This hike starts at Hidden Valley Regional Park and makes a big loop along the ridge on the east side of the park. Very steep in some parts, and a lot of elevation gain in a short distance. The reward for your effort is amazing views and relative isolaiton. Not a super crowded trail, probably due to the difficulty!
If the steep trails aren't your cup of tea, there are lots of other trails in this park that aren't nearly as difficult. Lots to expore in this park.

I have always appreciated your eye for finding critters and other things people might miss on the trail. Thanks!

When one is always keeping an eye out for rattlesnakes, it’s easier to spot the other critters :)

I especially liked the wildlife footage.
Reno has exceeded all my expectations in every respect; I retired & moved here in July 2014, I especially like the generally mild change of seasons.
I've just downloaded the track of this hike into my GPS, thank you
You ought to consider the Rim to Reno hike, which begins at the Mt Rose Trailhead & ends at the Thomas Creek Trailhead. A lot of this hike is along the rim @9,000' elevation.
You absolutely, positively need to know the geo coords of the water sources (not included on All Trails) which I can provide to you IF you decide to do either the short or long route. Yes, I've hiked both routes.
I prefer & use HikeArizona which includes hikes in all 48 States, which is FREE instead of All Trails
    Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada

Rim to Reno is on my to-do list. It’s a nice 20-miler that is good for Boy Scouts looking to finish their hiking merit badge :)

@@sierranevadahikes8538 Yes 20 miles for the shorter route. 25 miles for the longer Northern route. 2021 & 2022, there was a lot of smoke from forest fires that obstructed my view will hiking along the rim.
Bronco Creek ( N39º 20.828' W119º 55.918') is the last reliable water source before hiking up to the rim. when beginning your hike from the Mt Rose Trailhead. Camel UP here.
After hiking across the rim, the highest Thomas Creek Water Source is (N39º 23.805' W119º 54.360'). There are other water sources further down along Thomas Creek.
Trail Jct where you decide to take the short or the long route: N39° 23.522' W119° 56.258'

Will you be doing a trip to Loch Leven at some point? I want to do that as my first real overnight backpacking trip and I just want to know what its like, what the best places to camp are, etc. Just curious. Loving the content!

I may not make it there this year, but it’s going on my list to do at some point. I’ve had friends who have gone there in the past. I’ve heard it can get crowded on the weekends so finding campsites can be challenging. It is a good beginner trip. Backpacking to Dardanelles Lake is also a good beginner trip (also crowded) but currently the trail is somewhat flooded at Big Meadow!
