    I need to catch up on the last 2 weeks of videos!!! I'm so excited this week though, Danny. I've been nursing one of my orchids (my first one from last year) and it finally started growing roots (or a flower stem....I'm still waiting to see what they are). I actually have 3 new growth spots (3 bumps) on this orchid and I am excited to see what they turn out to be. One of the bottom leaves has turned yellow and is about to fall off soon too. Keeping up with your videos is paying off and it's going to be so cool to get a blooming flower spike this summer (something to really look forward to). Thanks again for all your help Danny. :)

    Thank you!!! The back half of this clip validates what I was always unsure of - what medium for what orchid type. The environment requirement still puzzles me though, I am in Florida Zone 10a, and I found that the orchids don’t get enough water with dry bark watering once a week. I have since moved to 50 bark 50 sphagnum and 15 perlite and am having much success. Cheers!

I just decided to pull the wooden stick out and it's mouldy with a bit of a bad smell. Should I be worried and repot the orchids again with new medium?

    I just found my mother-in-laws orchid deprived of water because of her health issues. I would love to bring back this orchid to tip top shape. I tested the bark, and it still does not feel mushy. Would you still recommend buying a new medium mix since I'm sure its still using the same mix it was sold in? If so, I live in southern California, with the plant inside with temperatures from 60 to 70 degrees fahrenheit. Which medium would you recommend, and anything else to bring back this orchid?

      Hi, orchids can grow in anything that 1. Can offer water 2. Can offer good air ratios 3. Is not toxic or chemically inadequate for roots, or physically damaging. Imagination is the limit, practicality is a very different story and you need to always think of your level of comfort ☺️ for myself no, I would not consider that mixture, sounds like I'd have to put in a lot of work in my environment, but that's all 😉

    Hi, I have very specific question that I can not find an answer anywhere - my orchids wasnt growing at all in potting ground for like 2 years. I tried water culture and i noticed they are growing new spike and are going to bloom. But some of the leaves and roots are pinkish, meaning thats too much water. Can i repot now in potting mix if the orchid is going to bloom? Or better not? Orchid is still in water only.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi, the pink you see is a pigment called anthocyanin, I don't think it has anything to do with too much water. Here is what anthocyanin is en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthocyanin so maybe it has to do more with light, or low temperatures. Since it is spiking too, maybe the low temps are the cause, as they trigger spikes as well. The problem with keeping orchid roots in water is lack of oxygen, here is what this can lead to hortamericas.com/blog/news/are-you-maintaining-the-proper-oxygen-levels-in-your-hydroponic-production-system/ since I don't know how you go about this setup and offering oxygen, I would always chose potting medium versus this method. Since it's bare rooted it can be potted up easily. Just make sure you don't shock the roots with drought! If they are used to being wet all the time, don't let them dessicate. Water the orchid when it's still a bit damp. Good luck!

    Have a very sad phaeleonopsis orchid I have been trying to get to thrive for a year. I moved and the poor thing has not been happy. The roots on top look great, but there isn’t much growth into the substrate (orchid bark, mixed some perlite in). The two leaves it has are starting to die away but there is another leaf growing from the crown. It’s sat on the banister in my kitchen and gets indirect sunlight. No drafts either.. I use an orchid food, along with the same brand of orchid bark but I’ll have to go make sure what it is. I keep aquariums and was wondering would using tank water to fertilize sometimes hurt my orchid? The tank water ph is 7.2-7.8 depending on what tank, high in nitrates, zero nitrite or ammonia. This is my third failed orchid and I don’t wanna give up :(

    • @cristiaolson7327
      @cristiaolson7327 Před 2 lety

      It depends on your climate and species. For example, I live where humidity is very low and temperatures are high, so I find that orchids in just bark dry very fast and must be watered every 2-3 days, and some do really poorly in this setup. For this reason I started adding moss to all my pots, much like Dani does. Other people who live where humidity is high but temperatures are low would find that moss made their pots wet too long and even pure bark stays moist for a week. Also, some species, like cattleya or vanda, need better air flow to roots than oncidium, phalaenopsis or zygopetalum, so they may want water less often than a moisture lover would in the same media. I can grow laelia in just bark with frequent water where I am, but an oncidium will wither away in the same setup unless I could water it 2x/day, which is really not practical.

      Don't use clay please! Just use bark. Clay will kill them(except for clay bricks and balls(

    ive got a glass vase, and the idea of putting my orchid in the glass vase is always there but not actually done it yet. So i wanted to ask is it okay to put orchid in a glass vase, but putting it i mean the leaves will rest on top of the opening of the glass vase, so the roots will be dangling down, but in terms of the medium, im thinking more of like mixture of moss and pebbles/stones and barks.
    Is it possible to keep it like that?

      Hi, where would be the drainage?

      @@MissOrchidGirl exactly! That's what I was thinking too! Limited air flow as well! Like can we put a layer of pebbles at the bottom so that the roots won't be touching the water?

      @@tommy988lo you must drill holes in the glass vase check youtube on tutorials on where to drill because you will still need alot of airflow through the vase itself

    Do you still grow some orchids in water culture?

      Hi, no I never grew them in that setup, I did a treatment on them and had to keep them without media for a little while about 4 years ago. It wasn't something I wanted to do, I kinda had to..

    hey had a question....could i use repti bark for my phalaenopsis potting mix? and if so should i soak my bark before pottting it again? I’ve also noticed the bark being a bit to small what should I add to give it more air flow?
