You know if you hold the microphone up to your mouth you'll get a lot better sound. All I hear is traffic.
Jesus, really shows how far MCN have come. Wish they'd do some more budget reviews like this now they've got their shit together.
Now they get paid
Seven years on from this video and I went with the Aprilia. Still looks great in 2017. Still lacks nothing I want in tech. Zero regrets.
fire your sound guy!
Gosh they were so horrible back then. Unreal. Like anyone could have done better with a ham sandwich.
I have a 98 TLS and i found its only real weakness is its framework. It just isn't stiff enough for the fantastic V-twin engine, but it still is a superb bike to ride. I'm very happy with mine!
MCN, these are the videos you need to do more of, one of your best 10/10.
Just goes to show how far video quality has improved on CZcams. I love how you can hear the camera man breathing when he's talking about the VTR.
Best bike here? VTR1000F. Why? That sound is unmatched by the competitors! TL1000s are cool bikes and all, but firestorm is my cup of tea!
Yup I agree I love mine
Old comment but still relevant for people searching for used ones:
Get a true dual exhaust, 2-in-2, without crossover for your Firestorm, or any V-Twin really.
That’s the only way you’ll get that glorious burbling V2 sound...

Honestly the TL thumps harder than the firestorm more fun once the rear shock is swapped out too.
I promise you, you won't regret the RSV or a Tuono. They are just so much fun to ride and have such a presence about them.
Didn't own the TL-S, but I did have a TL-R which I loved.. Very underestimated. But my favourite twin I owned was a 916 Strada, no surprises there!
Iv got a 2000 firestorm.. it’s got 30.000 miles . Ohlins rear suspension. Braided brake lines and a full micron exhaust system it sounds like rolling thunder .... absolutely love the thing
The Aprilia is in a different league to the other bikes. No contest at all, unless you have a strange addiction to petrol stations (where the Honda spends most of it's time) or you want to experience massive tank slappers on an under-damped TL.
An SP1 would compare well with the Aprilia, but you can't buy one for RSV money unless it's scrap.
Amen brother. 👍
A great bike until the fuel pipe comes off on the M25. It’s a tank off as the pump is inside.
Thank you for the review.
This kind of reviews I like and I dare to say we need them more.
I like to watch and read all about the latest bikes, but also I like to know a lot about older bikes because they are affordable. And with which you actually can have the same amount of fun.
Many of us have a lot of fun on these 'youngtimers' and though the latest bikes with the latest technology are superior in handling, acceleration and braking, the youngtimers are still great.
Thanks for review
the vtr is actully fast when slightly moded and if you look after it will be worth about 3,000
I've had both an RSV Mille and a '97 TL1000s, from new. I still have the TLS.
The RSV was a thing of beauty and handles a better than the TL1000S but you had to be in the correct gear all the time, the TLS doesn't give a fig what gear you are in, you just twist and it pullllls.
The TL just has so much character I could never part with it.
The Honda had a drinking problem and the fuel tank size didn't help it.
Still can't understand why they chose Carbs when EFI was already available in some of their other models.
the Aprilia SL Falco (yes I know its a RSV here) has fuel injection, a bulletproof Rotex engine, more modern and high-tech equipment than the japanese for about the same price tag
as weird as it may sound, it's the most "reasonable" choice here
+Nigo besides, the Ducati SSie 900 or 1000 fits somewhere in here as well. They're cheap
firestorms only need slight mods like cam chain tension and the later fuel tank becuase the mpg is could for nice days ride but not for commuting
Tl 1000's so exciting,no contest!
I'd have all three-love the sound of the V Twin 👍
1st gen RSV mille is one of the best bikes, if not the best, in its class by a long shot. I regret selling all 3 I had and now I'm itching for another Tricolore.
I have had mine from 20,000 km to 65,000km. I ride it to work every day in rail and sun. It has never missed a beat. I think you got one that was made on a Friday before a long weekend, when everybody wanted to go home.
