I'd argue the film is "evil" because it's narcissistic: Nora is the center of this universe and everything revolves around her. That is why Hae Sung is still obsessed with her despite being apart for 24 years (and he just flies out to visit her after breaking up with his girlfriend), and her husband stays home during their meeting: they're side characters playing their roles in her movie. Dare I also mention that Nora's backstory is eerily similar to writer/director Celine Song's? This is why Inception said you never use memories or actual events when dreaming.
Idk I see it more as a story about "what ifs" and reflection on what ones life could have been if they made different decisions or chose a different path.... It's also very much about how the future you see for yourself when you're younger is often so vastly different then how your life ends up, and it's all about being content with a happy life, even if it's not exactly how you pictured it. The scene at the bar between the husband and the ex shows their understanding of that through their mutual respect, and the fact neither could find it in themselves to hate the other one, because they saw what a decent guy they are.... But it's funny to see everyone's POV here lol
Why would they hate each other? They barely had a relationship. This movie is so silly and shallow, I swear. People are using a lot of words to explain something that didn’t even come through in the movie.
She cries when he leaves though, because she has to go back to the bitch ass Nintendo switch husband. Korean Chad is the ideal she wished for, but she has to return to a piece of shit at home. I think part of the reason most people disagree with you is that (besides the weirdos who see nothing wrong with the husband character) a lot of people think that actually adds to the movie. I liked the fact that the husband was a loser and the wife was clearly acting insane and it was kind of a weird cucky story. I think that was fully intentional and doesn't make the movie evil it just makes the movie clearly about weird and flawed characters. I do think some people will interpret the husbands and wifes actions as normal and good but I do not think that is the only interpretation the director intended and everyone I've talked to that liked the movie feels the same way as me. I don't think the movie is a sweet romance, I think it's an awkward cautionary tale and that's why I liked it. I agree with all your statements about the movie I just think that's part of what makes the movie interesting rather than bad.
@ the crux of this film is to allow her to see if this guy, who reminds her of what she left behind, is what she truly wanted for her life. Arthur has enough emotional maturity to say "you know what, you're an immigrant who was pulled from your culture at a young age and who am I to keep you from all that if that's what you truly want" and in reality it wasn't. Did the entire bar conversation go over your head? Where they both admit they've settled into different lives and she would never leave him but they both still talked about it? She didn't even kiss or hug him at the end all 3 knew where they stood.
After finally getting around to watching this one, then rewatching this critique, I don't get the extreme response here. I’d also like to add don’t you think you’re stretching a bit making that John Lennon and the Yoko Ono reference? I grew up listening the Beatles I never once saw that album cover or didn’t leave much of an impression on me because as far as I can tell no one respects Yoko Ono, besides her son. And I can’t think of a single reason anyone would make a reference to Yoko Ono, because they’re only claimed of famous being married to John Lennon.
The fact the a guy would notice 3 other grown men coming to a movie theatre alone and crying while sitting in all corners of the room is not only sad but also just weird. This is not a "good" thing. Based take btw.
Haven't seen it but it sounds like an overindulgent version of the scene in Fargo where Marge meets her old classmate. At least the Coen brothers had the balls to have her be 9 months pregnant and leave it as a questionable decision by an otherwise laudable character. It works as a plot point but as a main story it seems stereotypical and sleazy.
I think the flaw of this interpretation is that at no point the movie condones what the main characters are doing. The scenario at the end with the husband is supposed to be sad/pathetic and his lack of action (even tho most would not approve) is still a real portrayal of how people behave. I think it's frustrating but it doesn't make the movie "evil".
I will just say this outright, the Korean chick cried at the ending because she was saying goodbye to her past self that lived in korea NOT BECAUSE SHE STILL LOVED THAT DUDE. She made the first move on her husband and rejected the dude at the restaurant and looked him up online just for a joke. The dude on other hand was searching her for years like crazy for a proper conclusion to his childhood crush. The director of the fucking movie herself said this. Go check if you have doubt
Lol just because the director said so doesn't mean it has to be interpreted that way in the context of the movie. Once you release art into the world what you meant or in this case what the director meant doesn't mean much anymore. I can get what was meant to be portrayed but i can also see it a different way. Most interpretations are valid, some more than others but valid nonetheless.
