It's amazing how society makes "saving money" seem "uncool". Spent much of my 20's looking fresh while being broke, in-spite of knowing that my expensive habits were keeping me broke. It took a great deal of not-giving-a-f@$# to actually ignore the comments and opinions of friends and family as I attempted to fix my financial situation. I skipped out on frequent shopping and ordering appetizers and beverages... Instead I opted for free water at restaurants and pre-gammed when going out to bars. Social pressure can be a real b****... Fast forward to today, I've been able to payoff all debt (except my house) and begin my passive income journey. I cannot thank channels like Nate's for the constant encouragement to do what will pay-off, even if peers don't think it's cool. 👍
@@nosolar2023 actually, i am not being punished... saving money is just a means of creating a surplus of money to set aside. I've used the money that I have saved to build and invest in businesses. The stock market has been crashing so I've been investing into dividend paying companies that are getting beaten up. Hopefully it will pay off, but only time will tell.

Good advice! Also don't get involved in gambling or playing the lottery. My parents spent so much money on lottery tickets, it's just such a waste of money!!
We learned to do so many calculations at school, then at college, and nowhere do they teach us how to handle money. Here in Brazil they still believe that to be rich, you need to study. Consumerism got me again after being minimalistic. Clothing has always been something I love. It did create a way to have a timeless but also a fun wardrobe I love now. Also just the quarantine trends throughout this year. I tried a lot of crafts and spent a lot.

Great vid as usual! One thing on buying a house though, when you pay rent you have no return on that money, its gone. When your paying a house, yeah it could be more expensive, but at least (if bought right) you will make a return on your initial investment.

Here's a couple of related items: when buying a house plan on the average maintenance costs to be in the range of 1%-3% of the market value of the house; that's to cover things like repair the roof, pain in and/or out; major appliance's; it does not include yard maintenance, insurance, taxes.... Then there is marriage; most guys don't realize that when they are marrying the are marrying the family as well as the girl; and if that family has never managed to accumulate much wealth they will view your wealth as theirs and want to spend for all sorts of "good causes" like paying their medical bills because they didn't think they would ever need medical insurance.

In this isolation we managed to save money, no going out (all restaurants and shops being closed) and I only bought books for my toddler and food. We cook at home and even not buying more gas for our car every two weeks helped a lot. I am actually decluttering again my wardrobe (it’s rather small but we live in around 55 sqm) after donating and selling a lot in the last couple of years. When I was younger I would never hustle to make more money, I’m 33 soon and after graduating in foreign languages and having no inspiration whatsoever to starting my own business I got a job like everyone else. I follow Jade Darmawangsa and found your channel 2 days ago. Jade’s 19 and she’s absolutely amazing, just like you. She started her own business at 16. I think it’s remarkable and I feel grateful that I can learn from younger generations that have a better understanding of what working smarter means. I live in Europe and I also have this irrational fear of making business mistakes. Make you could do a video on making mistakes and surpassing them? Just a though. I watched lots of your videos and I am watching some more. I actually know I’m learning useful things thanks to you so I see it as an investment.

Hi Nate I follow your videos. I live in Sydney here the cost of living is very very high. I earn less but still managed to save a lot. I work full time but try to earn extra on weekends too. Spending only on what’s required. It helps. Cooking at home, not buying unnecessary stuff and budgeting, extra work on weekends has really made difference 😊
Nate - Thanks for the awesome videos. You are spot on. Healthcare can be a big expense when you get older. I have heard several people say they wish they took better care of their teeth because replacements are so expensive (in the tens of thousands) and painful. As about saving money, you need to have a supreme goal that you really believe in and strive for, or else you won't save any money. Now I have a supreme goal and I save all of my spare money, i even started to cook. In the past, no matter how many videos I watched and how many scary articles about the financial crisis I have read, I didn't manage to save anything.
So true about smoking and drinking excessively, both I don't do or at least drink in minimal quantities, I don't have to wake up the next morning also with a tragic bank balance!

