Of note, for HM mules, prioritizing moves like Cut and Rock Smash is important because of their low base power. I find that Strength is a decent normal type move due to it's fairly decent base power. There's definitely better normal type moves out there, but it will do.

In the early game, rock smash can be a pretty decent move. In Gen 4, for example. Teach it to a geodude and Mars' infamous Purugly won't give you any trouble. Geodude resists Purugly's stab and can also tank pursuit with his high defense. Rock smash hits super effective and can lower the defense.

I mean the term slave does usually refer to people of color usually so it's not the best term to be using. I actually like the term HM Mule. I've never heard it before this video and I'm gonna use it more now. Mule at least emphasizes that it's carrying the burden as it's job and because it's a resilient Pokemon with high endurance. Not because it's been caught and forced to do what we tell it.

Cut is useful for games without Return or Secret Power on Pokemon that can't learn Strength.

After watching and doing my own Gen I speedruns I'd say that the best mule is Paras or Oddish.
    Their only purpose is Cut.
Paras can be obtained in Rock Tunnel and if you don't encounter one you get an Oddish. Cut is the most important since you need it to get to Surge and you need it early game. Strength is technically only needed for Victory Road, but Strength is also a pretty decent move similar to Fly and Surf, but even then you can get a Lapras for free that can learn Strength (and Surf) if you really need an additional mule.

@@Hmmm777 It wasn't, I used multiple pokemon for HMs, Diamond was my first game and, not knowing how stats worked and put Surf AND Waterfall on My Started Empoleon and didn't put them on Bibarel, it only ever had cut and I'd long since replaced it by the time I beat Cynthia.

One other thing on Linoone is that it has the ability pickup, so you periodically get items to go along with the hm slots it absorbs

Fun fact about the foggy route in sinnoh! It’s counted as a weather status. Fog, lowers everyone’s accuracy a bit. I figured out that if you introduce a separate weather effect like sandstorm, it clears the fog in battle.
This is what I did to survive the route on my ground-only run, where I had no access to fly or defog until I beat the game and could get a Gligar with my gba cartridge slot.

i think they should buff some of the hm moves too make them more usable on regular pokemon like cut could be a bug type move with 65 bp; 100 accuracy & rock smash could have it's power boosted to base 60 so it could be pretty useful on fighting types with technician & strength could have it's power boosted to 90 making it slightly more powerful than body slam but without the paralysis chance making it atleast a little more relevant
