- if your UPS has a good battery, but the device is still showing no battery installed, this video might help.
The Omron relays discussed in this video are model # G2R-14-T155. Their customer support was very helpful in responses to me. In short, the T155 indicates a temperature threshold of 155C. This part is not readily available in the US market, and would require some vendor/company to order them for resale here. It was suggested to consider the G2R-14-T130 (with a lower insulation class rating of 130C) as a possible replacement part.
Should I ever need to replace one of these relays, I will go this route and post a follow-up video. However, at $6-7 each, if more than one or two are faulty in your UPS, it may be cheaper to replace the whole unit with good used one.
Thanks to you I broke off plastic front plate just like you did. THE RIGHT WAY TO REMOVE IT: pry up the bottom part of the plate and then just shift the whole plate towards the buttons side. No need to pry any clips that are marked wite on this video -- you'll break them otherwise. Please upvote to warn anyone who sees this video.

thank you so much! my new battery only had a connection problem. I pinched in the rounded tabs inside the female terminals and it solved my problems. the ups would not turn on. but removing the battery the ups turned on. I knew that the battery had a bad connection.

Same unit exact same failure mode on battery pack and chassis power plug. I used jb weld. Frustrating to have to fix which is really poor apc component quality.

Hi, I have a BR1500G. It opens slightly differently, but this video helped me get it open. For anyone interested: the three front screws (see video) are under the *entire* front assembly, so you don't need to remove the front face plate. There are (6) super duty plastic clips holding it on. You have to use *a lot* of force to get it open. I used plastic pry tools, but I may just try ripping it off in the future. Be wary, there is a connector for the LCD display...don't go ripping that off! Thanks!
I dont know how well you know your way around the inside of these but I have the same unit..the problem is mine charges when off but only runs on battery when turned on. I've tried using the skills I have to troubleshoot the board but I don't have the right equipment to diagnose the issue. But it won't detect the that it's plugged in when on. If you know how to fix any hell would be appreciated

Thanks for posting this. I have the BR1500G, but it looks to be the same type of case. Your video gives me a good idea of how to disassemble mine.
I have the 1500va, however I do not have any batteries and when I turn it on there's a constant beep and the Display panel does not turn on. Do you know if this might be because there are no batteries connected? I looked inside and I cannot see any obvious damage in any component or PCB
I believe the display should still function if batteries are not installed.
Used a little bit of acetone to try to clean the strain relief (chloroprene) yellow gunk off of the corner of the PCB on my UPS. Wouldn't budge at all!
Should I toss the UPS? It still works fine after powering it back on without any issues.

@@airhogglider Ah I had to turn the volume wayyy up to hear that. I recommend trying an automotive non-conducting stethoscope to pinpoint exactly which component is making that noise. I cannot tell if it is an electric arc or a flapping relay, but if you can ID the faulty component it is probably worth replacing if you are able.

Now that I got the thing apart and can see the various clips, it appears that you should be able to remove the smoke-tinted cover from the front by prying up at the bottom and then sliding the tinted cover upwards. The clips seem to be seated in channels that will release when the cover slides upwards a bit.
Backups Pro 1500 also use 6 plastic clips. You don't need to remove the transparent part of the front plate in order to remove it. Beneath the front plate are three screws you need to remove to get into the unit.
This helped, I was suffering the dreaded swollen battery stuck in unit issue, this is always a pain for any of the APC UPS I’ve had or have to fix. You really shouldn’t have to take apart the whole units to get a stuck battery out
there is no stupid cooling fan in this unit too, i have an BR1500G the cooler inside this unit would sound like mini Diesel Genset and i can never sleep peacefully without turning the unit off any ideas t fix them ?
raga N these models are not designed to be used in a bedroom! These are closer to commercial or server class units designed for an office environment.
actually i bought the BR1000G model after it had a fan failure,i got a free replacement with 1500G as there was no stock with the seller but still the QC checks on these items are worst,the ups would self discharge itself with no load connected and will show remaining time "0" . am thinking of dismantling the whole unit and take off the fan completely am using it for only CCTV DVR with 5 cameras and a router the total load is only about 20-25 watts so i guess the fan is not required in terms of discharging right?
7:44 I have APC 1500VA ones with F06 warning. I have been to tried disassembly it for replace the relay but after remove front plastic cover. I didn't see any screw as see in this video, pls anyone's help me out.
Any thoughts on fixing "F02' error?
I have never encountered it, but if I did and the unit was out of warranty, I would try replacing the battery first, then open it up to look for any obviously damaged or failed components.