I think I made the mistake of buying a house too early. My husband and I didn’t have enough of a down payment, but we were sick of paying rent. Looking back, I would’ve waited until we were ready and I would’ve insisted on a property with a rentable space.
Travel Agents can be useful in some situations. Sometimes they have access to inclusive offers. Also if your busy person, they can save you time. However I agree you can do it yourself in most cases. Yes I spent a lot of money on delivery. I finally invested in crockpot, and not only do I save a lot of money, but eat healthier. I am also eating much healthier, and I have leftovers and put into meal containers. I also purchased a rice cooker. I have saved a lot money.
There are some travel restrictions in Europe ATM, just be sure to check everything before going places in Europe because some cities may be closed or restricted for tourists.
Uber Eats actually just ruined my life a little bit. I lost my job for a little bit and had a little depressive rut so I ordered a lot of Uber eats and I'm coming back from it now never again. I even have $50 a month grocery plan but I wasn't thinkin straight I'm so disappointed in myself rough month
Payday loans are a problem especially when repeated however there is one thing that payday loans use in a commercial that makes a payday loan worth it Some isolated times when many apartments charge exorbitant late fees especially those tied up with property managers.The payay loan insterest is much smaller than the piled up late fees some property managers charge in any event the paycheck is delayed up to a week from the deadline.Payday interest could cost only 20 percent of the late charge if check is delayed a week
1) Sorry, on my vacation, I fly direct. Never stop over. Time is money. We book Amtrak at least 2 months before departure, and it only cost $50 to Boston, Phili or Baltimore, from NYC. We like to go take in a baseball game once in a while, and tour the city. Use points for hotels. 2) never neglect your dental health, delaying checkups can wind up costing more. Also poor dental health can effect your heart.
For frugal folk, or people who live on a low income, taking 'Days Out' instead of a vacation saves money. I use my vintage RV to go to the beach, a State Park, or place of interest. It was inexpensive to buy, and insurance and upkeep is minimal. I live in a beautiful area, so taking a Whale Watching trip, where they include dinner on board is always a special treat, especially when the Senior Center provides coupons for 20% off, on Mother's Day, Mom goes free, so basically buy one get one free. And, children under five are also free. For me, a special day out at least once a month, is something to look forward to and just as enjoyable as spending a fortune on overnight accommodation and travel. Even a drive to the ocean for a picnic on the beach with family or friends, greatly improves my mood, and provides an opportunity to bask in the beauty of nature. I generally budget $20-$30.00 for a day out, but driving or riding one's bike to a local park costs even less.
I hardly ever order takeout for that same exact reason. I always think it's so expensive. It seems like a lot of people order takeout or eat out much more often than I do. I think it's good once in while but not on a daily basis. Preparing your own meal (or having frozen meals available for when you don't have time to cook) is much cheaper not to mention it's usually healthier.
Lol perfect timing. I almost used a delivery app for Starbucks since I am working from home and ran out of coffee and my main tea. Saw the price and ran for the stove. I made my backup, less caffeinated tea. Oh I am suffering. Poor me. Saved $20

I'm a travel agent and no I'm not offended because for the most part you're right. The thing is what we switch to is having specialties so you come to me if you want to go to Disneyland or Disney World because that's my specialty and trust me you can't know it all It's a very very complicated product and it is something that I spend my days learning about every day. The thing to remember with travel agents and I just want to remind people that travel agents should be free for the client. We are paid by the vendors and the only way we get paid again is if you have a great experienceBut some travel agents do is stick to their vendors and their vendors only and even though you could have had a great experience at a cheaper price they don't look at those people because they don't get as much of a kickback. You got to make sure you're working with a really good travel agent that puts you first which is why I like specifically focusing on a particular product because You come to me because my Disney knowledge and you already know you want the product I'm selling. I'm not going to sell you Disney when you want six flags. But it shouldn't cost you anything to use the travel agent though the bookings they find or offer you may not be dealing so make sure you do your homework before you just accepting whatever they give you. Remember though that you get what you paid for and we actually don't really do flights anymore because the airlines don't do commissions for travel agents anymore.
An expensive habit is owning and maintaining a motorcycle. They are cheap at first when second hand, but can cost a fortune after. I have sold my motorcycle today to pay off my dept.

I'm probably off topic but I want to tell you that at one time I had credit card that I was making payments on and the company called me. I asked, didn't I make a payment and the response was yes, but the interest rate went up. Because the interest rate went up, it turns out that I should have made a larger payment. I had stopped using the card in an effort to pay it off. That was just a total rip off in my opinion.

