    I am so excited. I rescued some Phalaenopsis orchids off a clearance rack at Lowe's. A mini one that after it started growing new roots and leaves I attached it to a pigmy palm in my front yard. It made it through hurricane Ian, though our community. lost more than 250 trees. Last week I noticed 2 flower spikes and today it bloomed gorgeous orchids. The 5 lavender rose outer petals have burgundy veins and cream edge and the center is burgundy rose with a golden center. Two of my other larger rescue orchids each have a developing keiki leafing out. Thank you for all your videos. I have learned how to care for the orchids all from you. I just love growing orchids.

      I'm pulling my hair out. I bought 2 orchards and it plainly says 3 ice cubes once a week. Since I'm new at this i did it. Those places 5 are now flowerless so i cut them back as they showed how
      It also says to spray you plant with fertilizer and put the plastic pot in water for a minute. I just watched your video and started crying. Ugh. Do you have those instructions you gave do i can print and have something to follow.

      What gets me is , they’ll argue till they’re blue in the face that ice on an orchid works. Even after you demonstrate to them what ice does to cells, they’ll still insist that cos their “insert cousins brothers best friends cleaner” says they do it and it works, or the label on their orchid(from a place that produces thousands of baby orchids every week and therefore just “might” have a vested interest in you buying more orchids cos the first one died)says to do it, then they’re gonna do it. And it MIGHT work…….for a while, till the damage gets too severe or the severely stressed plant gets infested with bugs or disease. And then ofc, it’s the bugs, or disease that killed the plant……not the ice *headdesk*

    Thanks for explaining the ICE CUBE watering method, I’ve had my plant going on two weeks now. I chose Sunday to be the watering day, not knowing better, I used ice last Sunday.
    My plant was marked down to $4.50 at HD. Then I found your videos, my plant is outdoors under the patio umbrella, we’re having high humidity and temperatures in the 90’s. The flowers now are spent & I was searching what to do with the stem. Hopefully I can keep this plant alive. I will be checking the roots and medium & if any thing is needed I will order it. 😊

I was doing the ice cube method and had no idea it was actually damaging to the plant. I thought it was weird to use ice cubes because plants don't like cold. As always Danny, your advice is excellent! I can attest to the overblooming mistake! I was so excited when I finally learned enough about orchids from you that I was able to not only kill orchids but rebloom them. I was so pleased with myself that I let my one phalanopsis bloom for over a year straight and not did that poor orchid pay the price. It’s big beautiful leaves started yellowing and dropping and the rest were floppy and slightly dehydrated and grew back smaller. So I did it-chopped the flower spike. The new spike is definitely smaller with less blooms but it is starting to recover. I will NOT make that mistake again! Thank you so much for all you do!! Btw, sent you a super thanks 😊

    Thank you Danny for the info video. I cannot find where the Q&A section is 🤷‍♂ so will try here. I recently got a young Phal orchid Charming Snow '0410'. She has 5 sets of leaves but she is still very small compared to a mature plant. Leaves are like 5-7cm long. To avoid pest and rotting I repotted it because she was planted in a moss and came from the nursery abroad. The problem is that she already has a Spike. I would call it 'desperate' bloom. The root system is not bad but I still don't think she is ready for bloom. I have one similar Phal orchid since last Autumn. Same size, same condition and I also repotted it stright away. It also had the spike and I left it alone. During Autumn and Winter, she did not grow any bigger and the spike grew just like 10cm. It is spring now and time to grow, so last week, I decided to cut the spike. Was that a mistake to sacrifice the first time bloom on a young plant?

    I like to fertilize my orchids using water from my aquariums.
    About food scraps - I tried this once with a money tree when I was like 10. I thought I was clever coming up with a way to compost directly into the plant pot. I didn't see it on social media, it was just my childish idea. It took forever to break down, of course caused mold, and eventually I killed it by overwatering. Beginner mistakes, but I never tried that one again 😅 Now I have about 30 houseplants including 2 phal orchids that are pretty healthy. I've learned from my mistakes.

    Hi Danny! I absolutely love your videos about orchids and I am obsessed about them. I actually am starting a beautiful collection of orchids. I currently have two phalaenopsis, a den phal and a cattleya. I had some concerns in regard to two of them. And I wanted to reach out to you, my orchids guru, for advice.
    First of all, I noticed that my cattleya’s medium is FULL of algae. The plant, however, looks really really healthy. It is very bushy and full of roots, but I saw in one of your videos that algae can be toxic to orchids. At the same time, I am afraid of repotting because of how sensitive are cattleyas roots. I wonder if there is like any product that I can add to kill the algae, like peroxide.
    And lastly, one of my phals, which actually was already in the place we are living in right now, had like a really bad medium, it was not even moss, but like thatch or Cosme thing of the sort. The orchids was in really not good shape, so I repotted it and found that all the roots within the medium were dead. She only had a few arréala roots that I put into the new pine tree bark medium. I water her pretty much everything day because it is still the summer here and the medium dryers pretty fast. However, even when I water her, her leaves remain all flappy. Only her two newest leaves stay hard. Do you have any advice??? Would anyone else like to share some ideas that have worked for you?
    Sincerely,
    Leo

    • @SpikeKing19
      @SpikeKing19 Před rokem

      Hey, I know about the floppy bottom leaves because that's what mine had but they'll stiffen over time after you water them and/or give them a grow light or a little more light than your already giving them.
      I also have a cattleya but mine isn't developing mold but you can look into fungicides to see if they can treat orchids. If your like me and have a lot of different types of plants it's best to have at least 3 different fungicides because not all fungicides treat all ornamentals.
      Hope this helps.

