which at that point won't help but you need to be at a 12 o'clock commitment of some right. That won't help against the cross crease which sucks. They have screwed us D man over in this game. The crouch block is only useful when they are behind your own net. In other words it activates that new motion where you can use your stick to cut off the lane if you're swift enough with that tool ( I am). Those timely blocks that you remember from the PS3/Xbox360 days are over. It's already been debunked on the actual EA NHL forum with tons of evidence of past footage. Have you ever noticed well timed blocks now turn into automatic goals? Your best bet if you like blocking high slot or point shots in 6v6 is to stand right in the way without doing anything. The animation of your dude getting blasted with a puck will appear instead but it works. Try it out in versus mode when you face a good opponent who likes to setup in the OZ.
      I still don't agree with the original comment. But not because it's a bad tactic. CPU or human goalie, it doesn't matter. If you're defending a 2v1 than make it a mini breakaway. If your goalie is good than they'll understand right away why you're taking away that passing lane. It doesn't matter if it's your quadrant or not, cover the open man. From there try to play chicken and see if the puck carrier cuts into the middle to low slot. Be ready for either the poke check or to make a big hit. Again they fucked over the D. The shuffle won't work so your guy cutting off a angle will be a challenge.
      As for Stick tie ups. I use to think they were useless but now I actually abuse that. You should flick the hitting button lightly (Right analog stick) if someone is setup in anywhere in between the circles (low slot) Once you get a feel for it you won't be taking any penalties. Those flicks will push the other guy out of position. Also use the stick tie up. Just know that you can't use it if you're behind your man or else it will end up as a high stick penalty.
      I'm really pissed that they got rid of another important block. Remember that animation where a guy would put his skates together and skate towards the puck carrier? It use to involve pressing R1 and L1 before when the laying down was just one button. It was made for mainly forwards to block the point shots. It took 100% skill but it was effective for the D men as well. This game could be so much more than it is now.

    Great video!
    My specialty is defense. I don’t wave the defensive stick. I use it to direct the luck carrier where I want him. So if he’s coming down the boards I’ll ride him all the way down with my stick in position.
    The top offensive players will draw a penalty.
    If I’m covering the luck carrier and we are even. I start my stick away from him and sweep around the front of him and it’s a very successful tactic.

      Hey there! Thanks for watching my videos and supporting me. The boards are definitely tricky to deal with, the best way to play defense against that would be to defend the middle and hope that they stick to the boards, when they do, you hold Y or Triangle to pin them to the boards and give them little hope in doing anything else.

    @TN-gj5zy Před 5 lety

    I know this video is for defense, but I'm having trouble entering my opponent's zone if they play good defense. If they don't come towards me and just stay with me by skating backwards, it feels like I have no options. Somehow my teammates are all covered and I can't get an entry with the puck carrier. I've tried dumping the puck, but haven't had much success as my opponent can usually get there first. Meanwhile, if I try to defend a rush, I'll be right in front of my opponent and he just skates right through me. I've tried using the skill stick as well as adjusting my strategies to have my players come to my end immediately after my opponent gains possession, but it just doesn't seem to work.
    TL;DR: What are good ways to enter the zone, and do you have any extra tips for defending my opponent entering my zone? I was thinking of recording one of my games if that helps.

    • @SkepticHeathen
      @SkepticHeathen Před 5 lety +1

      Don't think in a linear way. Lots of lateral movement and passes before you even get to the blue line will help. Also, north to south passes early in the rush will open up more options as well. Ex: skate to red line, pass back to a defensemen at your blue line, now you have 3 forwards skating up to their blue line with some momentum. One of those 3 forwards will be your best option. Plus this way after zone entry you have options to burn the side, or if you're cut off you'll often have the player cutting to the middle to drop pass/pass back to or the defender entering the zone to go straight back to. If your opponent is blocking those options and you can't burn em on the side then there's a good chance the far side winger will be open for a pass hard around the opponents net.

    • @TN-gj5zy
      @TN-gj5zy Před 5 lety

      Sorry, I might not have elaborated enough on my issues. Whenever I try to pass back to a defenseman or forward who's behind my puck carrier, it just seems like my opponent has all my options covered. I suppose that means I should have an easier time breaking in straight into the zone, but it just doesn't seem to work for me. I'll keep trying different methods and your idea of wrapping it around my opponent's boards. Thanks for the advice!

    • @Brianstormed
      @Brianstormed  Před 5 lety +1

      Definitely look into recording gameplay if you want specific feedback. Kapxis gave great tips on entering the zone quickly and slowly. There is a third option available to you and that's passing it across from one side of the blue line to a forward with momentum entering the zone on the other. The way that I tend to enter the zone is go toward the side where there is less people, and the side where the opposing player is not in control of a skater. Then when you are across the blue line you can go forward and pass back, go forward if there is no resistance, go forward then back and then pass forward, or pass back across as you enter. My next video will cover zone entry but I hope this has helped!