I have heard several people say they wish they took better care of their teeth because replacements are so expensive (in the tens of thousands) and painful. As about saving money, you need to have a supreme goal that you really believe in and strive for, or else you won't save any money. Now I have a supreme goal and I save all of my spare money, i even started to cook. In the past, no matter how many videos I watched and how many scary articles about the financial crisis I have read, I didn't manage to save anything.
So true about smoking and drinking excessively, both I don't do or at least drink in minimal quantities, I don't have to wake up the next morning also with a tragic bank balance!

I think I made the mistake of buying a house too early. My husband and I didn’t have enough of a down payment, but we were sick of paying rent. Looking back, I would’ve waited until we were ready and I would’ve insisted on a property with a rentable space.
Travel Agents can be useful in some situations. Sometimes they have access to inclusive offers. Also if your busy person, they can save you time. However I agree you can do it yourself in most cases. Yes I spent a lot of money on delivery. I finally invested in crockpot, and not only do I save a lot of money, but eat healthier. I am also eating much healthier, and I have leftovers and put into meal containers. I also purchased a rice cooker. I have saved a lot money.

Uber Eats actually just ruined my life a little bit. I lost my job for a little bit and had a little depressive rut so I ordered a lot of Uber eats and I'm coming back from it now never again. I even have $50 a month grocery plan but I wasn't thinkin straight I'm so disappointed in myself rough month

The American finance system seems crazy to me as a European. But, as usual a really good video touching upon some topics that are rarely discussed.
1) Sorry, on my vacation, I fly direct. Never stop over. Time is money.
We book Amtrak at least 2 months before departure, and it only cost $50 to Boston, Phili or Baltimore, from NYC. We like to go take in a baseball game once in a while, and tour the city. Use points for hotels.
2) never neglect your dental health, delaying checkups can wind up costing more. Also poor dental health can effect your heart.
For frugal folk, or people who live on a low income, taking 'Days Out' instead of a vacation saves money. I use my vintage RV to go to the beach, a State Park, or place of interest. It was inexpensive to buy, and insurance and upkeep is minimal. I live in a beautiful area, so taking a Whale Watching trip, where they include dinner on board is always a special treat, especially when the Senior Center provides coupons for 20% off, on Mother's Day, Mom goes free, so basically buy one get one free. And, children under five are also free. For me, a special day out at least once a month, is something to look forward to and just as enjoyable as spending a fortune on overnight accommodation and travel. Even a drive to the ocean for a picnic on the beach with family or friends, greatly improves my mood, and provides an opportunity to bask in the beauty of nature. I generally budget $20-$30.00 for a day out, but driving or riding one's bike to a local park costs even less.

I hardly ever order takeout for that same exact reason. I always think it's so expensive. It seems like a lot of people order takeout or eat out much more often than I do. I think it's good once in while but not on a daily basis. Preparing your own meal (or having frozen meals available for when you don't have time to cook) is much cheaper not to mention it's usually healthier.

I'm a travel agent and no I'm not offended because for the most part you're right. The thing is what we switch to is having specialties so you come to me if you want to go to Disneyland or Disney World because that's my specialty and trust me you can't know it all It's a very very complicated product and it is something that I spend my days learning about every day. The thing to remember with travel agents and I just want to remind people that travel agents should be free for the client. We are paid by the vendors and the only way we get paid again is if you have a great experienceBut some travel agents do is stick to their vendors and their vendors only and even though you could have had a great experience at a cheaper price they don't look at those people because they don't get as much of a kickback. You got to make sure you're working with a really good travel agent that puts you first which is why I like specifically focusing on a particular product because You come to me because my Disney knowledge and you already know you want the product I'm selling. I'm not going to sell you Disney when you want six flags. But it shouldn't cost you anything to use the travel agent though the bookings they find or offer you may not be dealing so make sure you do your homework before you just accepting whatever they give you. Remember though that you get what you paid for and we actually don't really do flights anymore because the airlines don't do commissions for travel agents anymore.
An expensive habit is owning and maintaining a motorcycle. They are cheap at first when second hand, but can cost a fortune after. I have sold my motorcycle today to pay off my dept.

I'm probably off topic but I want to tell you that at one time I had credit card that I was making payments on and the company called me. I asked, didn't I make a payment and the response was yes, but the interest rate went up. Because the interest rate went up, it turns out that I should have made a larger payment. I had stopped using the card in an effort to pay it off. That was just a total rip off in my opinion.