Sure it aint frugal, but the acceleration that you get is more than payback for lack of range.
I love mine.
I bought an SV650S which had all standard parts over one that was modified slightly. Turns out the modified one was most likely in much better condition.
My SV had a dead battery, faulty R/R, both Cam Chain Tensioners had been removed at some point and re-fitted incorrectly (cross threaded, fitted at an angle) and the rear brake had a seized inside piston. All things which I couldn't have really tested before purchasing.
A bike having a standard exhaust doesn't mean anything to be honest.
This if they spent money on parts they most likely spent money on upkeep aswell.
My Honda Firestorm is still a thrill to ride after 23 years...there is no big twin I can find that matches its light weight, power and handling today!
Agree with Mr. McMartin!!! I have the '97 before they tuned down the motor's output. She's a bit scary to ride and if you don't ask her nicely, she will bite you. Putting stiffer springs up front and an Ohlins damper makes all the difference. Still love her to bits. Can't sell her. In a stoplight war, she'll eat the others for breakfast. Just respect her and she'll reward you. Not for newbies.
I had a 98 storm in yellow, full renegade system with high level carbon cans, rejetted with k&n,it had also had some head work (not by me)it accelerated faster than the tl andaprilia that my mates had at the time (and I was heaviest) the only trouble was,if you were going banzai, the petrol light would come on after 75 miles 🤦🏻
I went from a sorted Firestorm to an RSV Mille. Aprilia is just fantastic, and have ridden faster bikes which still don't touch it overall. I'm on my second one now.
Firestorm though is possibly even better value for money. Genuine 160mph and really easy to ride.
next season im getting either rsv (leaning towards)
99 R1
or a streetfighter
Ok I have a tl1000s 01 plate and iv upgreaded to Busa brake Busa suspension and exhaust k&n filter and more to it more power as well black box so I would say mine is better. .:)
What's wrong with the TL around corners?
aye it just depends on the previous owner and how handy they are with the spanners.. but if it was mine it would be going to the dealer in standard trim, as i wouldn't be happy accepting a nominal value for any extras i've put on.. for example my r1 has nearly a grands worth of aftermarket parts from a harris carbon end can and jet kit to ohlins shock and a few gilles items etc.. be lucky if the dealer an extra couple of hundred if even that... making it more worthwhile chopping it in standard..
There isn't a bad bike among them. I've had a firestorm and a Mille RSV. I'd sold my RSV Mille 5 months ago for a Daytona 675 and I now regret it, I'm now selling that for another RSV....
There’s a RSV Mille at my job/dealership for 4k with only 2k miles I’m thinking about buying it
Like most TL1000 owners, I still love mine, so what if they try to kill you now and then.. that's half the appeal !!
+DmaxHd Asumeing that all
of the bikes are diferent.
Nothing wrong with the TL, dunno what they’re on about
Ive got a Mille and used to have the VTR and Ive gotta say the Aprilia kicks its arse in every way (apart from comfort) It handles miles better, doesnt bottom its forks out... has good ground clearance, is reliable (the fireyawn popped out oil seals) the RSV is quicker and indeed more economical let alone a bigger tank.. Looks loads better too, people comment on the bike whereas the Honda is a bit bland.. Almost bought a TL a couple of times but saw sense :-) All are a lot of bike for the cash!
Was this recorded beside a waterfall?
If that works then fair enough! I'll stick to my kx though, have a lot more fun off road than i do on lol..
the vtr is the best bike and will be worth fortune in the futer
How so?
no way, aged badly and slow. The only VTR worth getting is the SP1 and SP2.
VTR-F is the more boring sport V-twin ever produced...
sell?
Ah, the Mille is great. It's a big bike but it's great. I have a Mille R and the R bits really make it stand out, especially the OZ wheels. easier to turn than my SV. Go, Mille, go
Sweet Jesus!!! They're driving on the wrong side of the road.