I am still having problems with the clips that retain the front cover. What direction should I pry to release them. The ones on the bottom are particularly difficult to reach, unless the rectangular cutout is the place to pry.

Yes the front cover is tricky. As you noticed around 6:02 in this video, I broke 3 of the clips that hold mine on. Start on the bottom with a plastic pry bar at the rectangular cutout, then slowly work it up the sides of the panel. I also marked on my panel in the video where the rest of the clips are so you might be able to apply the leverage more accurately. Keep applying more fore until the clips pop loose, hopefully unbroken!
With the unit resting on the back (side from which the cord exits), is the prying motion initiated by using the case as the fulcrum of the lever, the small arm of the lever under the cover, and the long arm of the lever pressed downward to exert upward force on the cover?
d davus yes, you're essentially prying the cover out at a vector perpendicular to the body of the UPS.

There is another way to remove the front trim plate of the br1500/br1000. It was in Tom's hardware. They recommend prying the bottom of the trim plate from the catches and then sliding the trim toward the top of the unit. This allegedly disengages the other catches. Does that seem correct?

I just put bulb grease on the terminals and reinstalled the battery, problem fixed.
Great idea--glad that worked for you. In my case for this video, there was nothing for the bulb/dielectric grease to assist in connecting to as the internal connector had been pushed out of its housing.

Hello I have the opposite problem with mine... it got stocked on battery and the menu button doesn't do anything and it doesn't work with the wall outlet and I checked the fuse and it fine even I opened the back part of th eunit to make sure the fuse is allowing continuity and yes it is fine but the UPS doesn't react to the external energy and I have tried the unit on all outlets at home and the same problem.. do you know what may be happening with my unit?
Microcontroller IC is dead, you'll have a hard time finding a replacement IC.

I just bought my first UPS, an APC 1500, and the battery does not seem to be charging, the computer software says it is charging but has been at under 20 % for a few days. I turned off the UPS overnight and the battery did not charge at all, I also left it on over night and there was no additional charge. I understand it takes 16 hours to fully charge this kind of lead acid battery, but I expected much more of a charge over 8-10 hours.
Am I looking at a bad battery? I did the software self test and it says it passed just fine. Thanks!
Will the battery power anything through the UPS without AC power? Try just a phone charge or something. If so at all, even just a minute, I would bet the battery is bad. Return for exchange. If it won't power anything at all with a ~20% charge, then the unit itself may be bad. Either way, that's not behavior a new UPS should have. Check connections and let us know how it goes.
@@WillHennegan I plugged in a 5 volt 1 amp charger into the UPS with no AC power and it did give a charge to my phone, a 600-700 mA draw from my phone. the battery in the UPS is down two 12 percent but still reported as charging, this is from the software from APC. Thanks for your help. I understand that some lead acid battery's have a cycle in which they deplete themselves and then recharge to maintain a healthy half life. I do not know if this is the case or not.

Hey there! Late comment but I was wondering where you purchased the individual cells? I was hoping i might be able to get them cheaper from a wholesaler or random Chinese import from eBay instead of buying the whole battery combo from APC, saves a bit of money and let's me have some fun taking it all apart (which, also, do you know where you found info on taking it apart)
Hi, I learned how to take this apart the hard way (I broke the front cover as other commenters pointed out). The cells in this battery pack are called WP7.2 12. You can find generics of these for sale on most online retailers. A 2-pack (needed for this unit) starts around $35 and up. You can get a pre-assembled battery for this BR1000G for $15 more and that may be worth the price for some. However, that robs those of us that enjoy the DIY aspect of most of the fun.