    My orchid blooms 9 months of the year, but i don't cut the flower spikes at all. I just let the orchid do whatever it wants to do. Now i wonder if i should cut the spikes down so it can't bloom from November through August again next year. It has been beautiful this year, and i really love it, but i want to repot it... It started budding in November, which i was not expecting, bloomed before Christmas... And those flowers are still thriving, though I'm beginning to see the first signs that the December bloom is preparing to drop, but it ALSO grew new buds in early spring from the end of one of the spikes, and bloomed a second time in March/April. So the current situation has both some 6-7 month old flowers, and some 2-3 month old flowers.
    It does seem to like the light i give it. It's in a south facing window with an awning, so the room is pretty bright throughout the day, but it only gets a bit of direct sunlight in the early morning and late evening.
    I want to become a better orchid parent and eventually buy more orchids, but i want to make sure i understand everything about the one i have before i tackle multiple plants.

    Hello
    Enjoyed your info on what not to do. I grow my orchids outside. They have been in pots which I have in pot containers (holders) on my fence. They were facing east. I live in Florida on the Atlantic Beach side. I do fertilize them every month or so but basically just leave them alone. I only have to water them if we have gone several weeks without rain. Recently I had to move them to a north facing fence. They no longer have continuous protection from the sun. Now the tree they are under has lost all of it’s leaves. They are putting out flower stems and seem to be ok in this new location. I recently cut off some leaves that were yellow. I appreciated your info on leaving the leaves until the are dried and easily removed. I have probably damaged many orchids by cutting them.
    Question
    Do you have any suggestions for growing orchids out of doors and is it better to leave the blooms on the plant until they are done?

    Beginner orchid lover here! Thanks for all your helpful info! One question: when reporting a phaleonopsis, do I need to place it in a larger clear plastic pot with air holes, or is it okay to plant it directly in a ceramic pot designed for orchids? I've lost a couple, and don't want to lose any more. 🤪😊

      @susanfitzgerald2443 Před rokem +5

      Hi Paige Ward, I don't know if anyone gave you an answer but I put my orchids in the clay orchid pots, they have excellent drainage. I have over 50 orchids and they are all healthy. I have tried to grow a few in water which to my surprise are doing excellent as well. For that you need a jar or container with no holes and put just a small amount of water at the bottom..do not cover all the roots..then I replace the water about one a week and let the orchid stay in the container without water. Then I rinse off the roots and place a small amount of water in the container again. Several that I've done this way seem to be growing quite fast and 2 are blooming. I just thought I would mention that if you wanted to try something new.
      I hope that helped a bit.
      Have a great day!
      🤗

    Hello,
    I have had a phalaenopsis for a year now. It has grown new leaves even during winter. However, a day ago, I noticed that the two old bottom leaves fell off. Today, another old leaf fell off. I have searched it up, but nothing has told me why it's happening since the leaves that have fallen off are rather green. Now, my orchid only has two leaves, which are the newer/baby leaves. I do have some very small spots of root rot, but for the most part, the roots are green. I hope you can help me figure out what is happening to my orchid and what I can do for it to stay healthy?

    Hi Dani, I need help with my orchids. I purchased many orchids on line and none of them have bloomed. Even the really healthy ones have not given any flower spikes. I don't understand why. I am feeding them. It has been three years now. I just don't know what I am doing wrong. I have lost many orchids. Out of 100 orchids of different types, only 2 have given me flower spikes.

    Hi. I just bought my orchid. It’s in a decorative pot with no plastic pot inside. I took it out and it’s on very wet moss. I heard you can’t repot orchids while in bloom. Is it true? What I did I took some of the wet moss out and add some bark into a plastic container. I’m hoping it will survive. It has great roots though, a few soft roots which I’ve taken out. Do you think my orchid will survive? Thanks.

    Orchid is tropical plant that grow stock to the tree trunk. The closest that this urban orchids to be grown is by tree barks or coconut husk. Roots like to be open to air that has moisture. They rely on rain and humidity.Roots are exposed to air . I used to live in a tropical country where we have coconut plantation and a forest beside the plantation by the Pacific Ocean. Different orchids grow wild including the monkeys who love coconuts. Our worker use to take a big bunch of them to our house but I don’t appreciate a lot because I thought they are just common plant. There is one that bloom only for 1 day that emits fragrance to our yard. Unfortunately the forest is now gone because of loggings and the area converted to resorts.