MercedesCherokee they are totally mad
@FreedomForTooting haha xD ! good found m8
Aprilia all the way I owned one last year beautiful bike had a straight through exhaust on it and sounded amazing, but sad to say it was wrote off by my auntie who reversed her micra over it ( -_-) i now own a 2000 Hayabusa which again is a awesome bike but i miss that sound so much.
because although after market don't necessarily mean the bike has been owned by a wheelying weekend warrior type or track day thrasher (although highly likely).
Standard Cans do indicate that the bike has been owned by someone that looks after the bike and is aware that there is no real need for aftermarket junk as most sports bikes cannot be ridden to their limits on normal roads.
Standard cans indicate a desire to keep the bike and engine in its original designed condition and in good order.
Great to see that people are still shooting video on Nokia phones........
Mille all the way home boy's...👍🏻😁
The RSVs, with or without steering dampers, have a lot less tendency to tank slap the rider into oblivion though };-)) But the TLs certainly had a really strong engine, as standard, AND they can be bored out considerably more than the Rotax 990s.
Used to do some track stuff with a mate on his TL1000, me on a 2000 model Mille, and the Mille definitely has the edge on braking, entry, mid corner and exit, just from weight difference, but the TL was gaining ground by the end of the straights
Give your bike a chance. I've got a a KLX 250 and it's a lot of fun on the road and can go places that a sport bike can't
sweet TL100s is gr8
Exactly!!!
Actually, truth be told, Noriyuki didn't like the frame of the Aprilias, neither the SBK nor the MotoGP version "cube", as he reckoned the frames were just that bit too rigid and lacking any flex.
That may be so, however from what the forums suggest and through my own personal experience I would never own one again. I agree with what you say about the acceleration, if you're out on a long ride it's just a complete pain filling up all the time whilst your mates are doing 200 miles a tank. I wasn't bothered about fuel consumption, just the constant visits to the pump lol. Well good luck with yours, it seems to be treating you well.. There was one aspect I was fond of, noise, mine gave lots.
Two Sports tourers....and one sports bike.
Dude getting a sound engineer wouldn't hurt idd.
Or they can indicate that they have been owned by someone who just wanted it to commute on and never really did any maintenance themselves apart from the standard service intervals. And any maintenance they did do may be suspect.
The bikes I do see with aftermarket parts tend to look in much better condition than those with all standard parts. This could also be down to people who have a real interest in bikes will probably adapt or fit aftermarket parts to make the bike more how they want it.
I've owned all three and several of the 916 model.
The Aprilia was actually the most reliable. My Honda shat its cam chain and spat me off, The TL was reliable but the finnish was very poor.
Now,go make a video where we can hear what you say...
Crap sound quality couldn't understand what he's on about half the time could have been better thought out
People moaning about video quality and sound lol this was made 7 years ago!
Yes. Decent microphones were not available in 2009......
stevey2020 Exactly!
common sense tells you not to film next to a main road especially when its wet, of all the places to commence filming , why not go to a little car park near a reservoir or something ???
They are known for being really sketchy on corners.
why you've taken tl1000s instead of tl1000r ? Aprilla is in the sportsbike grup like tl1000r but S version is in tourer gruop, so comparing that bikes is pointless.
A used Mille has very little in common with whatever bike Haga has used over the course of his career, and guys like him are already in the top 1% when it comes to riding ability.
Back then Chad had hair
How do you expect anyone to take you seriously dressed like that! LOL! I mean c'mon dude, Daaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmmmm!
yeah i agree about the blatant brand patriotism that is shown by the journalists.. especially with the triumph for example in the naked supersports and it and the cbr600 in the supersports classes.. blade in the superbikes... im glad that they came to the conclusion that the rsvr was the best bike there however as it is definately the better bike of the lot, although you can tell they really wanted it to be the suzi lol
lucky you didn't pop a fork seal on the first wheelie, shocking bad.
the lad with the white leather has a nice riding style for the wet though, and the lads in the textiles look like horrendous pilots in the wet
sound in the beginning was awful...
please make sure you USE the mic !
level down the camera mic next time while you use the hand mic...
aye I agree about their videos although some of their recent vids have been better. I been reading MCN for years and trouble is 1. they appear to be getting more and more sponsored (biased) and 2. their reviews of bikes are normally the opinions of the 2 posers neevsey and childs both of whom you can tell are fanboys of certain makes and find it difficult to be fair.
you have a certain point on the aftermarket gear but on the whole most peeps will just flog the bike as is privately or trade
Aprilia. No comparison.