My br1500 having issue with error F06 , which related with internal relays, any idea to fix it
If out of warranty, you could try to replace the relays yourself. Beyond that, I am not sure what to suggest. Good luck!

Hi @Fallon Cohen, this goes a bit beyond my expertise. If one of mine was behaving that way, I would still disassemble it to verify good connection contacts, and to also look for any other signs of component failure. If nothing is glaringly obvious, I would scrap the unit, or maybe keep it for spare parts. Good luck.
@Fallon Cohen Sure. Use a multimeter to test the voltage of the battery before installation, then install the battery and see if the leads coming from the connector going to the circuit board give you the same reading.

If it just a matter of pushing the connector back to where it needs to be and applying glue is it necessary to disconnect every wire that is connected to the boards?
Hi budrig, if the only thing you need to repair is the battery connector, you do not need to disconnect every wire or remove any components beyond the side panel. I only went that far to help & show others who might have to replace relays or other components and examine everything else for myself.
Make sure the unit is unplugged and do test how well the battery connects before completely re-assembling.

did you calibrate the ups after change the battery ? my ups can't charge after replace the battery.
I did not. You could try calibrating it, but I don't think that would help if it isn't charging at all.

I wish my repair was as easy. On my APC Back-UPS XS 1000 the status button (button to the right of the on/off button) facing the unit no longer responds and does nothing. I need to repair the button. On another UPS unit I have, the batteries will not charge.....(they are brand new batteries that are tested and known good). The circuitry on the board is faulty and no charging voltage is going to the batteries. I'm in the middle of trouble shooting both these issues. I sure wish I'd get issues like this occasionally.

I have this model and it gave an error the other day it was either F06 or F09 I can not remember which, would just replacing the battery fix those?
Hmm I don't think replacing the battery would fix your problem. Check page 5 of the manual : excessups.com/manuals/apc-backups-pro-1000-br1000g-manual.pdf Both of those codes indicate some sort of internal fault, like a relay or some other failed component.

Great video. So mine has a problem where the voltage sense circuitry varies widely. I can watch it go from 122V down to 107V up to 114V down to 102V etc. This causes it to switch to battery mode when it's not necessary (like 10 times per day at the lowest voltage tolerance level). I have an identical unit plugged into the same outlet and it's rock steady at 121V. I know it's not practical to try and debug this further, but I hate throwing out things like this. Any idea where to start in debugging the voltage sense circuitry?
Removed my comment.... read yours too fast and somehow missed the part about you having a second unit that displayed steady voltage! I had an issue with a continuous brownout for months in my apartment after damage from Hurricane Sandy.
Turns out the problem was with the electrolytics. I replaced them and it’s running strong.

hi, i have the same unit but BR-1500VA the items is 3yrs old and out of warranty, today every thing was fine until the AVR trim was continuously on after sometime the ups got itself switched off. now when i press the middle button to turn on there's a Beep but the unit wont turn on,theres no display also coming,i have checked input volts and battery volts and resettable fuse every thing is as it should be. is there anything i can do to start the unit.i have good skill at electronics,thank you for video BTW.
Does your computer detect the UPS? Can you see the unit's status in the Powerchute software? Is the equipment plugged into it still running? If the UPS is unplugged from the wall, does the equipment still run on battery for any amount of time? If the display is not working, there is likely a failed component inside that needs to be repaired or replaced. I would also suggest determining why AVR trim was on for so long, and consider modifying your power parameters to be more tolerant if possible.
@@WillHennegan yes i found the cause, an barrier diode with wv4-21 code got burnt since i don't have a replacement SOT-23 package am going to try putting two normal 1n4007 in BAt54s config and try kick starting the unit and for some reason even the fan controller stopped working but i bypassed its tachometer signal detector using a 555 timer ic but the fan 3 pins are also not putting 24v when on mains where battery gets charged and not sure if there is a relay for fan switching or a switching diode am yet to find after starting this unit, any ideas? Thank you.