Badly drawn boy.
So in the first part of the vid, Adam is dressed casual for the cold wet winter climate in the UK and the second part is dressed in decent motorcycle Kit so don't quite get it - ah you across the pond that explains it - sorry a hoody top, 3/4 length shorts and vans are not considered good motorcycle gear in the UK - even in the summer :)
Why film next to a wet main road??
no SV650? shocking
Aprilia...
...but the RS250!
Fire both of them.
Вместо RSV mille надо было сравнивать с Falco
Get a new mike or get further away from the traffic . . . or add subtitles! Can't hear it - gave up at 1:43.
Why look for standard exhausts? Most bikes will have an Aftermarket exhaust, and if not you will probably end up fitting one yourself anyway.
are you kidding me with the sound or what?
charlie brooker ftw
you forgot the GPZ 500S
Blaz Cigale the gpz is really good commuter
I wish my dad saw this when he bought a motorcycle for me : / i got a street legal trail bike but im really looking for a sport bike : /
Lol @ the knee out but bike no lean
Las 2 japonesas son las mejores
The microphone is a fake.
Sadly the sound is crap guys
the hat makes you look like a smurf
Dude i never ride without full leathers! Secondly bro i actually live in the UK! And as for the dude in this vid, if i saw him in the steet i might mistake the guy for a tramp! LOL! He needs a fashion councillor Asap!
I like your show, but you guys desperately need a boom mic. Presenter at the start is struggling to overcome traffic noise.
Throw away the rotary damper with an 07 R1 rear unit. Done.
I'll pass, I like reliability thanks
1500£ for a firestorm ? -_-
In denmark the absolute cheapest Firestorm I can find is a 97´ that costs 7566£
Lovely vehicle-taxes -_-
or you could just buy an RSV instead and get something that's sorted out of the box, and sounds better with the 60 degree twin
Please don't delete your "getting rid of chicken strips" video as it's awesomely inspiring for us lesser bikers };O))
poor front wheel at 03:25
May I suggest you have a look for, and at, a video with the following title;
Suzuka, Aprilia RSV Mille lap @ 2 minutes 32.48
It's in my uploaded videos section. }:O))
What about the fact that the vtr takes about 7 litres of gas on 100km?? AND
If you like the suzuki's engine, just go for another bike: SV1000 S. Also quite cheap as it is not produced any more!
Only thing wrong with the TLS is the back suspension and the clutch. The engine is awesome, but they all have that weird "tik" sound in it. Why the fuck did Suzuki make a rotary demper and a shockdemper in the rear... And WHY did the put that stupid rotary demper next to the exhaustbend of the second cillinder, thats getting HOT! making the oil thin and you can adjust that thing cold then it rides fine but when the oil inside heats up its just a piece of unnecessary crap and weight to your bike!
sure, get the TL if you want to die on teh next corner, or if you only ride in straight lines. Get the Aprilia if you like being bent over a barrel and raped every time you need to get it serviced, or need a part.
If you want hassle free, reliable, comfortable, cheap FUN, then get the Honda. It has a decent torque curve and accelerates out of the blocks as quick as any - 3.1 seconds to 100km./hr, and hits 100km/hr in first. Seriously, who needs more than that. It also has decent handling.
MonkeyHerder3
VTR-F is the most boring V-Twin 1000 ever... This is a dead donkey. This is a Honda...
The S is a what lol ? Try ride a 97 version and tell me! lol
Time to lose the pony-tail Chad, the 80's was a looong time ago now!!
They should stop using a budget mic.