To ok thank you friend for responding fast but changing the two batteries will cause the fault as the two batteries together measures 12.23 and separate measures 6 volts each if you change the two batteries will remove the fault
It sounds like your batteries may be faulty. I think the PRO-1300 battery pack should measure 24-25 volts (as two 12-volt batteries wired in series).
Can we place order for the battery connector. the one you showed at 11:36 is kind of damaged due to wrong placement of battery pushed in to.

Can a UPS like this be used to run a garage door motor ?
Yes.
Keep in mind these can get quite heavy, so mount it securely!
Update: Don't know why I didn't mention this earlier. This scenario greatly depends on the power demands of the garage door motor. A 1HP motor is roughly 750 watts, so make sure whatever model UPS you're using can sustain such a power draw for the right amount of time to open/close.

Hi@@archangel7052, batteries *should* at least last the warranty period, which is usually 3 years for APC. Mine lasted 4 or 5 years. I would not consider myself an expert, but I believe these UPS units act like a AVR for their rated load, with the added bonus of backup power. I cannot really answer your question without more info about the power fluctuations you're having, or the equipment/load you need to support, but I hope this helps. If your power fluctuations are bad enough to where a UPS would be active a few times a day, you need to have your power company fix your service. We actually had that issue in our neighborhood a few months ago and they switched out a faulty transformer within a day.

I am not sure. The 1500 model has a fan, but not this 1000 model. I have not had a 1500 to work on yet.
@@WillHennegan yeah the 1500 has a tornado fan. So I replaced it.
I was trying to see if this also have fan so that I can replace it too.
Very poor lighting. It would have been a lot better if the backdrop had been a gray or some other neutral color so the camera wouldn't have closed down the lens to compensate for the bright white working surface. Also, the video should definitely have explained HOW to discharge the capacitors, since they are so dangerous.

This video was great. Im debating on buying new batteries for my xs 1000. I found the unit on offerup for $10 but it gives me an F01 error. Is it worth it to buy a replacement battery or is the unit no good?
AJH81 I believe F01 is due to overloading the battery. I would try braindeading the unit and putting in a new battery with no load on the unit and see if the error persists. If it's still there, you may have a faulty unit that needs to be repaired or replaced.

Mr. Hennegan, Very nice and informative video. I too have this unit. Front panel says back ups pro 1000 (BR1000G an Indian varient probably) and mine give error code 08 fan issue and i tried opening it and was amused when i find no screws beneath the plastic face. I starting reading all the comments just to find that there is no fan inside while i thought if this error is there so it must be there and in the video it wasnt visible. I assume it was placed somewhere and not visible in the video. How to rectify this F08 error. My UPS runs for few minutes and this error flashes and ups shuts down abruptly. Please help. regard

I have seen APC forum and it mentions of a fan inside as users commented that fan keeps running etc etc. I feel that fan is there as fan noise comes out.

The problem is not the light. It's the fact that all the black components are on a white background. The camera adjust to average light levels. When the cam gets in close, everything is great. When the white towel is in the shot, the inside of the UPS goes all dark.
Solution: use a dark background.

Hey! Can you tell me if there is a fan inside this model? I have the similar model called Back-UPS Pro 1500 and in my unit the fan is always running, but eventually the fan turns off for some minutes and then switch to on again (and it's kind of noise).
Do you know what can be the problem? Is there a easy way to fix it?
I can feel with my hand in the top part of the unit some air ventilation (blowing some air up). I'm just pissed off because the fan almost never turns off (I think this is not normal, it should run only for a brief moment).
And when I turn the unit on, like you did at 13:25, mine do a LOUD noise. I don't know why.

The Pro 1500 is NOT designed to be used in a bedroom or office setting where people are working all day.
Idk if 25 volts is gonna kill someone lol I work with 48v on my bike and got zapped b4. Unless some dumbass disassembles it while it's plugged into the wall or something 😂
Wrong open upps. Bad video. Beacuse I see your video and I try. But not open proper my APC ups dameged all plastic cut so I am not happy. Very very bad video. So 😭
